I agree that the execution isn't particularly great but this is probably the most interesting story Metroid's had yet (Dread excluded because I haven't played it yet). It has legitimate twists and real intrigue.

I was just thinking that, about how the whole fusion reveal kind of doesn't really have the full impact it should on its own imo unless you play other M and learn exactly who Adam was.

You can also read the Metroid manga, which should still be available for free online! That will give you the same information that Other M would and is arguably a better experience.

Honestly Other M is in a weird place canon-wise, because it both retcons a few things and pseudo-retells Fusion despite immediately preceding it in the timeline.

There's loads of depth in Abyss. There are so many layers to the game's world, plot, and characters that are seriously lacking in Vesperia. Vesperia felt very one-dimensional, whereas Abyss had complex relationships, a plethora of lore, developed villains, and a fleshed-out world.

I'm gonna be honest, I had no idea you meant story depth and assumed you meant gameplay depth.

I kinda can't fathom your position here so I'll just agree to disagree.

Depth is not something I expect when I play a Tales game (and I definitely didn't notice any in Abyss or Symphonia either) if that helps explain it

Huge ups and downs, and bizarre pacing. I liked the beginning (but it's kinda slow) and the ending (but it felt rushed). All the stuff in the middle with Mr. Negative and then Sable was hard to care about. I really liked this game and was close to really liking its story too, but the more I think about it the lower my opinion on it gets. The characters are legit great, at least.

My family went super overboard this year... Honestly one of the best Christmases I can remember, at least since I was a kid.

I was super disappointed when rescuing Jeanne from Hell was only a small part of the game and then the rest was about Bayonetta's lame dad. Still had plenty of good moments, though.

What an utterly bizarre list.

I'm another HoD apologist. I think the game plays pretty well - like the controls and movement and stuff just feel good to me, probably even more so than AoS.

On the other hand I've never cared much for CotM. There's clearly something good there beneath the surface but it really needs a remake to fix the... everything... that's wrong with it.

AoS is good but I played it after DoS so it always felt a little lackluster in comparison.

Phoenotopia: Awakening (Switch)

This is a very high quality Zelda 2-like. The game is huge -- there's an achievement for getting to the last save point in under 4 hours, but a normal playthrough, even if you avoid all the sidequests, is probably closer to 25-30 hours? It's long.

And then the side content just seems to stretch on to infinity. I keep running into new optional areas and quests and secrets, even at 40+ hours of playtime. It kind of reminds me of Hollow Knight, in that way.

It also reminds me of Hollow Knight because it's pretty hard, especially early on. The difficulty is pretty granular though so if you're having trouble you can change certain aspects, from making basic attacks not cost stamina, to allowing you to use food from the menu instead of being forced to eat it in real-time during battle, to making the fishing minigame not screw with your controls. It's a nice approach to difficulty settings, though I've only used the one that was on by default (the food one, and frankly I need it).

I will say that the game's story, while interesting, feels very incomplete, and considering I never hear anyone talk about this game I doubt it's getting a sequel. Oh well.

I knew I should have gone with Naphtali for my joke, I had a feeling there were a couple Zebuluns out there.

Hotel Dusk is pretty good, at least in terms of the characters and story.

I didn't think Devil Survivor was all that (I played the DS original version though). The difficulty is all over the place and it felt very obtuse on how to actually pursue certain endings. Had to force myself to even finish it once. (I'd also call the story really bad but I think I just don't like SMT stories in general.)

I guess that might seem high but this game's plot is legit great. The first 10 chapters are fairly standard but after that it just goes off the rails in the best way. The characters and writing are also top notch. This is probably the best story Nintendo's ever put out.

I'll say 'they' but I do think it was horrible branding that legitimately confuses some neutral people. It wouldn't have changed anything for the bigots, but overall it would've been better to just invent a new word.

I mean... people tried! There are gender neutral neopronouns that date back to the 1800s*. But they didn't enter regular use while "they" did, which is just a linguistic thing, there's not really any way to control how language incorporates new words.

*I had to fact check myself on this because I was like "they're older than people think, I want to say... 1970s" and then checked and NOPE "ze" is from 1864. That's as old as words like "homosexuality" and "girlfriend"!

The one response I've found that seems to convert well-intentioned neutral people is to bring up that nobody uses "thou" anymore, we all just use the singular "you". No idea why this is more convincing than a 600-year history of using the singular "they" but in my experience it definitely is.

I'm going to say one of those moves... I'm glad it's gone. Karate Chop fucking ended ended the Nuzlocke run I was playing. It only failed to crit once, and literally ripped my entire team to shreds. I didn't even mean to type ended twice there, but that's how fucking hard it was hitting me. Even pogeys that resisted Fighting type only lasted two(ish) hits. Potions essentially read as "throw this away to see the opponent crit an additional time."

tbh I would absolutely say that you should phrase this more as "hey man, some assholes will judge you not on your professional skills or accomplishments, but on your irrelevant appearance not meeting their arbitrary standards, so be aware of that before getting a body modification"

ze/zir (or xe/xir, as far as I know they're pronounced the same) is probably the most common neopronoun, if I had to guess

Mind you, none are very common so it's not surprising you wouldn't recognize it

Kinda sad we didn't get the comedy option where all electronic voting is declared invalid but that just increases Biden's lead

I feel like it's almost certainly going to get more common moving forward, not less, so regardless of how stupid it is you may want to make your peace with it
