TL;DR : It's ridiculously easy to have some one placed under conservatorship particularly if they are old and/or female and conservators have basically complete control of their wards and their ward's assets. Conversely, it is difficult to challenge an existing conservatorship and harder still to end it.

Its ridiculous that a single mental breakdown over a decade ago has enabled her father to rob her of her own independence. Thats sick! Thats unjust! Its a gross violation of her rights, and it could happen to any of us!
Ill be back later with an article about how messed up this whole conservatorship business really is.

Man, James Buchanan really was just a big ball of suck, wasnt he?
Yeah, he was a weak leader, but also he was pretty pro-slavery (he lauded the infamous Dred Scott decision, for example) and pretty much looked the other way as Southern politicians in his own government transferred stockpiles of arms and supplies south while states were literally starting to secede. About which he did nothing.
So he was both bad at his job and also actively evil.

Andrew Johnson sabotaged Reconstruction to the benefit of the old Southern aristocracy(who had, remember, sparked a civil war less than ten years prior) and got impeached for it. When a moderate Republican Senator voted against conviction out of concern for the ramifications of future relations between the Congress and the Presidency, Johnson rewarded them by issuing a blanket pardon of all Confederates.

Edit: Oh, and FDR should be no lower than 2nd.

TopicAre gender roles purely social constructs, or does biology also play a part
ElatedVenusaur
06/28/21 3:03:07 PM

Only the very earliest societal roles would have had any biological basis. It's worth mentioning that nomadic and semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers tend to get most of their nutrition via gathering and/or agriculture: hunting is/was important, but it isn't going to provide the consistent, daily nutrition(at least not with primitive weaponry). Even so, there's plenty of reason to believe that these barriers were not always strict IIRC, it's actually pastoralists that tend to have the strictest gender roles, as maintaining your goats/sheep/cows/whatever is basically a primary source of nutrition, clothing, and wealth.
Oh, and another (unrelated) thing: barter was never a thing.

Nowadays, there's really very little reason for gender roles to exist other than from enforcement of existing societal norms, which cuts against women and men alike, in different ways.

One of my best friends is AMAB* non-binary. They initially thought they were a trans woman, but they realized they still feel like a boy sometimes. Theyve gotten hormone therapy and are getting bottom surgery.
The other is a coworker, AFAB^ They have not gone on hormones and I dont know they ever intend to, but have griped to me about how people treat me like a women *flexes legit impressive biceps* which Im not. Im happy they feel comfortable saying that to me.
Unrelatedly, theyre a stimulant fiend: they vape and suck down energy drinks and matcha lattes, so they remind me of a squirrel sometimes.

Hard to feel bad for a nation (Inca) that cuts unborn babies from the womb and hangs their mothers with the umbilical cord for not paying taxes to an emperor 2000 miles away, justifying it as the divine will of the sun/god

They were very similar to the conquistadores in some ways
That doesn't even come to close to the sheer brutality of the Conquistadors. Like, they make the damned Aztecs look nice, even if we're assuming Spanish sources weren't exaggerating how brutal they were. The Conquistadors were greedy jerks who were almost uniformly deeply in debt and thus desperate and aggrieved and genocided natives by the thousands.

A cat that doesn't go outside doesn't try very hard to get out. Cats are very much tied to known territory and tend to approach new environments slowly and cautiously.

I remember one cat I had very briefly: he died of a heart defect very young was trying to catch a bug against the door, but the door was unlocked, so when he fell against it, it opened and he tumbled outside and fell off the stoop.
He immediately bolted up the steps and cried pathetically to be let in. Granted, he was kind of coward.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jun/23/climate-change-dangerous-thresholds-un-report
Even the IPCC is getting in on the doom!
According to AFP, the IPCC draft details at least 12 potential tipping points. The worst is yet to come, affecting our childrens and grandchildrens lives much more than our own, the report says.
The reportmay be subject to minor changes in the coming months as the IPCC shifts its focus to a key executive summary for policymakers.
It says that with 1.1C of warming above pre-industrial levels clocked so far, the climate is already changing. A decade ago, scientists believed that limiting global warming to 2C above mid-19th-century levels would be enough to safeguard the future.
That goal is enshrined in the 2015 Paris agreement, adopted by nearly 200 nations who vowed to collectively cap warming at well below 2C and 1.5C if possible. On current trends the world is heading for 3C at best.
Earlier models predicted that Earth-altering climate change was not likely before 2100. But the UN draft report says prolonged warming even beyond 1.5C could produce progressively serious, centuries-long and, in some cases, irreversible consequences.

It basically focuses on the war in the Middle East(both before and during) and its fallout, primarily from the perspective of the British and the Turks. For example, it goes into a lot of detail about Sykes-Picot, how everyone felt about it, and how it shaped matters both during and after the war the Brits intentionally tried to occupy as much of the Mid East themselves as possible in an attempt to subvert the agreement.
