But they didn't let the government take total control of any of those things. Just an appropriate, limited level of control in specific situations where failing to follow those instructions put others at significant risk.

What is it with the anti-vaxx loonies exaggerating the situation so badly? "Wear a mask" is not "total control over how you should dress," no matter how melodramatically you sigh when you're told to wear one.

It's not really a matter of "looking for it" in a specific sense. Any time anyone sequences the genome of a Covid sample, they're looking for any variations (IIRC, the genome is around 54,000 bp, so it's very easy to analyze for any changes from the established norm), not just for ones that have already been identified. If it's more likely than others to cause asymptomatic infections, that would make it less likely to be caught by such sequencing efforts (by simple virtue of the fact that asymptomatic cases so often go completely undetected, let alone being detected and sequenced), but it's unlikely that it's a matter of "we didn't know to look for it before so we didn't see it" because sequencing makes note of all variations.

They came out a little spongy but they taste good. Recipe called for veg oil but I substituted yogurt that might be why they're spongy @adjl might know better

We don't typically have veggie oil in the house. Should've used coconut oil maybe... Or ghee. Not sure. I used yogurt specifically to avoid using something that might alter the taste too much

Not sure if yogurt would make them spongy, necessarily, but yogurt's got a lot of properties that mean it's not a great substitute for veggie oil. It's thicker, it's got significant protein content of its own (which could cause the sponginess), it's relatively acidic (which can interfere with chemical leavening and also cause sponginess)... Ghee (or even just melted butter) would probably have been a better option. It's not as neutral as veggie oil, but most baked goods will benefit from a bit of butter flavour. That would also end up altering the texture a bit (as would coconut oil) because it's solid at room temperature, but that isn't the end of the world.

he should be prosecuted. We are talking about not one Xbox but hundreds of packages and property damage. I wonder if a case for theft could be made as he effectively stole the merchandise from either the senders or the recipients. The fact he chose to dump and destroy them rather than keep the value doesnt change the fact that when he intentionally deprived one or the other parties of their either stole or attempted to steal from them.

The structure for that liability, however, doesn't involve personally suing him or prosecuting him. It involves Fed Ex paying to replace whatever needs replacement, then passing that cost on to the driver if they deem it worth the hassle (which they likely won't, since this is a drop in the bucket for their overall revenue, would be insured and likely won't result in an increase in their insurance rates, and because the guy probably doesn't have the money to pay them back).

Alternatively, I can say that everyone should follow the recommended booster schedule and say that everyone that hasn't been vaccinated yet should get the shot (medical exemptions aside). Why choose?

If there are limited resources used to upgrade stuff, you should always include more information in order to allow the player to decide how to distribute those resources (example 2). If upgrades happen on a per item basis, either is fine and you should go with whatever you prefer.

Exactly this. It's extremely frustrating to commit limited resources to upgrading something only to find out that it doesn't end up being worthwhile in the end. If that's how a system works, I tend to end up looking the items up on the game's wiki to figure out what the long-term goal is and better evaluate the decision, which isn't ideal.

If there are a lot of tiers, having all of them displayed at once may be overwhelming, so there's a case to be made there for presenting a simplified version, but it's still generally good to make sure the players have the information needed to decide what they want. In that case, if the stat gains are linear (as they seem to be here), you can do something like saying "+1 dmg, +2 acc per level" and include a list of breakpoints after which new stats get introduced, e.g. "Lvl 3: +2 luck, +1 per level." If you're only got three levels, though, that should be fine.

What's your control population for determining that that can be attributed to God? Are Christians less likely to die to influenza than the control population? What other variables have you accounted for in making that comparison?

If we're going to treat God as a viable protective measure, you first need to be able to demonstrate that protection. What you're doing is attributing the status quo to God (which also means blaming God for hundreds of thousands of flu deaths every year, whether you're attributing that to malice or impotence), which indicates absolutely nothing about the effectiveness of other measures.

Furthermore, why are you presenting this as a dichotomy? Can you not rely on whatever unquantified protection God provides and reduce that by a further 40% with a flu shot for even better results? Or is there some evidence showing that getting a flu shot demonstrates such a lack of faith in God that he revokes his existing protection and people's outcomes become worse (hint: there isn't).

There's a case for that, but it doesn't sound like that's what he's asking for. He's asking for the guy who dumped the packages to be prosecuted for doing so in what seems to be a desire for baseless revenge. The actual way to handle any of this would be to pursue replacements from FedEx, who can in turn sue the guy for whatever that ends up costing.

Eh, I'm inclined to hold off until the recommendation does actually change. I'll be hitting the 6 month mark in January, so it's not likely to make a huge difference either way, but the data coming in from higher-risk people that are getting their boosters will make for a more robust recommendation.

The basic gist is that doing awesome things doesn't mean people aren't going to hold you accountable for doing bad things later. It's an extreme example to demonstrate that principle, but it works, and the analogy holds up well enough in this scenario as well.

I especially like the "it was developed too fast" as though we haven't now reached the 2-year time frame that is pretty normal for vaccine development, given that development started on these vaccines pretty much as soon as it became apparent that Covid was a problem in December 2019. Even without pointing out that accelerating development process didn't involve cutting corners, the current timeline lines up with a normal one, plus has several orders of magnitude more participants than any clinical trial in history. There's no longer any reason at all to be concerned about the vaccine being "rushed," people are just clinging so desperately to that excuse that they've ignored the passage of time.

Achieving a run like that requires the player to spend more time with the game than the vast majority of regular players ever will. It's not like he looked up how to do this glitch, acquired a copy of the game, executed it in 51 seconds, then said "well that was fun, time to move on to the next game." That run was the product of extensive study, experimentation, and practice to optimize it as perfectly as he possibly could (plus a bit of luck).

Presumably, he means breaking games to the point that they're unrecognizable as the original gameplay experience, purely for the sake of reaching some arbitrary "finish" faster than anyone else. I can understand that, given that it's so far divorced from regular players' understanding of the game, but I also see why many people do enjoy dismantling games like this. It's conceptually similar taking a toy apart to see how it works instead of just playing with it, only gamifying that process with rules and goals and competition to make it more entertaining and foster a community around it.

If you're reasonably conservative with your investments, you can all but guarantee that you'll see a net gain in the long run, even if you lose some money here and there. I don't think anyone's talking about going out and buying $520k in bitcoin and hoping for the best; a 5-8% return is generally reliable enough to be the basis for a long-term financial plan (and if it isn't, the market's pretty screwed and we've got bigger issues to worry about than a hypothetical free money prize).

Yeah, if there's no adjustment for inflation, this is an easy choice. By that 14-year equivalency point, that $100 will be worth notably less than the $10k plan would have been , given that the $10k plan can be invested to counteract inflation (even more reliably than investing it with the intent of turning a small profit).

I always see TAS as an exercise in theoretical optimization. It doesn't require the same dexterity that actually executing the run manually would, no, but it can be interesting to see the strategic process that goes into it, and even using tools, there's usually plenty of skill that goes into optimizing it (optimizations that sometimes aren't applicable to manual runs, so it's not just a matter of emulating that). Of course, they should be counted separately, but they are, so that's not a problem.

I hadn't realized just how much the back is involved in jumping until I went to a trampoline park a few years ago. I did gymnastics for many years as a kid, so I had lots of exposure to the trampoline there, but because I worked up to that gradually I never really noticed which muscles were used. Fast forward a decade or so to me trying to jump on a trampoline the same way I did when I was actually in gymnastics, and suddenly my back's like "whoa man what are you doing." Thinking about it, it makes sense that the core would be heavily involved because of how much stabilization is needed, but it still took some getting used to, especially where I've done enough biking since then that my legs were still fully capable of jumping with the same power I used to.

If something does go wrong, it's easy enough to remedy. You're just taking a picture of the cheque, so you'll still have it and can bring it into the bank to correct any issues that might arise. Just make sure you hang on to your cheques for a few weeks after depositing them, and you should be fine.

Given that that announcement and article say absolutely nothing about what the game will even be, it's pretty impossible to make any guesses as to whether or not it'll be good. The extreme obfuscation, heavy use of buzzwords, and insistence that it's going to revolutionize the industry, however, lead me to think not. Those aren't things that people with a genuinely fun game idea have to rely on.

I took to using my bank's app once Covid hit. Before that, I'd stop by an ATM to cash my cheques, but once things locked down, it was much rarer for me to be in the neighbourhood of one and it just became a better idea to use the app. It's pretty handy, though I don't get physical cheques anymore.
