Steampunk seems like an alternate technology path where fluidics can achieve everything we would use electronics for.

I think the simplest explanation is that she saw a similar looking phone and concluded it was hers.
Otherwise, what is there to gain?

She couldn't locate her phone so she thought, what? To accuse the closest black person? To accuse the closest male? Maybe they have different faiths and she accused the closest Episcopalian. Why is racism the cause of her accusation and not some other prejudice?

As far as how the situation developed I see the point each made. It sounds like the way the manager handled it contributed to the escalation. The father and son should not have been treated that way as guests and if the manager had been better at approaching the situation the resolution would have been quite simple.

Since Bernard now knows the reader must deduce that Bernard was told either 15, 16, or 17.

Albert deduces the above and realizes Bernard was told either 15, 16, or 17. Albert knows the month. If Albert was told August then he still would not know whether Bernard was told 15 or 17. If Albert were told July then he knows Bernard must have been told 16.

Since Albert now knows the reader must deduce Albert was told July.

A lot of mental health issues stem from poor physical health.

Mental health issues tend to lead to not looking after one's self. It becomes a feedback loop. Each definitely has it's own significance. Which one is more important to address at a given time can differ by situation.

If both are good and it comes down to a choice of which to maintain then mental is more crucial to being able to restore balance later on.
