In the Filmation series, Teela's recklessness and ill-temper in situations that she does not agree with often lead to poor judgment, which results in risky situations. Unaware of Adam's dual-identity and duties that go with it, Teela often scolds him for being work-shy, fearful and unattentive to his training.

Source: Grayskull wiki

And it's been a long time for me, but I seem to recall every so often that Teela would be suspicious of the Adam/He-Man dynamic, but it never actually led anywhere.

For me the reason for Teela abandoning everyone she knew was pretty unbelievable, but then I never really watched the original series so idk the backstory much.
Well that was predicated on Randor getting really mad and banish-y after, admittedly, learning about the death of his son, being unaware of his double life, and learning that his wife knew. He kicked Duncan (Teela's adopted father) out of the country and basically the entire team fell apart. Teela lost her best friend who was also lying to her, felt super betrayed and that was it.

It's heavy, but not out of the question, and it's meant to kick off the main plot anyway.

You mentioned before about the game being weird with urgency in the main plot, but you could still do anything you wanted to. I think that's an artifact of it being a remake of the first game. Future games in the series are better about cutting off your ability to explore when things are serious and urgent.

Also in the first game on PS2, you couldn't explore once you began the final chapter, because it automatically threw you into the big fight leading up to Millennium Tower. It's so weird how you actually have to initiate it and that's when all the bad guys decide to show up.

I've beat the first and am I'd say a good two-thirds into the second.

I was prepared for the general plot of these games to show their age. They were visual novels made in the 80s, back when all video games were new and the genre hadn't solidified. I'm fine with them being hokey, the twists being pretty obvious, and so forth.

What I'm not fine with is the gameplay being such a slog of trial and error.

For those of you who have played games like Phoenix Wright or others that involve detective-style investigation and interviewing, you're probably familiar with the concept of just clicking on dialogue to exhaust it so you get the go ahead to continue on with the story.

This is kind of in FDC as well. You're given a list of actions, and from there, typically a sublist for each one. For example, if you're talking to a person, you can select "Talk" and then the subject "Ask about murder". There are also several others, like the average "Look/Examine", one called "Call/Engage", which is typically used for talking to two different people in a scene, and some other ones like "Think" and "Remember".

The problem is the game wants you to follow a pretty specific path and not deviate from it. Therefore, sometimes you can ask someone about a topic, they'll have nothing to say, but they will AFTER you've asked them about another topic. Sometimes you have to ask them about a particular topic multiple times, and one or twice this required my character to essentially be badgering the person they were talking to until they finally spilled.

Also there's no obvious rhythm to it most of the time. Every once in a while you'll get a "Ask about murder" and they'll mention "Carl" so then you know to "Ask about Carl" but most of the time you just have to exhaust all topics, then hit the vague "What they know" topic and they'll be like "Oh I forgot! I meant to tell you about this suddenly important thing that just happened!" Then once you do that, you go through all the topics AGAIN to pick up anything.

I've been in scenes where I literally have to go into a faculty lounge at a school and waste time exhausting all the dialogue with a teacher in there and learning NOTHING about the case before the actually important person to the case walks in, then I can go talk to them, listen to them be evasive, and then leave, and realize I've accomplished absolutely nothing on this trip.

This is not to say the game gives you no hints. When new topics or actions are added to the menu, they're in yellow text, but if the topic/action already existed in the list, there's no indication which way you need to go. I just wish they used that yellow text throughout for marking anything that might be important to bring up so I'm not just going over and over again.

Still the graphics look gorgeous, and the sound design and voice acting are on point.
