not just cars but also gasoline

recommended channel on this topic that I like just subscribed to today: https://www.youtube.com/c/NotJustBikes

he's a bit overly anti-car and pro-bicycle (or anything that isn't a car), but the picture you get from it is, yes, NA infrastructure heavily and needlessly favours cars over basically everything else, and in fact NA is woefully behind in this area to an embarrassing degree.

(Factorio may not technically count since 1.0 final release was Aug 2020, despite the game having been around since 2016. I don't know what I would replace it with though, DS2 or 3 I guess. Nothing really comes close to those three games.)

I get great quads from doing box squats, but I always found bikes work out my hammies more
I did mean a recumbent bike not sure if that makes a difference. what I find annoying though is how you only use a small part of your body. trying to maintain a high heart rate, meanwhile your legs are dying but your arms and torso are doing nothing; I find it very frustrating.

Lokarin posted...
so screw y'all free weights
what we should be asking here is, what is your goal?

ideally you should have free weights plus some form of cardio (rowing machine, r. bike, etc.)

if your goal is to lose and/or maintain weight, you particularly need the cardio
if your goal is to gain and/or maintain muscle, you particularly need the free weights

but really both of those complement each other and you should have access to both

I don't know why you don't like weights

(one thing I experimented with a few years ago before I moved (and haven't had proper space for an exercise room since) is using weights for cardio. rather than working the muscle, use lighter weights and do movements faster. this seemed very effective but I didn't do it very long before I moved.)

a rowing machine is what I would recommend. it spreads the workout to more of your body, and they take up less space.

a bike definitely works, but it targets the heck out of your quadriceps so hope you like your quads being in agony. (though not 100% sure how much better a rowing machine is in that sense.)

also the one I have has an issue where the distance adjustment constantly extends as you use it, regardless how much you tighten it, so the pedals slowly get further and further away as you pedal.

not trying to be sarcastic, but maybe buy better shoes? I had 5+ year old nike walking shoes, and I replaced them with some cheap Walmart brand shoes. a year or so later I put on my "garbage" old nikes to mow the lawn with and realized they were infinitely more comfortable and snug than my "new" cheap shoes. almost immediately got some new nikes which are not even that much more expensive.

(though I do notice the nike "air" part seems to make them particularly squeeky shoes after a fairly short time.)

chelsea_wtf posted...
thats why its so important to have an AbstractConditionFactory to create a variety of different IBooleanHandlers so that your conditional handling logic can be dependency-injected instead of hardcoded. just having an if statement in your business logic is basically two different unconditional jumps combined into a conditional jump
the right approach can be to put the logic from each of the if blocks into their own classes and simply call a method on the abstract class or interface.

this comes up a lot when for example switching on enum types. IMO enums are generally an anti-pattern since they don't allow for any polymorphism or code reuse and you end up with these "logic varies with value" areas all over the place when they should be in that type itself instead.

Then your anti-money goes UP in value!!!
that's interesting. it seems true that if you had run-away inflation, then the $ value of your debt would remain static and "should" be easier to pay off. I guess it's the opposite problem: the debtors lose money since the value of what they're owed drops.

it almost just translates to: if you know that inflation is coming, then buy now while your money still has value.

Lokarin posted...
After 100% inflation your debt will pay itself off!
I think it would be after %. 100% would just be double (or half). once money has absolute zero value (% inflation) then so does your debt have zero value. but that can't happen.

but yeah, there seems to be some truth to the debt thing though there's probably a catch somewhere that I don't know about; interest rates for example.

I wondered about this. I always expect Hershey to be great, since it's a classic American chocolate company, but usually if not always it's terrible instead. Cadbury is so much better.

(interesting... in 1988 Hershey acquired the rights to manufacture Cadbury products in USA, which is something people complain about saying that Hershey products are inferior. but in Canada, Cadbury Canada manufactures or imports Cadbury products. so it's possible Americans here might not notice a difference between the two.)

it's easy to steamroll the game, but the game is setup so that steamrolling makes you evil. and the mechanics are not well explained, only hinted at; and you have to stumble upon all of the secrets. but yes once you know what you're doing you can steamroll while minimizing penalties and then it is fairly straightforward. (haven't played it in decades so my opinion could definitely change if I tried it again; also the internet would make a huge difference.)

Zelda 2 has more RPG elements. you gain XP and when levelling up can choose to increase either attack power, health, or mana. (is it an RPG though, who knows).

Because RPGs aren't hard. The genre is based on being able to make your characters stronger than enemies so if you ever lose you can just make yourself stronger until that's impossible.

7th Saga and FF1 I mention due to how many times I've played them yet never making it very far.

7th Saga always became impossible and I had no idea how to continue.

FF1, I once made it as far as the fire/volcano place but it was so "attricious" that I couldn't survive and probably had to grind a bunch but gave up instead.

Zelda 2 I've beaten at least once, and made it to the end many times. it's not really that hard (IIRC) except for a few frustrating parts (like the last boss).

that I have played and beat. like you say, the only thing that makes it "hard" are the repeating map sections making it very hard to keep track of where you are in a cave. making your own map on paper can help a lot.

wolfy42 posted...
Clouds of Xeen was much more difficult by itself as well before it became World of Xeen.
except for M&M6 I would call all of 3-9 "easy" (quotes important). they're actually almost not even really RPGs; they're more like RPG parodies (which is one reason why I love them).

M&M6 though, while still being parody-like, is pretty brutal in a lot of places and you don't really reach god status as fast as the others.

at some point I really should play the Ultima and Wizardry games

for me 2 > 1 > 3 (4 I didn't get far enough (or else remember well enough) to judge)

I don't know why people like 3. both 1 and 3 have a couple parts where health is extremely limited and you have to play nearly perfectly for a half a level or so; at these points, the shallowness of the gameplay really sticks out. this felt especially the case in 3.

instead of sections like that, 2 has parts that are more "puzzley" which I appreciate a lot more.

I haven't played a Mega Man X game in a while, but playing MM1-4 recently, I was not terribly impressed. they're ok, but really reek of just walling content off with difficulty and not very interesting gameplay. they were good for their time but have not aged well. not sure about MMX but I suspect it has fared a bit better.
