Honestly I think Mark Hamill was perfect and it's based on two things.

  1. This series wanted to establish Skeletor as a credible threat, which he very rarely was in the 80's series.
  2. They did not want to completely abandon the camp that Alan Oppenheimer brought to the character, which (as I recall, it's been a while) they did for the '02 series.
So, camp and credible threat to the heroes. Who better than the Joker?

But otherwise I'm with you on the animation. My least favorite scene was the boat fight in Episode 3, where you can see two characters fighting at a time while others are just standing around, despite it ostensibly being a big donnybrook.

Note how Flauros deftly changed the focus of the argument.

Magnus says it's dumb to call indigenous Americans "Indians".

Flauros said "Oh so no one EVER called them Indians?"

Like that's not the argument bro. The argument is calling them "Indians" in the year of our dog 2021. You'll note we no longer have a baseball team called "the Indians" and it was that way since the end of 2020, not yesterday. It was literally one of the last holdouts.

Unless you wanna be the last holdout on this, in which case, be my guest. Even Riku had the late-arriving sense to edit his post.

I mean they definitely looked up what little lore existed for some of these characters and played with it.

One in particular being the fact that just what the heck is Scare Glow? He was released as a toy before he could get any serious amount of lore so people had a bunch of theories about him being a time-displaced Skeletor from the future.

I don't care about whatever social commentary this is about but if outside influences want to alter the original writer's intentions I consider that censorship whether it's removing or adding features they didn't intend.
I counter that with the notion that video games are not works spawned from a single person (most of the time). They're a collaborative effort. To imply that only the head writer should have a say in the creative effort is to discount the character designer, the dialogue writer, the art director, the voice actor, etc.

Okay from what I've been able to piece together my opinion is the following:

  1. Having a balance of perspectives in the creative process is important and gamedev is legendarily terrible at this.
  2. Having more women in this particular discussion would not necessarily have resulted in a Rivet without feminine features.
  3. As none of us were in that room, we can't know for sure how these decisions all went down. Could have been toxic af. Could have been respectful and ultimately democratic.

The Bad Batch takes place between episodes 3 and 4, so calling it a sequel to The Clone Wars is a little misleading. But it is true that it's got a similar style and even some returning characters.
Specifying that it takes place after Ep 3 is important, and that's a good point to make. I still call it a sequel series given it has MANY returning characters. :)

So there's "Clone Wars" and "The Clone Wars".

Both series are based between Episodes 2 and 3.

"Clone Wars" was begun in 2003 and was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack, etc.) It's a 2D animated "microseries" that has two seasons. The first season shows a bunch of vignettes of the war and then moves on to more serialized storytelling in the second season, but it ended when Revenge of the Sith came out.

It's a pretty quick watch and I heavily recommend it, but it's not considered "canon".

"The Clone Wars" is a much larger (and fully canon) CGI series that was largely directed by Dave Filoni after Episode 3 came out, but still taking place between Episodes 2 and 3. For much of the early seasons, the take is that it's an anthology series, where each episode (or small series of episodes) focuses on a different front in the war. It was REAL shaky out of the gate, but there are some incredible stories to be found in it.

Also there's no common cast of characters the series follows. You could be with Anakin and his Padawan Ahsoka Tano in one episode, then another could focus on Ki-Adi Mundi, or the focus could shift to a group of clones, or Yoda. That said, Ahsoka Tano and a clone named Captain Rex serve as major recurring new characters for the series, so they get a lot of development.

It had a "final season" that came out last year, although there's a sequel series in "The Bad Batch" that's currently in its first season.
