Just making a hyperbolic post. I only played like 3 games in 2021, an AAA game (BDSP), an A a game (Trails of Cold Steel 4) and an indie game (Loop Hero). Out of those, the only soulless game was the AAA game. I'm just not widely interested in games anymore.
it's hard to suggest anything without knowing what you're looking for, but I guess I can't resist trying; unless they're invalidated by your tastes, almost everyone who likes gaming should play the following:

Morrowind
Might and Magic games (3-10)
Age of Wonders games (1, 2, Shadow Magic, 3, and Planetfall)
Crashlands
Rayman Origins
Hotline Miami 1 & 2
Dark Souls 1-3 and Sekiro (and BB/DeS if possible)
Furi
Factorio
Kerbal Space Program
Creeper World games (1-4 and also Particle Fleet)
Doom games (1-3, 64, 2016, Eternal)
Slay the Spire
Zachtronics games (esp. Shenzhen I/O, Opus Magnum, and Exapunks, and esp. printing out the supplementary documents)
Death Road to Canada
(I think you've already played Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1)
System Shock 2
Deus Ex 1
Thief 1
Borderlands 2
maybe Avernum but only if you want a hardcore crpg
Dishonored 1

The virus developed a resistance due to the presence of a vaccine not from the lack of presence
what do you mean by "develop"? the virus will "develop" resistance to anything (anything possible) randomly, it just won't catch without the selection pressure.

using the slotmachine analogy, the virus thriving among unvaccinated populations are pulls on the slot machine arm (each spawning virus is a pull), and the presence of the vaccine is the "winning combination". if the virus is not thriving somewhere, then there are greatly reduced numbers of "plays"; if there is no vaccine then there is no "winning combination", and even if that combination is found it just doesn't take hold.

you need both things for it to work: thriving in one population while also being exposed to the vaccinated. we basically created this perfect situation by vaccinating most but not all of the world.

adjl posted...
62%, and even that's a relatively recent development. For quite a while it was stagnating slightly over 50.
k I was just doing total doses / 2 / pop, but I guess there are a lot of booster shots. ~21% are triple dosed and ~74% are (at least) single dosed. actually the way they word it sure makes it confusing... the actual distribution is:

26% unvaccinated
12% 1 dosed
41% 2 dosed
21% 3 dosed

(I don't know if this takes into account that J&J only needs 1 dose)

(incidentally Johns Hopkins is reporting over 2 trillion doses administered world-wide??? that has to be a mistake right? that's an average of 250 per person world-wide?)

adjl posted...
overall case rates would be lower, resulting in fewer total variants
maybe, but where? the variants are not emerging from USA afaik. they emerged from like India and South Africa or something, and then came to USA.

I think you would really have to block international travel to not end up where we are. even if USA was fully vaxed, things would not be different. there are countries like Isreal that were highly vaccinated almost right away but it doesn't matter if the virus is still running rampant somewhere else and travel is not restricted.

I don't see that it is possible for the world to have been sufficiently vaccinated fast enough to prevent this. this is the inevitable outcome. all we can do is continue trying not to spread it, try to maximize vaccination rates, lockdown if/when the health system starts to reach capacity. unless you have nearly every person in the world cooperating, which cannot happen, there is no ending this.

thinks vaccine resistance formed in the unvaccinated
there's a larger chance of it forming in the unvaccinated. it is then selected for by the vaccinated. it takes both of these things: a place for the virus to roam free + a selection pressure.

personally I see this as inevitable though. the vaccine is just not effective enough. people can complain about the unvaccinated, but it's not like we can just achieve absolutely 100% vaccination rates. it's always going to be asymptotic. USA has something like over 76% vaccination rate. and then, the vaccine resistant strains are not emerging from USA anyway as far as I know. it was not ever possible to vaccinate the planet in less than a year. and incomplete vaccination will inevitably result in vaccine resistant strains. I don't see how things could be different.

I dunno, TNG has hand-held weapons that can vaporize buildings; they just aren't often used at maximum settings. And that's hand-held, the ship phasers can destroy surface targets with pin-point accuracy pretty-much effortlessly, and can basically reduce the surface of a planet to melted rock. And photon torpedos are even more devastating than that. And then their shields are good enough to defend against weapons of that strength.

basically in star trek you have nigh-pacifists with incredibly powerful tech, so they rarely make use of it. in star wars you have relatively weak tech, but it's a constant struggle and everyone is mustering as much advantage as they can out of the tech that is available (and trying to build particularly devastating weapons to gain the most advantage).

it's kind of like comparing superman to ironman or something like that. (or even just DC vs Marvel generally). one is optimistic and idealized, giving extremely powerful but restrained results; the other is pessimistic, with underwhelming strength, but then used without restraint.

it sounds like you have it backwards. GOP is republican, right? having read the book more than a few times I really enjoyed the movie. it's interesting though that while it mentions a lot of the concepts in the book, it doesn't really flesh them out. I suspect this may make for a much more interesting experience if you already know the story than if you don't.

also, while everyone seems to like the baron in the new one, I thought he was way underused. he's nice and creepy and all, but he only occasionally appears and has like one or two lines at a time. he's barely a character and you almost get no exposure to the harkonnens at all. and they focused on making them creepily alien rather than sickeningly decadent, which I don't mind too much, I just wish they had more development. but then the movie was extremely long already (though I could have watched it for 6+ hours easily.)

one thing I really liked was the feeling of dryness you get from the desert. when they show sand, it doesn't feel like beach sand, it looks course and dry as heck, and when there's moisture anywhere it sticks out like a sore thumb in the extremely dry environment.

To be fair, there is a good reason for that. ctrl+c is the shortcut to kill a process (end task in Windows). And that dates back farther then ctrl+c being "Copy to clipboard".
I was gonna say this but I can't remember if that's what it does in Linux or not.

also until recently, windows command prompt had its own issues, actually maybe related to the ctrl-c is copy issue. an administrative command prompt would for some reason not accept ctrl-c to terminate, so if you did something like setup a continuous ping (ping -t) you would not be able to stop it. (though it would still print out the stats when you hit it which I think I now realize must just be a part of ping.exe to listen for ctrl-c and print stats just before dying.)

instead of ctrl-c is copy, there's the mark and copy system instead (which is actually more useful anyways), but it also varies depending on which command prompt you're using.

I think they have smoothed this all out in Windows 10 now; this all mostly applied to XP

Haha, I definitely don't resent that you didn't do more, if that's what you're getting at. I liked seeing how you worked with it. Up until that point I had never gotten any feedback on anything I'd written, so the fact that you didn't call it a rat's nest gave me some confidence.
my plan had been to go through it once and clean up minor things as I went, to get an understanding of the whole thing. (I got half way through that). once I started to grasp it as a whole, then I could try to do some larger scale refactorings and then I could show you some ways of organizing things that you might not know. (basically it would be a great way to share some knowledge, if I could have gotten that far).

it was also a good way to start learning git more too though I guess. these days I can't believe I ever used mercurial and consider it vastly inferior to git. mercurial is slow and messes up all the time. git is rock solid in comparison, WAY faster, and has a really intuitive branch model.

but yeah, I got side-tracked by writing a KSP launch window calculator and schedule tracker which enabled me to reliably go interplanetary in KSP for the first time. but even that I find hard to work on outside of vacation time when I already am coding all day at work. (I shouldn't though... I think it's more that I don't have the best setup at home for coding. at work I have a much better desk and keyboard and chair and a bit faster PC. so I find it surprisingly draining to code at home).

Even if it doesn't work out, this should be enough to get me in the right direction of never working in a grocery store again. My current boss will make sure he gets me into his employer if it goes downhill. I remember the Google code links you sent me that one time, and I appreciate that. At that same time I was getting involved with this startup.
right ok. it's not super interesting sounding to me (data analysis etc), but glad it's going well for you.

the google thing, it just made sense to share with you.

I still wish I had spent some more time working with your code, I guess I am just already at the limit of what I can accomplish time and energy -wise these days.

KSP and/or Infinifactory

KSP is only $11 and is among the best games ever made; it does have 2 DLCs too though

Infinifactory is a really good complicated puzzle game but won't have tons of replay value

yes, "flattening the curve" or whatever is pretty important. even though it is just prolonging the problem, the alternative would be mass death, overflowing the health system as well as corpse disposal. during the spanish flu, your family member(s) would die and there'd be no where to send the bodies. morgues were at many times capacity, there weren't enough coffins, etc.
