Like, think of awesome grandparents you've met, then imagine a room full of people like that who are all just tickled to see you. It's a fun time.

Idk when I just press a button at any moment to stop time forever and then scroll around my abilities choosing which one I want to use, debating if using an item is better, etc. and I can do that forever even against bosses it does feel pretty turn-based

But then if it's a little pod of 3 enemies that are wimps I can just run up and slash around and they'll die easily

Win win

Basic idea of trick-taking games:

Deal out the cards so everyone has the same amount

Someone "leads" a.k.a. plays the first card by simply laying it face up on the table

General rule is, going around the table in order every player must lay down a card of the same suit as the card that was led

If a player is out of cards of that suit, they may "throw off" a.k.a. play any card they want from their hand

Once all players have put down a card, whoever played the highest card that matched the original suit "wins the trick". Generally this player then gets to lead the next trick with any card they want

At the end you count up how many tricks you won and there's points etc.

Also, some games have a trump suit, meaning any card of that suit beats any card that is not that suit and only loses to a higher trump

Whether or not one may play trump when they're not yet out of the suit that was led can differ, but generally not allowed

I prefer hearts.

I like the individual scoring in hearts. And shooting the moon is so much fun...weighing the options of "do I remove all doubt that I'm going for it now, or do I wait?" is very thrilling.

Reason I like bridge better is because winning at hearts doesn't feel all that satisfying. Ironically the individuality of it makes it less appealing to me in a sense of there's more ways for my success to just be the direct result of someone else not paying attention or messing up. Of course, if I was playing with a bunch of sharks that could change.

Though, even then, randomness is a way bigger factor in hearts so I doubt it would really change the level of satisfaction.

me and one of my younger co-workers decided to go to a bridge club once a week and start playing there, and it was funny because here we were in our 20s and everyone else there was 60+, we definitely stuck out. Though it was always nice to get compliments about how nice it was to see young people playing bridge, hahaha.

Same except without a buddy. I just started going. 60+ people who make a point to go out and do a social thing together every week like that are awesome. So much fun. And yeah, I was often the center of attention because I was 24.

Your very first comment was that you are not interested because there are more rules than euchre. I said, but it's a better game than euchre. You said, well I don't want to take the time to learn it and my friends probably wouldn't either. I said ok it's not for you then. And somehow I'm being like, offensive here?

I apologize if my frankness rubbed you the wrong way. My intent with the topic was to spread the love of bridge, but your posts all seemed like you solidly weren't for it, so I was just letting it go rather than try to berate you for having different tastes.

Should have packaged this up with my previous post but I was at work, didn't read the full topic at once and I got a bit disconnected from who all said what. But now that I saw the bigger picture again I felt compelled to elaborate.

I'd say to someone who doesn't know bridge but has played trick-taking games, I could cover everything reasonably well in about half an hour with time for clarifying questions and whatnot.

When I read your comment I took it to mean even that would be far beyond worth it to your friends since you used 5 minutes as an example of something acceptable. If you don't actually think 30 minutes of rule learning is too much, then I'm curious just how long you were estimating it would take to learn. An entire day? A weekend?

The bidding system isn't as simple as, say, spades, since you can select the trump suit as well as how many tricks you'll win. The scoring is pretty out there but I don't even consider that something a new player should care about and if playing casually you'd just play by the hand for fun and probably not finish a proper match. Scoring can factor into play later when you really understand the bidding.

Well sure. If "playing the game requires learning rules" is a detractor, then bridge is not for your group

And the situational numbers thing is not a fair metric to judge the merits of a game on, imo. If you can't play bridge that day, fine, you can't play bridge that day. That doesn't make it less good or a different game better, though, I don't think

examples of trick-taking games: hearts, spades, euchre, rook, pinochle (last two a subset known as "point-trick" games)

Oh yeah, something I noticed due to fantasy but more of a real life NFL observation

Did anyone else notice Kamara suddenly tied Cook for rushing TDs after that game? And they were playing against the Vikings...

Part of me thought, I wonder if they just wanted to show them up in a certain way

(I know, football teams don't need extra reason to want to score 6 TDs, but ya know Kamara getting 6 TDs all rushing is pretty wild, well then again Brees has no ribs...)

Few years ago we added IDP to the league

Year after that we took it back out

Well apparently my commissioner didn't undo the IDP scoring we had set up

Irrelevant

Well, unless your offensive player gets a forced fumble and a tackle on an interception

Compared to most leagues my Tyreek effectively scored a TD today

26 rushing yards. 10 games.

Yeah ESPN predicted me as 9th place in a 10 team league after draft day. Finished 4th, however it would've been tied for 1st if I'd been using the app myself. (don't know tiebreaker situation from memory)

One week near game time when there was a covid rescheduled game, I was trying to text my gf to explain to her exactly how to navigate the uncertainty by leaving a spot open during the 1pm games but she was too busy at the time to focus on it and benched tyreek and lost by like 7. So it's not a "if I'd just started X over Y" it's literally like interface failure lol.)

And now favored to win the ship. I can see how ESPN got there though because basically most picks I made after round 5 were busts for 90-100% of the season.
