Gonna have to think through this so this post will be sort of meandering as I type my thoughts out. Bloodborne is in there, for sure. RDR2 is probably in the mix. That Spider-Man game was really solid. So was Ghost of Tsushima. Fuck it, I'm going to list games that would make the cut then try to boil it down. I really like A Plague Tale: Innocence. TLoU2 Control What Remains of Edith Finch The Talos Principle The Witness Concrete Genie Knights and Bikes Hollow Knight Breath of the Wild Super Mario Odyssey God of War Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice The Last Guardian Darkest Dungeon Salt & Sanctuary dude I could keep going but I'm probably watering this list down... I'm probably forgetting some. I think the ones with stories that really struck a chord with me were (in no particular order) The Last Guardian RDR2 TLoU2 Hellblade God of War Knights and Bikes The Talos Principle What Remains of Edith Finch Bloodborne (really got into the lore in that game) Ghost of Tsushima and A Plague Tale of those, I'd say Bloodborne What Remains of Edith Finch Hellblade Those three are top three for me. | Far-Queue 11/10/20 6:10:04 AM #3 | I will say that while I liked playing through the story in TLoU2, it's almost oppressively bleak. I felt drained emotionally by the end. Death Stranding took me 3 starts to really get into it. I'm not going to fault anyone who struggled with the game's early portions and wrote it off as bad. It's the definition of bad game design to put your worst offerings up front. First impressions and all. But I kept hearing the game gets better when you unlock certain tools and equipment, so I gave it another go and the game is really good. Games like Dark Souls are the exception, as there's no options for difficulty.
