Yeah, it's one thing for the Vikings to think this, but the game very much backs them up and makes the colonised come across as useless/pathetic and being improved by the "greater Norse culture" When currently that same culture is used by white racists in the same way it has unfortunate (and unintended) meaning when you only paint the Vikings as great and don't show any of what made them bad save for the starting bad guy. Both supporting colonisation and racist rhetoric very likely wasn't what they intended, but it carries that message regardless. I think the author is correct that Ubisoft has a "blind spot" when it comes to whites colonizing whites. If the Saxons had been black or brown, there's no way they would have gone with the narrative. --- |
