How would the sun affect DNA?

When DNA is exposed to UV radiation, adjacent thymine molecules (the "T" of the "ACGT" used to refer to nucleotide bases) undergo what's called a dimerization reaction, linking them together more or less irreversibly (at least, so stably that they won't spontaneously repair) in a manner that causes the DNA strand to bend and become unreadable in that section. Cells are generally pretty good at detecting these dimers and repairing them (which entails chopping out the affected section and rewriting it), but any time DNA needs to be repaired, there's a chance that the repair ends up making a mistake and introducing a mutation into the genome.

If the damage is too extensive, the repair mechanisms may also be unable to fix it, which normally causes the cell to kill itself (apoptosis). If the mechanisms for detecting that are also broken, though, the cell will continue to replicate with its damaged genome, which can result in cancer.

Now, is there any basis for thinking that humanity's genome was once "perfect" and increased UV radiation has single-handedly spoiled that such that we can no longer live for centuries? No. There's absolutely no archaeological evidence to suggest that humans have ever lived appreciably longer than they do now (quite the contrary, in fact), nor is UV radiation the only reason humanity's genome has changed over time. The concept of "perfect genes" has always been ridiculous, given that fitness is so overwhelmingly dependent on one's environment and a the only way to actually maintain "perfection" (even with all possible sources of mutation eliminated) would be for everyone to be perfect clones of each other (since sexual recombination between differing genomes is inevitably going to result in deleterious combinations of alleles that were not present in their parents).

As much as it's good to avoid jumping to conclusions, I don't think there's much chance that he isn't guilty. Short of "I had a stroke and passed out at the wheel," there isn't much you can say to claim innocence after driving through a crowd of people and killing several. The question is going to boil down to the nuances of how premeditated it was, but whether he's got six counts of murder 1 or six counts of vehicular manslaughter, I think it's a given that he's going to be spending the rest of his life in prison.

That might actually be harder to make stick. I'm surprised they went with Murder 1 when the number and severity of any other homicide charges would have functionally guaranteed the same sentence without needing to prove any sort of premeditation. Regardless, I don't see that it's particularly likely that he gets off with anything less than life, so I still don't think there's much to debate here.

Presumably, guilty of aggravated assault/attempted murder for the stabbing, two counts (unless the number has changed) of dangerous driving causing death, a few more counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and a bonus charge of driving with an expired licence. Recommend life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years, what he'll actually end up with will depend on what else comes out about his life between now and the sentencing.

As unusual as this event was, there's really not much to debate. It's a pretty cut-and-dry case with little question of guilt and no particular need to explore the motives further.

The GBA Monster Rancher games were notorious for their batteries burning out because of the nature of the MR games where you'd reload on failures which put a strain on the battery.

MRDS (which didn't have this as an issue, but repeated saves damage the cart) got around this by punishing you for saving/reloading

That also kind of came up with PSO. If you were farming rare versions of enemies (which happened a lot), a common strategy was to repeatedly teleport back and forth between the "town" and the field, since any enemies that had spawned could reload as a rare variant. In extreme cases, though, the repeated loading of the same area resulted in people's discs being burned to the point of being unreadable.

I remember back during the days of PSO, because the game was a bit buggy, there was an ever-present threat of encountering FSOD - the frozen screen of death. Most of the time, that was just annoying and you'd just have to restart the game and lose all your progress since the last save, but if it happened during a save, it could corrupt the entire memory card. Worse, there were various ways you could trigger an FSOD for other players during online play, so that was a constant fear, especially given how many thousands of hours it took to get anywhere in that game. Fortunately, that was just the memory card, not the entire system.

Realistically, nobody's going to care unless you've already got their attention. If you had an existing following on Youtube, Twitch, Instagram, or a similar service, posting a video tour of your collection on the corresponding platform would pique some of your followers' interests. Start a Youtube channel or whatever just to show it off, however, and you shouldn't expect anyone to bother checking it out, especially if it ends up taking multiple videos to wade through it all. The only way you're going to get anyone caring at all is if you join a collecting community and post your collection on their forums.

They've done everything they reasonably could to prevent this from happening, including firing the employee as soon as she showed a propensity for giving customers what they deserve. Going after the employee would be justifiable, specifically filing assault charges, but obviously suing a 16-year-old girl isn't going to be very lucrative.

I feel like that claim about it being the deadliest year can't possibly be right, given the very long history of violence and constant danger that was so much more prevalent even *twenty* years ago, without even getting to the 60s and 70s where those murders often weren't even investigated and law enforcement often actively participated in violence towards the LGBT community.

A quick bit of digging found this:
https://www.hrc.org/resources/fatal-violence-against-the-transgender-and-gender-non-conforming-community-in-2021

Looks like the HRC has only been specifically tracking trans murders since 2013, so that wouldn't capture more historical data. It's likely that data doesn't actually exist, given that even this data is likely underreported even with strong efforts to ensure as many instances of anti-trans violence are identified as possible.

That said, the data they provide indicates that the number averaged between 20 and 25 from 2015 to 2019. 2020 saw 44 such murders, 2021 has already seen 47, almost double the average of the previous 5 years. Two data points don't necessarily indicate a trend, and that may be partially explained by the uptick in domestic violence seen due to pandemic isolation over the last two years, but that's also coincided with increasingly aggressive anti-trans rhetoric leading up to the 2020 election (since restricting trans rights is apparently a major election platform), on which the right has doubled down since losing.

It may not be as bad as when police were literally forming death squads to hunt down trans people (though we'll never know the actual figures involved in that), but that doesn't mean there isn't a deeply alarming trend that a whole lot of very bad people seem far too excited about. That shouldn't be ignored, and it certainly shouldn't be accepted just because it's "not as bad as it used to be."

PeterPumpknhead posted...
I dont its a coincidence that his public criticism of an already vulnerable group is leading to a real increase in violence against trans people

It's fairly unlikely that Chapelle has had an appreciable impact on the uptick in violence. His comments are tone deaf and insensitive given how vulnerable their subject population is, and represent a broader culture of ignorance (voluntary or otherwise) of trans people's plight. but I wouldn't specifically blame him for violence. He's just part of the problem (for what he can and should be held accountable), not a root cause of it.

That said, I guess some people might leave their license in their car (especially an expired one) instead of carrying it on their person, so this could be less a matter of "he dropped his license as he fled" and more "he forgot that his license was somewhere in the car that he left behind." Realistically, there'd also be a registration and proof of insurance in there, so it's not like the license is the only possible indicator of his identity.

And in terms of impact, family gatherings are going to have a MUCH larger effect than Black Friday sales.

This, however, is probably true. Black Friday sales will draw more people, but they'll be in larger, better-ventilated spaces for less time where they don't spend long in close quarters with any given person (outside of those that they line up in front of/behind, which will cap at 4 people total), and many of those people will be masked (depending on the area). Family gatherings will be almost completely maskless and involve spending several hours in close contact with people.

Of course, the fact that family gatherings will be happening right before Black Friday sales means the two effects will likely end up combining to be even worse than they might otherwise be on their own. But hey, at least people have the freedom to buy a bunch of discount stuff they don't need and have a big family dinner on the arbitrary day they want. Because apparently that's what's important.

Also: look at how Sunny chooses not to provide evidence or answers, but rather call everyone else incorrect. This gives me deja vu.

Is it really deja vu if you can conclusively remember that this is just exactly what's happened every other time he's disagreed with people?

That's so stupid though, ceos aren't why people buy goods/services.

They are, however, why companies shift their focus away from producing quality games and into producing addictive "live services" with predatory monetization schemes woven throughout them to exploit whatever vulnerable people they can sink their teeth into. And *that* is what's made Activision so many buttloads of money.

Actually, nothing you said was a response to what you quoted.

"I hope they refund his tuition."
"There's no basis for a refund because X."

That's one of only two possible broad responses to what I quoted (the other being "I agree"). What on earth are you talking about?

I still hope they refund his tuition regardless of policy.

Why would they go against their own policies to refund money they rather like having to somebody that deliberately antagonized them to the point where police needed to be involved? While we're at it, we might as well hope that the next time he enters his home, he finds a magical cookie machine there that dispenses a limitless supply of delicious fresh cookies on demand.
