Disagree. Plot drives other elements, like character development. I can't really enjoy a movie, book, or anything else without a good plot.

it should be the other way around. characters should drive the plot.

what are some good movies that focus primarily on plot

Do you live in a world where Black Panther never came out and became a cultural phenomenon/sources of inspiration for Black people

i'm talking about not milking franchises when it comes to diversifying stories, dude. not what the race or gender of the filmmaker is.

disney can just as easily make a black adventure tentpole movie that... isn't another episode of the marvel tv show. or they can give a woman the reigns to her own standalone movie instead of clinging onto star wars and hoping it turns into a new trilogy or whatever.

The rogue squadron movie is directed by Patty Jenkins will most likely be female oriented. For someone that seems to be far left you seem to be fake about it and only give a fuck about seeing yourself represented and the things you want. You you you is all we ever hear you bitching about. Grow the fuck up and accept the things you enjoy and want most are never going to be in mainstream demand. The world does not revolve around you, no matter how many Internet groups you make to burrow into your own limited tunnel vision safe space

sure women and poc and lgbtq ppl deserve every opportunity to make the same bad to mediocre hollywood movies that straight white men make. i don't really see what this has to do with disney being uninterested in diversifying the kinds of stories they tell as far as, you know, not milking a franchise(s). they're disney. if the little magical kingdom graphic plays before the movie then asses will be in the seats. they can do whatever they want and that means they're the ones with tunnel vision, not me.

You can turn a profit on a small movie. Although I suppose a company would rather have a $400m profit than a $100m one.

Dug from Up gets a show.. Lightning and Mater from Cars get a show... Buzzy Lightyear origin story... Enchanted, Turner and Hooch, Mighty Ducks, Sister Act, Cheaper by the Dozen, Ice Age, Night at the Museum, Lion King, Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Chip and Dale, Hocus Pocus... all getting sequels, spinoffs, or remakes of some kind. Embarrassing.

Plus like ten new Star Wars shows/movies and Marvel shows/movies. The announcement video that Patty Jenkins made for her movie was one of the most shameless, cynical things I've ever seen.

What happened to Touchstone? Or, like, people not wanting nostalgic bullshit and wanting to find something new to enjoy? I see people my age or older getting excited about all this stuff. What is wrong with people?

First of all, I choose to watch most of those movies. And some of them end up being decent or good. Shithouse for example is one of the best movies I've seen this year. Same goes for black bear.

Steven Spielberg himself made the distinction between movie and film, but it wouldn't surprise me if your narcissism believes you to be above Spielberg. Even so, that grading scale is not my choice but I see how it's helpful to the average reader. People should always just read the review anyway

You do make a point that critics should always be going back into the vault and watching classics to hone their knowledge and understanding of the craft. But here's the thing. I don't log that stuff on my letterboxd. I only log the stuff I'm watching for review. As for clicks, for what it's worth Stardust actually made me the most money last month. Still not sure how it went viral but yeah

Google isn't bringing up anything about Spielberg noting a difference between the two. Perhaps you could elucidate.

Why don't you log them? Or review them for the site? What have you seen/enjoyed this year?

Absolutely yes.

the publicist didnt even reach out to him (it's mentioned in his review he had to request a screener link himself). it has ten RT reviews after two months. two are from major outlets and the others are indie blogs. no one cares about this movie in the slightest. meanwhile film twitter is a large body of people who would definitely be more inclined to click on his review tweet of, i don't know, drive a crooked road, instead of that. like cmon. everyone knows what to expect from a DTV american pie spinoff but... what do you expect from a noir starring mickey rooney? i have no idea. plus it's probably a better movie, which doesn't hurt.

you don't come off as much of a cinephile given that you watch like 70% VOD poopoo for your website. you also use a movie *and* a film rating, which makes no sense.

tbh you could stand to watch and review something outside of the modern purview. it'd probably help your perspective as a critic and also you'd get to watch better movies. i mean is the american pie sequel really gonna get *that many* more clicks than a review of, i dunno, an american in paris or il posto or any other number canonical or under the radar older movies.

Those people might and likely do watch other stuff...but it's all spread about and doesn't hit the top ten.

What do you think should be watched instead?

It'd be cool if there were like 2 or 3 grownup movies instead of lowest common denominator/VOD stuff. Doesn't even necessarily have to be good, just give the impression that an effort is being made.

If you just watch/read/do whatever is most advertised to you then I don't think you are actually drawn to it, you're just more or less being peer pressured into it.

Plus, seeking out things that are not popular and finding genuine enjoyment out of them and rejecting milquetoast popular stuff is a verifiable cool personality trait.
