Nemesis I mostly knew from my occasional glances at Mercs topics where he got incredible durability respect. I felt like Nemesis being in mid against most of the characters would result in boring stalemate matches, so at least opponents in High would be able to kill him

Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

Like yeah you don't need to know their history and personal details but if you never heard their names you gotta be living a heck of an isolated life from any sort of culture.

I'm relatively young and "hip" and "with it", and I've seen either of them mentioned only by Critikal/dunkey/similar "topical" Youtubers or briefly during the looting and suicide forest controversies. They're big in their one niche that doesn't intersect much with the realms most people venture into, and they have very little exposure outside that

I may join you! There's almost no chance I get heavily into it but it was the dream for a while as someone who played PSO heavily back in the day. Would be nice to at least see what the game is like before New Genesis comes out, and having folks to chat with as I do so would be all the better. 2+2=4. If you want it to not equal four, then you'd specify the context in which it doesn't (if it wasn't already clear). Sure, technically, 2+2!=4 if you're working in a system with a base of 4 or lower, or in plenty of algebraic groups, or with a different definition of "2" or "+" or "=" or "4", but it's beyond asinine and pedantic to try to well ackshaully this.

In fact, it being only true in relevant contexts makes it a better example. You can painfully contort many of the things Trump says to make them make "correct". "Less testing means less cases"? Yes, 2+2=1 is true of some algebraic groups of order three under normal definitions of the symbols. Unless you're talking about the situation, you're wrong, you fucked up, and to argue otherwise is disingenuous and dishonest. Trump in that example is disingenuous and dishonest (in addition to being an idiot). To call that a bad example for the reason you gave is... somewhere on the above spectrum.

Uncontroversy is a strength. If everybody thinks a song is fine, with one or two people who hate it and a few who love it, it can do well against opponents who are polarizing, depending on how the exact demographics look. For example, Emil went against Bodhisattva Kill and Laguerra del Mundo. Both of these songs have huge proponents (me and az, for example), but a lot of people hate that style. If 20 people love it and 20 people hate LdM and 2 people hate, 3 people love, and 35 people are fine with Emil, then if the people who love LdM and were going to vote for it regardless are also the people who hate Emil and a couple of the Emil people love both but prefer the latter, then the score might look something like 18-22 Emil.

Of course, those made-up numbers are obscuring perhaps the biggest reason it won: hilariously low votals. That contest had like 25 voters. You're gonna get all kinds of weirdness with small sample sizes.

Anyway, let's look at the reviews of the contest after Emil won:

GOOD SONG GOOD WINNER!:
KCF: Great winners in back-to-back years despite the majority of the two contests being disappointments.
tazzy: Scars > Extreme > Karma > Reset > Zero > Hope > Papilliones > Elferia > Truth > MGS2 Theme > Sphillia
arti: Did not expect it to win the contest when I nominated it, but pretty good champion anyway.
barrel: Good winner, better than last year's.

Orichamaru: Emil Karma is far from champion material by any means... it is one of three retirees this year I actually outright disliked

It's basically what I remember and how I described. A few fans, a few haters, and a lot of people who thought it was ok, but not exceptional in any way, and didn't want it to win... despite presumably voting for it often.

There's been discussions about stuff like this on Discord in the past (https://discordapp.com/channels/87835278454050816/SPACE 165663406735622145/590277430615474186, https://discordapp.com/channels/87835278454050816/SPACE 165663406735622145/590293496632705025), where people both notice that winners in the past tended to be the songs nobody hates rather than songs a lot of people loved, and express a preference for champions that push the envelope and do something unique and interesting rather than ones they like ok but don't think are special.

I'm not arguing that Endeavour deserves to win more than Isoleucine because a lot of people dislike it. I'm arguing that they both deserve to win. If too many people hate Endeavour for it to be a good winner... then it won't win lmao.

The trend of lowest common denominator songs winning was bucked (probably; Mycro did some analysis on this to the contrary) in VGMC 13, and I would really like it to stay that way. I'd rather have fucking DNF win that some mediocrity I can't muster any strong opinions about. Winners should be special, the best in their class, not whatever is bland enough for everybody to swallow so that polarizing opposition gets steamrolled. Obviously this depends on the voting base's tastes and not cerebral arguments, but I still want to strongly disagree with Gamebop in his core thesis that winners should be unhated. That's the antithesis of what these contests should be

This makes sense, if you think about it. Art is about emotion, examination, and going places people have never gone before to discover and investigate new things. The only way to create something that nobody hates is to ensure that it cant be loved either. Remove enough spice from soup, and youll just end up with water.
Human taste is as varied as human fingerprints, Wit said. Nobody will like everything, everybody dislikes something, someone loves that thing you hatebut at least being hated is better than nothing. To risk metaphor, a grand painting is often about contrast: brightest brights, darkest darks. Not grey mush. That a thing is hated is not proof that its great art, but the lack of hatred is certainly proof that it is not.

In other words, a champion that is polarizing is better than one that satisfies a lowest common denominator mediocrity that everybody thinks is just "fine". That clearly doesn't apply one-to-one to Iso here, but the core of your argument favors winners like Emil Karma which are totally forgettable and largely unbeloved. Champions should stand out, and one that promotes extreme opinions, at the very least, fulfills this criterion
