yea i can't think of a legitimately bad performance in the ST from any of the main cast

This is the singular thing that makes the ST tolerable and the PT unbearable in my eyes. The ST's disappointing character arcs, pointless casino sidequests, and overall trainwreck that was TRoS are a lot easier to tolerate with the core cast being played by likeable actors trying their best to spin shit into gold, or at least rolling with the punches in a way that I found endearing. On the other hand, key moments in the PT that should have otherwise been monumental were absolutely ruined by robotic dialogue and lifelessly-delivered lines, oftentimes from otherwise-great actors. Which in my book goes to show that Lucas is of greatest benefit to the franchise when he's not in the director's chair.

Sorry, but I had to vote Other: Chac from FF X-2. No FF boss has ever managed to infect me with such passionate hatred as Chac, and for the life of me I can't fathom how people can beat her without cheesing the system with Congrats or Trigger Happy + Catnip (and even with the latter it boiled down to luck of the draw).

I probably would've voted Emerald Weapon otherwise, since I died to him a lot when I was young and felt genuinely shout-out-loud triumphant when I finally managed to beat him. Yiazmat is more of a stamina test than anything; even though he does ramp things up considerably in the remaining five million HP, I've beaten him on three separate playthroughs and was only killed by him once iirc. Ozma, iirc, is a luck-of-the-draw boss - either he cheeses you right out of the gate with insurmountable status ailments, or you beat him in a few rounds. FF8's Omega Weapon is one of those weird bosses that actually got harder as time went on; I beat him without effort the first couple of times, but in later playthroughs he always seemed to catch me with his insta-party-kill attack right when my Holy Wars wore off, and I figured he wasn't worth the effort to fight again.

I too went into the Great Crystal with a map (and I love the background music), so I'm more forgiving of it than most. Having said that, I still voted for it.

I think it's fair to say that the Pharos and Great Crystal are good examples of designing a punishing late-game gauntlet the right and wrong ways, respectively.

How the fuck is Cid Highwind leading here? Did people play games besides FF7?

Sometimes the popular choice is that way for good reason.

Orlandu / Orlandeau / however you're supposed to spell it nowadays is an unquestioned boss in battle, but not a supremely compelling character in his own right (he's a good-enough character who fits a role, there's just not much there to make him stand out in this regard). Nobody remembers Thundergod Cid for his witty lines or deep character arc; they remember him for essentially being a no-strings-attached god-mode character.

Cid Kramer has a good amount of potential as a character, but iirc he never really gets over the hurdle of being a major pussy.

Doctor Cidolfus Demen Bunansa is a hammy overractor, and not in a good way.

Bananaman Cid does potentially lead to one of the most poignant moments in the franchise, and I have every reason to be biased towards FF6. But dying of starvation isn't really a personality trait.

FF4 Cid is alright as far as old-school characters go, but falls into the trap of I'mma sacrifice my body to save this situation about two or three instances after that maneuver stopped being fashionable.

Cid Fabool and Al-Bhed Cid could give Highwind a run for his money character-wise, but aren't party members; this may be a semantical difference at face-value, but party members by default tend to get more screentime and more time to develop, as is the case with Highwind.

hockeybub89 posted...
Yeah it's weird that making a buggy multiplayer game was their big controversy. I love Bethesda games, but they should have been dragged through the mud like CDPR over a decade ago for these buggy messes.

For Skyrim and Fallout 4, it seemed to me that the major bugs were broken quests; unless the main quest gets broken, I feel like only the hardcore fans would raise a stink over that, while the more casual fan would get annoyed, shrug, and move on to the next diversion (or maybe not even notice that anything was broken). Broken quests also make for less colorful reactions than graphical glitches or AI bugs. More obvious things - like the backwards-flying dragons introduced in one of the early patches - got a lot more negative attention, and got quickly fixed; on the other hand, the notoriously-breakable 'Blood on the Ice' quest didn't get any patch treatment for almost six months.

I think Fallout 76 finally got its fair share of kicks to the groin because it was an obvious and lazy cash-grab from the start, and the game itself couldn't muster the goodwill necessary to help look past the issues.

You play as ff9 cid for a very brief moment

I mean, that only counts as 'party leader' in the strictest literal sense.

I singled out Highwind in this regard because it's actually one of my favorite bits in FF7: Barret, after a moment's introspection, realizes that he doesn't have what it takes to be a leader, and dumps the responsibility on Cid (who's off in the corner napping), simply because they couldn't get anywhere without the Highwind, and the Highwind belongs to Cid. What really made the scene was how quickly Cid became gung-ho over his newfound responsibility, an attitude he carries onward through his missions as party leader (or at least the Corel Reactor train chase, my memory's foggy on the rest) before Cloud and Tifa return to the party. It was just the right mix of comedy and character-building that it really stuck with me.

Yes. It took me a couple months to get through the first few chapters; read ten pages, fall asleep, read ten more pages, fall asleep. Consequently, I did not shed a single tear when Tom Bombadil was cut from the movies.

On the other hand, once the story advanced to Bree I couldn't put it down, and burned through it and the rest of the trilogy in a week or two. I still count certain bits of RotK among my favorite prose in fiction, such as the ride of the Rohirrim and Sauron suddenly coming to the realization that his enemies intend to destroy the Ring, and how supremely fucked he is in that moment.

People always say vaan wasn't the protagonist. Who was?

At extreme face-value it's Vaan. Ashe is clearly who the developers wanted you to believe was the protagonist by the end of the story. Balthier is the thinking man's protagonist. Basch was probably the protagonist at some point in the development.

Vaan may not be the protagonist in actuality, but his continued forced presence in the plot actively drags the game down. He has most of the irritating qualities of Tidus, but without any personality or sense of payoff to his character.

I would consider Squall a divisive character at worst because, shockingly, I quite liked him at one time: as a painfully introverted teen myself, I found many of his habits to be (for better or worse) quite relatable, not the least of which being his overindulgence of inner monologue followed up by blurting out some half-formed statement as if the people listening were supposed to know the full context of said monologue.

Nice find, TC. As much as Fallout 3 deserves its criticism, I'd much rather link to a positive video on what NV does right (as opposed to a more negative video on what FO3 does wrong) in those moments when I can't be arsed to defend it myself. Hbomberguy has a particular knack for zeroing in on and elaborating upon my impressions of both games, and it's nice to now have a full-length vid on NV instead of just briefly touching on it at the end of the FO3 vid. I particularly appreciate him touching on how intertwined NV's world is designed to be, and how seemingly-innocuous fetch / delivery quests often lead to a better quest / larger part of the narrative. I wouldn't have minded him touching on the more well-developed structure of the worldspace itself (settlements exist in logical places near supply lines, deathclaws and sentry bots aren't just randomly roaming the highways, things like that), but you can only fit so much even into a 90-minute vid.

I'll second Speed Racer. It's definitely flawed and not for everyone - it can't decide whether it wants to be a kid's movie or a more edgy YA movie, and too often these halves mix like oil and water. (though it's hard to pin down the reason: I couldn't exactly tell you why Spirtle and Chim-Chim's antics in the racecar factory are terrible while the ninja attack and Greco-Roman wrestling bit work quite well).

But the visual style is very unique, and the parts of the movie that do work do so fantastically. And between this and his work on The Incredibles two years earlier, it solidified my opinion that Michael Giacchino is one of the best movie composers working today.

The funny thing is that, expansive as the hbomberguy video is, there's plenty of glaring flaws it doesn't cover, such as:

  • Little Lamplight
  • the Morrowind-style accuracy die rolls they snuck into the regular non-VATS gunplay while disguising it as an actual FPS - can't tell you how many times I watched a sniper bullet enter the body of my target and have it not register as a hit because reasons
  • the disconnect between the self-importance of the main quest and the actual game world. A different critic said it best (and I'm paraphrasing): 'Imagine a version of Skyrim where there are no actual dragons; several people in the main quest talk at length about what a threat they are, but you never actually see a dragon. The only evidence you see in Skyrim of the dragon's existence is a singed peasant sitting outside the Whiterun gates asking for a potion to heal his burns. That's Fallout 3.'
  • also pretty sure he neglected to pick apart the ridiculous and highly-exploitable Karma system, but it's been awhile since I watched and I could be forgetting that part

Fallout 3 is such a pile of shit guys lol be real. Like you can like the game but I don't know how anyone can say with a straight face that it's good

Even after the ending caused me to be so enraged at the game that it retroactively laid all its faults bare, FO3 still had value as a fun fuckabout wasteland sandbox, one which I continued to sink dozens of hours into wandering and finding exploits. And even then, it took me about a year to really appreciate NV and how well it fixed nearly every issue I had with FO3 (playing Dead Money for the first time was the turning point in which NV went from 'more of Fallout 3' to 'game of the decade' in my eyes).

Nowadays, FO3 has no value left; what few itches that aren't scratched by NV are now far more effectively scratched by FO4 (which are almost exclusively related to settlement-building and similar fuckabout-ery).

Bethesda has a habit of not formally announcing their upcoming days until they're a year or less away from release; while it was effective for hype, the silence could indeed be maddening at times. I remember getting pretty damn hyped for those elaborate troll vids teasing Fallout 4 news about a year before Bethesda officially announced it. (not really relevant to the topic at hand, but I also remember a window of several years where people would wonder aloud if dragons would ever return to the ES universe, and of course lore purists would shoot them down hard for suggesting this).

Of course this was five years ago, when they were still a competent developer: nowadays this tactic comes off as a shy teenager doodling in his sketchbook and not wanting anyone to peek. I still have no idea why they announced ESVI so prematurely, other than to soften the blow of them announcing ES: Blades and FO76. They can't even get Creation Club content out nowadays without significant delays - to reiterate, they've been sitting on content in which someone else has done the work for them for over a year and they can't even be bothered to put together the game updates necessary to release it.

The past couple years have caused me to lose my faith in Bethesda's ability to deliver a game that will be worth the wait and secrecy.

Phantom Menace was one of the first (if not the first) big-budget CGI-fueled spectacles I saw as a teen; CGI of course quickly became an overused crutch that more often than not hinders a movie instead of elevating it (and was also soon to be thoroughly trounced by the LotR trilogy in terms of being CGI spectacles that were also actually good movies), but at the time it was quite a feast for the eyes and imagination. So even to this day TPM gets a fair amount of nostalgia-fueled leeway with me when it comes to how I feel about the SW prequels on an individual basis.
