I wonder how many people calling for LeVar Burton even actually watched him. I didn't see him either so I have no personal opinion on it, but I remember lots of people stumping for him before he was even announced, so I'm skeptical. If he was good then I'd have no problem with it, but if he was bad as people are saying, then you gotta take that into consideration

Who cares, his selection was a farce to begin with and nobody liked this guy. It's not going to set some kind of precedent because this thing already happens and there is already little consistency to "cancel culture".

I definitely think there's an element of them wanting to walk back a bad decision without necessarily acknowledging why it was such a big screw-up, this was just a convenient excuse

Funny how the people who constantly rail against "cancel culture", usually for people who have done far worse, suddenly don't mind it when it happens to someone they don't care about.

Not defending him in any way, their (his own?) choice was a huge fucking miss and I'm glad they walked it back.

Even the more informal stuff is so cliche, like they always gotta play Don't Stop Believin' and a bunch of other crap, every time. Or at least that's how weddings for white people go

You're never interested in engaging with a topic to learn some new things or take a different approach, it's just you doing everything to hold your stance and repeat "well different people have different opinions... it's okay to like different things..." ad nauseam. Wouldnt it be possible you might have less biodiversity, though? If people just get rid of their lawns and dont replace it with anything, youd have less diversity

Okay and people who are against lawns don't generally suggest doing this. I swear you just act obtuse on purpose on all these little details. If you wanna keep your lawn then fine but you don't have to constantly act like everything that challenges your worldview is 100% incorrect

I feel like this was already explained but yes, biodiversity is important. It can help introduce beneficial pollinators, fertilizers, predators, etc. which help maintain the ecosystem

Edit: For example if you are growing crops it's nice to have flowers around to attract bees, which will help your crops grow better. Having just grass doesn't help you get bees

Well lots of climates that aren't suitable for lawns have them anyway. If you're not in a drought prone state then it's not as bad but it still lacks biodiversity and needs to be mowed, which is not great

Even if you haven't researched this at a detailed level I feel like if you've just observed plants in your life, it's common sense. It's easy to see how easily weeds grow and grass is hard to keep alive - but instead of being like "hmm what are some pleasant plants that grow easily", people just take that as a cue to pump as much effort into their lawn as possible. Just find some low maintenance plants!

Also, lawns are not evergreen in many climates, but surely people know what evergreens are, it's like come on, get with the picture

I said the problem is then maintaining of them. So, if we fix that, they should fix the problem, right?

And the "fix" here is to not have grass. It requires a lot of water, needs regular trimming and is meant to cover a large surface area.

Plenty of groundcovers are out there which demand much less water and don't need to be trimmed. Or you can hardscape or mulch parts of it with intermittent plants instead.

wrong

we are ripping out the old rules and fixing what we can. It is simply not acceptable for things to be the way they have been.

Dude I hate lawns but you have to be practical about it. My point here is the lawns already exist, whether a home buyer likes them or not. People aren't buying homes and putting in lawns where there weren't any - well some probably are, but most of them were already there.

I would have loved it if homes with already xeriscaped yards were readily available, or would even settle for one with workable land that's not covered in grass, but that's largely not the case. I don't have the time to go tearing out all my grass and re-landscaping it right away, or the money to pay someone to do it for me. I want to do what I can but converting is a process that can take a long time.

And, as I alluded to with my own situation, some people really don't like lawns, but we don't have much of a choice because that's what poor planning going back centuries has left us with. I think people definitely don't do as much as they should to gradually xeriscape their lawns out, but in the mean time, I don't think it's crazy to do enough maintenance to keep it from getting even harder to fix up in the long run, as long as you aren't some insane Hank Hill type who needs it completely perfect.

so do it in a park or field? idk why not having a lawn means you're playing in rocks

I agree though I like not sharing a wall with someone, and admittedly that probably falls under the same category of "it's my space" arrogant suburban planning, so I can't really judge. Of course if they didn't build most new buildings cheaply with paper thin walls now maybe I could stomach sharing a wall. But yards can be nice to have if done right, just a little space to get outside or have a garden or something, so idk if apartments are the answer (for me at least).

We definitely planned all this poorly, and I know I can't do anything about it at a large scale anyway, but I still feel bad about my contribution... but there really isn't any type of dwelling that perfectly meets all my desires

It's the number one thing I've hated about home ownership since summer came around. I just feel so dumb watering it all the time (it doesn't even get healthier) and pulling weeds out of the grass (maybe I should just leave them). I got a reel mower though and I have to say it's not that bad, sure it's not as convenient as a motorized one, but it takes like an hour once a week once you get the hang of using it. Sadly most people are too dumb/lazy for that though. I saw a guy down the street with a riding mower and was like fucking come on dude. Save that for the parks, a typical suburban house is like 0.1 acres of grass.

I don't have an HOA so I guess I can do whatever I want with it but that requires a lot of labor and effort up front. And I feel obligated to keep it looking okay cause you know how people can bitch about petty stuff (plus resale), but personally if it were up to me I'd more or less just leave that shit be while slowly xeriscaping

The FDA hasn't approved the vaccine fully so that deserves skepticism, but they're just a bunch of meddlesome bureaucrats who are holding back alternative treatments from being approved

What a strange topic. All of you public transportation people are delusional.

Excuse me if I enjoy my car and going where/when I want and getting to stay away from all the smelly weirdos and homeless people jerking off and screaming at strangers on busses.

I generally drive from Florida to the Chicago area straight through once a year to visit family. My car gets 45-50mpg highway, and it is cheaper and less hassle than airplane tickets for the fam and a rental car (which I would need because who the fuck travels somewhere to stay in one place. Even visiting friends for me requires an hours drive sometimes)

You guys live in some fantasy land where not only are buses clean and safe and lovely to ride on, but that there's a bus that on command will take you exactly where you need to at any given moment.

Ugh, it's like none of you have ever worked in retail, a gas station, or fast food. It is a treat and pleasure to get to avoid the disgustingly idiotic and rude general populous by having personal transportation. My skin crawls just thinking about having to lower myself to get on the bus with a bunch of gross "public transportation" people that are like they were from people of Walmart dot Com but 100x worse and deal with the fucking bums and crazies

This is an absolutely disgusting post. There are tactful ways to say you're concerned about safety on public transportation instead of just being like "I don't wanna go near those gross poors".

The reason people like that exist is due to a lot of the same kind of decision making that led to our poor city planning in the first place anyway. Hopefully you'd assume if we ever re-focus there, we get actual attempts to address income inequality too. Plus as adjl said if you have more people in general using transit you should feel safer

I think that on the sides of the road, we should have some additional paving such as concrete, and have this as an area for people to walk on. It can be slightly elevated to keep cars from driving on it, and they can put things like trees, lights and planter boxes here and there.

Nicht is always so weird about everything. I don't think at all about what a huge burden it was to get my license. It's like a total of 10-20 hours of classes, waiting at the DMV and doing the road test combined. The rest is just practice driving which isn't the most fun but at least you're driving. And since I was 15/16 at the time it was pretty exciting (and scary) to be behind the wheel, it's not something teens think of as a big chore
