While I can see how a lot of people have this point of view, I think the situation is different with Apu and I hope youll hear me out when I explain why I think that. For one thing Apu was one of the very few Indian characters in American popular culture for a long time. There are a bunch of times that I heard Indian people be called Apu by people who thought they were being funny. Also while the character Apu is fairly intelligent on the show they play up a ton of Indian stereotypes with him and sometimes the punchline is just him yelling something like Oh Kolkata! or something similar. Its subjective whether or not something like that is funny but it does make it a little uncomfortable when you realize it was a white dude voicing those lines. And it isnt like Hank Azarea just started feeling this way. There have been public conversations about Apu for a very long time and Ive heard him in talk shows going back years talking about how he himself wasnt sure if it was ok for him to be doing that role and that he wanted to listen to people and that ultimately it should be up to the viewers. --- YOU control the numbers of leches. -Sal Vulcano |
