I saw this story.

Look, Pitbulls are amazing pets. Loyal, fun, and extremely loving.

But at the end of the day, having one that has had a negative past around your family/children is grossly irresponsible. They can be rehabilitated but Ive seen this story way too many times before and that task should be left for someone without children.

This is pretty much all that needs to be said on the subject. Categorically hating the breed is unfair, and efforts should be made to help those that have been rescued from bad situations, but those efforts need to be made by people that know what they're doing and in controlled environments. Otherwise, it becomes a very dangerous situation for everyone involved.

It doesn't help that people have really latched on to the "it seems to be a milder illness" thing and are therefore resistant to doing anything more to limit its spread, especially going into the holidays. Never mind that data's still pretty limited on that and even the most optimistic results are only suggesting a ~29% reduction in hospitalization rates, which can easily be drowned out by increased infection rates. The folks that have been banging the "viruses tend to mutate to be less deadly!" drum since the whole thing began have been quite happy to jump to conclusions based on those preliminary impressions, because confirmation bias.

Not necessarily. A company that makes a habit of dumping chemical waste into a nearby harbour instead of processing it properly to minimize how much time their employees were exposed to it would be doing something beneficial for their workers but harmful overall. The two usually go hand in hand, since the attitude of being considerate of one's employees often extends to being considerate of the general population as well, but I'm sure you could find some exceptions.

It's kind of to be expected. At least half of the egg is white chocolate (which has no cocoa mass at all), and the other half isn't exactly dark. That's just a matter of presenting that in a way that makes it seem healthier (given the fairly widespread perception that milk=healthy and chocolate=unhealthy, though it's very much the sugar that's added to chocolate products that's unhealthy and not the chocolate itself) instead of trying to hide it.

I mostly drink water through the day anyway (sometimes a glass of juice with breakfast, but not so often that I couldn't give that up), so that would end up changing very little on the drinks end. The food, however, would be pretty bothersome, particularly where it would mean I couldn't schedule anything else between 7 and 8 and eating out in any capacity could be pretty dangerous (if my order gets held up such that I can't finish eating everything by 8). It would be doable, once I got used to eating that much at once and fasting the rest of the day, but probably too unenjoyable to actually go through with it.

Odyssey is a fantastic time. Skyward Sword vs Link's Awakening is a tricky comparison because you're comparing a 3D Zelda to a 2D one, and that generally makes for fairly different experiences.

Revelation34 posted...
I don't know anything about Skyward Sword.

It's probably one of the most hit-or-miss games in the series. A lot of people really hated it, others really liked it. Part of that is the motion controls, which just didn't work for a lot of people (I've seen the theory that some of the WMP's that were bundled with the game when it launched were defective, but I haven't seen that confirmed), but beyond that, people panned the lack of a proper overworld, the rather annoying unskippable tutorials (dunno if that's been fixed in the remake), the fact that regions get revisited instead of, and a few other bothersome quirks. On the other hand, though, it's got some of the more interesting dungeons, puzzles, and bosses in the series, the upgrade system for items is pretty nifty, and the story is one of the better ones in the series. I liked it, but your mileage may vary.

Majora's Mask (the time limit sucks, no matter how you slice it)

The time limit is the basis for all of the incredible world- and character-building that makes MM so awesome. The best thing about it is seeing how all of the various characters and their interactions develop in response to the impending apocalypse, and experiencing that relies on having the apocalypse actually happen enough times to see how everyone reacts and/or try different things to help them come to terms with it. The time limit is necessary for that, and given that it's really not restrictive enough to make finishing the game a problem (especially with the Inverted SoT), I'm quite happy for the tradeoff.

That's not to say that MM doesn't have its flaws (the saving system is a big one, though the 3DS remake addressed part of that issue), but the time limit very much is not one of them.

The biggest risk is that trying to stop a shoplifter leads to a confrontation and someone gets injured or killed.

Pretty much. Specifically, if the employee that tries to stop them is injured, the workplace will be liable for that unless they have specific policies and measures in place to avoid that risk (namely, telling workers not to confront shoplifters so any efforts to do so are entirely the employee's decision and therefore responsibility). In rare cases, they'll employ security that has their own insurance to cover that possibility, but most of the time, they stand to lose far more by endangering the employee than by recovering relatively low-value products.

Generally speaking, major corporations won't bother dealing with a relatively small amount of shoplifting because doing so would cost more than they're losing. Repeat offenders may be banned from the store, but preventing it from happening entails having dedicated security staff that are allowed to accost shoplifters, and that's pretty expensive (mostly for the insurance involved) and usually won't actually save the company that much.

Don't feel like making a topic for this but does @adjl or anyone have a good fudge recipe?

Thinking of making some penuche fudge but I might go with plain ol' fudge

Fudge is one of those things I've been meaning to take a proper stab at for a while, but I never seem to get around to it. The one batch I've tried seized up before I got it into the pan and ended up with a weirdly gummy texture to it, which I think means I didn't get it hot enough. I should really try again.

Mad_Max posted...
Is it that easy? I remember my great aunt using a candy thermometer, which I don't have, but I was gonna sorta wing it anyway

There are kind of two approaches to fudge. That's the easy way, which produces a perfectly serviceable result no matter how many snobs might tell you it's "wrong." The hard way involves boiling the mixture to a certain temperature to change how the sugar behaves, then letting it cool to a certain temperature without disturbing it, stirring it vigorously to force the sugar to crystallize while making sure those crystals are small enough to give a smooth texture (a similar principle to how ice cream is made), then letting it set the rest of the way. Many would say that gives a better product, but there's much less room for error.

If you want to try the hard way but don't have a candy thermometer, an instant-read meat thermometer will do the job just as well, provided it can read temperatures up to 250F or so (you only actually need 230-240). Just be very careful not to touch any of it. As obvious as that seems, the mixture's going to be well above boiling and has a nasty habit of sticking to whatever it hits (this is true of all candy-making, though fudge is very much on the low end, temperature-wise), plus it's thick enough that it may end up bubbling unpredictably, so holding your hand close enough to it to use a meat thermometer can be a little risky.

Only ~0.5-0.7% of the population is trans. Even if we very generously assume that ten times that many are closeted, that'd still only account for 5% of men, and I'm pretty sure more than 5% of men stand up for women from time to time.

Now, I could believe that a disproportionate number of men defending women are trans, but certainly not to enough of an extent as to turn 0.5% into 90%.

Alright, so this story is terribly retold and very confusing. I had to look it up for myself.

The kid who died is named Valdez. Valdez was buying drugs, probably just weed, from the defendant. He tried to run without paying. Defendant chased and a struggle ensued. According to the defendants lawyer, Valdez was on the wrestling team, and the defendant is under 100 pounds. Valdez got the upper hand, mounted the defendant, and started slamming the defendants head into the ground (this is, again, according to the lawyer). Defendant reach for a utility knife he had on his person, a struggle for the knife occured, and Valdez was stabbed multiple times in the chest. Died later in hospital.

Alright, that's the unbiased gist.

If this account of events is accurate, this verdict seems reasonable. The altercation resulting in the dude's death was very much a consequence of illegal activities (whether dealing weed should be illegal or not, since that's a separate discussion), but nothing a minor should necessarily be seeing jail time over. The actual stabbing can be at least kind of called self defense, and there's definitely no case for murder 1.
