I mean pointing out someone is unemployed while you are yourself seems hypocritical and really doesn't change anything I've said or add to the discussion at all.

It's hypocritical if he's judging you for it. If he's offering that as an explanation for why you might be having difficulty grasping how it works, though, that's fair game.

wwinterj25 posted...
The mentality of not discussing something you haven't got or done seems a odd one.

Generally speaking, if people that have done a thing are telling you how that thing works, and you're telling them that they're wrong because you don't think it should work that way based on your hypothetical picture of how it might work, you aren't going to be saying anything correct. Exceptions exist, of course, but you should typically approach such disagreements by asking questions to help you develop a better understanding and resolve what you perceive to be inconsistencies. If you approach it by insisting that you must be right and all these people that are actually experiencing it are wrong, you just look like a tool.

Everyone should keep their person life outside of a workplace in my opinion.

That's a nice ideal, but that's really not how anything works. Work is not 100% serious all the time. People routinely have casual conversations with coworkers and clients (which would include students, in the case of a teacher) about things that are not work-related, including their personal lives. That doesn't mean they're wasting time, that means they're engaging in normal human interaction with each other in the process of getting their work done. If anything, workplaces that do actually prohibit such discussions tend to be absolutely miserable because nobody has a chance to develop relationships with each other and that kind of persistent social isolation is pretty bad for people.

For that matter, most teachers make a point of introducing themselves at the start of the year and giving a bit of personal background on themselves (including mentioning their spouse, in many cases, which would implicitly disclose their sexual preference) for the sake of establishing a personal relationship with their students instead of being a robotic talking head that mindlessly parrots the curriculum and occasionally yells at them. That's healthy and normal and there's really no reason to discourage that.

You can do lots of things without doing lots of other things. Life is rarely so rigid that there's only one way to accomplish a given goal.

It's a classroom. Some students didn't approve and he was also asked to sign a letter to not discuss sexuality in a classroom that has nothing todo with that subject. The school didn't support him it seems.

Which is more a reflection of the intolerant culture in which he lives than an indication that he did anything wrong. If anything, that actually means advertising himself as supportive of LGBTQ students (particularly those that have yet to come out) is even more important, since it's unlikely they'll get that support from anyone else around them.

Why can't the audience's expectations be challenged or changed without outrage?

*Shrug* No reason, really. I just think it's a slightly different scenario when it's performance and narratives on the line instead of athletics. Outrage is always going to be dumb (sportsball isn't serious enough to ever get genuinely outraged over), but in the case of sportsball, there are objective-ish claims about fairness and whatnot that can be empirically dismantled. For a performance, it's just a matter of "this isn't the show I want to see," which is a lot harder to change people's minds on because it's completely subjective and unfalsifiable.

Most suggestions for wealth caps I've seen are in the $50-100 million range. That'd mean people couldn't take joyrides into space, but that's really about the full extent of the quality of life impact that would have. Nobody's suggesting that people shouldn't be able to become rich enough to live in luxury for the rest of their lives (there's ample room to question whether or not a given person in that position deserves it, but by and large, the concept of becoming successful enough to live such a life is perfectly valid), just that there's zero benefit and a whole lot of harm to be had from people hoarding a thousand times that much.

Pretty much. As the regulations currently stand, there doesn't seem to be an advantage, so there's no need to adjust them. If one emerges (one way or the other), the regulations can be adjusted as needed.

Pro Wrestling is pro wrestling.

Eh, as much as pro wrestling does involve no small degree of athleticism (though not enough to warrant gender segregation), the fact that it's pure showmanship means gender segregation is more a matter of appealing to the audience's expectations as anything to do with actual athletics. That runs smack into the "guys shouldn't beat up women" brand of sexism pretty much immediately (which is also driving the transphobic hate here), which cuts down on the number of people that will enjoy watching it.

It did have two stories, but the second floor only had like 4-6 furniture items, if memory serves, and the first floor was all other items. Homophobia is a specific reason, I said people should be able to be a dick for no reason.

Homophobia is an action, not a reason. There is no reason for homophobia (not one that stands up to any sort of logical muster, at least), so every instance of being homophobic is being a dick for no reason.

Of course, even then, kids generally aren't allowed to be dicks in classrooms (at least not on paper). Students are held to certain behavioural standards and disciplined for violating them. Very often, however, homophobia (et al) is ignored in those standards, usually because of systemic homophobia among the school's staff (that still being a rather widespread issue and all), so having a teacher explicitly indicate that they intend to hold homophobic harassment to the same standard as other harassment (which, you might note, is exactly the opposite of a double standard) does a lot to comfort LGBTQ students who might not otherwise experience that protection in their lives.

That's all the pride flag means, and what a "safe space" is: a commitment to making sure that LGBTQ kids feel as safe as everyone else gets to. I don't know why you're so desperate to interpret it as a heinous assault on free speech, but that's a completely baseless overreaction.

Plus there are people who do not identify as trans with these brain abnormalities. Are they in denial? Do we begin assigning gender based on brain scans instead of overall physical biology?

You could always ask them how they feel about their gender and treat them accordingly. That seems like an absurdly complex, difficult approach compared to conducting exhaustive brain scans and measurements of hormones, but there might be some merit to it.

Perhaps a slight oversimplification, but the basic gist of it remains valid: If people feel wrong forcing themselves to behave like the gender their genitals suggest they are, what other measurements matter? You can point out that you don't see a neuroanatomical basis for those feelings all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that they're there, nor does it change the fact that they're going to be happier if you respect them.

Just let trans people's doctors guide them through the process of figuring out their identity. If transitioning helps them, let them transition. If it doesn't, let their doctor figure out what will. Lay people attacking that isn't going to help anyone, and in fact is only going to result in more aggressive promotion of transitioning because people feel the need to defend against it. As time goes on, we'll develop a better understanding of where gender dysmorphia comes from and improve our ability to predict whether or not transitioning is appropriate, but neither you nor any other armchair psychologist are going to make that happen any faster by denying the disorder's validity.

In the mean time, what science does definitively show us is that trans people's suicide risk is significantly lower for each aspect of their life in which they're accepted as their target gender, so maybe just do that.

you're engaging in the server-wide conflict. you're a victim of the other side, sure, but you're in a weak position and that's the consequence of being weak. whether it's a "waste of time" or not, it's not "just" a waste of time, it's a consequence and a situation to work your way out of. it's a challenge, even if it's a different challenge.

That consequence is just a waste of time, though. It takes regular game progression and makes it take longer for absolutely no reason. Making game progression take longer because I'm having fun fighting other people? That's cool, I'm trading efficiency for fun. Making game progression take longer because I keep getting one-shot by some bored dude? That's boring, because I'm trading efficiency for absolutely nothing.

Sahuagin posted...
it's not necessarily frustrating, that's your subjective opinion.

You're saying you genuinely enjoyed not actually getting to play the game in the time you had available because somebody decided they were bored enough to stop you from doing so?

Sahuagin posted...
I guess you're seeing the picture much narrower than me. you want local-pvp without global-pvp. I would actually want *more* global-pvp. if there are gankers on the opposing side at a certain level, then there should be corresponding counter-gankers on your side to deal with them, and in the near future you'll be one of those counter-gankers (assuming you actually want to PvP which it sounds like you don't actually).

That's where the issue of ideal populations comes in: I'd love more global PvP in which people would actually travel to hotspots to participate in skirmishes and deal with gankers. That just didn't happen on any of my servers, though. PvP was mostly limited to "hey look somebody from the opposite faction is also questing here I'll fight them" and "I just got one-shot by a level 60 camping a level 20 zone." There just wasn't the population density to support battles that would actually last longer than it took to ride a gryphon there (another major limiting factor: nobody wants to spend 15 minutes travelling to deal with a ganker that may or may not still be there when they arrive), so it was very rare to see anyone do that.

Sahuagin posted...
you're still acting like it's the game's job to "entertain" you

Yes, yes it is. That is why games exist, after all.

Sahuagin posted...
when what we're talking about is dynamic player interaction and global player versus player combat, rather than a pre-packaged hand-holding experience.

The other players didn't do a particularly good job of entertaining me either.

More than that, though, a well-designed PvP system guides that dynamic player interaction in such a way that it becomes fun. There's no reason the game couldn't have restricted high-level gankers to prevent them from wasting everyone else's time. In fact, that would probably actually have made for better world PvP, because people's experiences on PvP servers wouldn't be soured by gankers they have literally zero chance of beating. There could also have been some sort of bounty system to reward those that tracked down griefers that made a habit of killing lower-level players or quest NPC's, making that actually be a risky endeavour.

That last point touches on one of the biggest issues WoW's world PvP had, actually: There was virtually no reward for participating in it. In a genre that's built entirely around gradually rewarding people for the things they do, you can't expect an entire gameplay paradigm to sustain itself purely by the fun of participating. People are going to prefer to do other things that actually accomplish something, and get annoyed when people that are trying to PvP for PvP's sake interfere with that.

Sahuagin posted...
this is the brutal PvP server. embrace the brutality or go somewhere else.

I really wouldn't call it "brutality." Nothing about it is particularly hard. It's just tedious and annoying. I'm not sure why "I put up with being bored for longer than you were willing to" is supposed to be some kind of badge of honour (arguably, that's MMO progress in a nutshell, but I think we can identify a difference between enjoying the game's actual gameplay), but this definitely isn't a matter of throwing yourself against failure until you learn enough from those failures to overcome them (a la Dark Souls and the like). It's a matter of putting up with arbitrary, capricious losses that waste your time until eventually you don't have to worry about that anymore. Your growth is gated by game mechanics, rather than any actual personal accomplishment, and that means there's substantially less satisfaction involved in achieving that growth.

More accurately, I want it to be limited to fights that are statistically possible to win. Losing fights that I could have won had I gitten gud is motivation to git gud. Obviously I'm not going to win every fight, and whining about being legitimately beaten is just lame. Losing fights with absolutely no chance of victory, however, is just a waste of time, and the knowledge that I will eventually become powerful enough to eliminate that risk doesn't change how much of a waste it is.

Sure, it never completely shuts you down, but if you've only got an hour to play, spending 20-30 minutes of that corpse hopping is just frustrating (heck, even a single 5-minute corpse run is bothersome in that situation), especially when the only reason it's happening is because somebody who's bored is choosing to harass you despite getting absolutely nothing out of it. It's just a pointless waste of time.

Again, I enjoyed the occasional instance of actually fighting with a real opponent for control of an area where I wanted to quest/farm/whatever. That was great fun, and would have been even better with a few more people getting involved in the skirmish (though that was exceedingly rare). That didn't happen enough to offset the pointless waste of time that was getting ganked, though, so overall, not a particularly entertaining experience.

Because the data provided is based on per capita values, not absolute ones. LA county has a population of 10 million, so 20 cases per 100,000 (the upper bound of the tier it's in on that map) is 2000 per day.

They also never saw 35k per day. Their 7-day average (which is what that map is showing) peaked at 16,194 on January 1, which was quite a while ago. The peak of their most recent surge was 4771, on August 21, but that surge seems to have passed and their 7-day average as of yesterday is 1922 (which, as you may notice, is between 10 and 20 per 100,000, or exactly the bracket that map puts them in).

what are you even asking for? you want dynamic raw PvP, except only when convenient and only if you're in the mood (hint-hint: PvE server). you want to be vulnerable, but not in a way that ever inconveniences you. you're specifically choosing the brutal option and then complaining when it's actually brutal.

More vulnerability that works out to an actual entertaining challenge, as opposed to just being an inconvenient waste of time. PvE servers let me decide when I want people to be able to attack me, but I completely lose the ability to decide when I want to attack other people, meaning the option might as well not exist. PvP servers offer a more dynamic system, but in practice there generally weren't enough people around for it to actually be all that dynamic.

. and another thing I'm forgetting is that if there's a high-level guy ganking people, well then there's a PvP chat channel and there's *other players* that would be happy to show up and take care of him.

It's an option, but begging other bored people for help isn't fun, in my mind.

Sahuagin posted...
"the occasional bored ganker" is enough to ruin it for you? who cares?

Obviously, I care, since I found it more bothersome than entertaining. While I wouldn't say it "ruins it," it can result in a completely wasted session, depending on how long one has to play. That's pretty definitely a negative thing, and I just didn't have enough genuinely enjoyable PvP experiences to balance that out.

Sahuagin posted...
I *want* to be afraid of the other faction.

I want there to be unpredictable risks based on what the other faction does, mixing things up compared to what PvE can offer. Those risks should be fair, though, not just random roadblocks that I genuinely can't do anything to overcome except corpse hop my way away and go somewhere else. To make a PvE analogy, if players could randomly have max-level enemies spawn on their heads in levelling zones, that wouldn't be fun. That's just an unavoidable corpse run that wastes their time. Having those enemies wander around such that you can avoid them if you pay attention (if I'm remembering the name right, this describes the Fel Reaver in one of the BC zones) is interesting, but max-level players aren't nearly as easy to see coming and are much harder to escape (because max-level players have better mounts and movement options).

Basically, being on edge because the world is never as safe as it would seem based on the local mobs is fun. Being on edge because there's a constant risk of being one-shot by an invisible rogue twice your level isn't. My PvP server experience was dominated by the latter to enough of an extent that I wasn't able to enjoy the former, so I generally stuck to PvE servers.

Eh, I wouldn't call cellulitis a non-serious issue. Especially not with that kind of swelling. It's generally fairly easy to treat, and minor cases will go away on their own, but leaving a bad enough case untreated can lead to life-threatening infections. It was definitely worth getting checked out.

But we're not talking about any disagreement. We're talking specifically about intolerance of LGBTQ people. Nobody's said anything about not allowing people to disagree in any more general sense.

None of that is in anything I posted. I asked you a very direct question and you are labeling the subject matter as things that it is not.

You asked a direct question about "making a commitment," and that commitment is specifically to not harass and belittle people based on their sexual orientation/gender identity. By not making that commitment, one indicates that one intends to harass or belittle people based on their sexual orientation.

You're trying very hard to generalize this situation in ways for which there is no reason to generalize this situation, in an apparent effort to come up with a reason to be offended by a teacher hanging a pride flag. I'm not sure why you're so bothered by this, but it's really not a problem.

Well, my point is pretty simple, just that it's literally her first match, so I'm unsure of what people are getting upset about, when 'unfair win ratios' were mentioned. Thanks for the further info though.

I think his point is that McLaughlin has fighting records from her pre-UFC experience which could be referenced, so it's not entirely accurate to say "she only has one fight you can't gauge a win rate from that." That's a little harder to interpret meaningfully because non-UFC leagues are less consistent and most UFC fighters will have had exceptionally high win rates in their pre-UFC days (otherwise they wouldn't have qualified), but it still would probably be worthwhile to look at her pre-UFC stats.

Either way, it sounds like there's more data available than it seems. That might be worth dredging up, though I wouldn't know where to start with that.

Well then I dunno. I could still see them doing a PC port to squeeze a few more bucks out of it now that its system-selling ability has been mostly exhausted, but that's a lot less likely than if it were actually a third party.

Note this has nothing to do with them being a dick to anyone. It's purely a matter of not agreeing with a condition.

That condition is not being a dick to people for uncontrollable personal characteristics that do nothing to harm anyone else. You cannot separate "being a dick" from "not agreeing with [that] condition" because they are one and the same.

SKARDAVNELNATE posted...
By your own reasoning the safe space requires that everyone within it be tolerant of certain people, but those individuals don't have to be tolerant of anyone else within the space.

Being tolerant does not require tolerance of those that are intolerant. That's how Nazis happen(ed). That's not the paradox some people believe it to be, that's just pausing to exercise some common sense instead of applying a blanket "I should respect their opinion!" to absolutely everything everyone says. "Common sense" leaves some room for subjectivity, certainly, but if you believe a given interpretation is wrong, argue that specific case instead of trying to suggest that all opinions are equally not shit.

Yes, being homophobic to one's peers just to spite what they see as a teacher being unreasonable makes one a piece of shit. If they have a problem with how the class is being run, they should take that up with the teacher or somebody else that's actually responsible for and has the power to change that, not harass or belittle their peers.

well that's what a PvE server is.

Except not, because there's virtually no world PvP on PvE servers because of the opt-in approach.

Sahuagin posted...
"harassed by" doesn't enter into it; if that's what you call it then you're signing up for the wrong thing.

That was the vast majority of my PvP experience on PvP servers: Some bored person camping the corpses of whoever he could find, usually with enough of a level and/or gear advantage that the only chance of getting out of it was rezzing at the graveyard and going somewhere else (and incurring a pretty substantial penalty in the process), hoping somebody stronger came along who decided to care (pretty rare), or begging for help in the local channel. "Harassed by" is a perfectly accurate description of that.

Like Clench said, a good world PvP experience depends on a careful balance of players: Too few (my experience, for the most part), and the occasional bored ganker just makes everyone's leveling experience miserable because the area doesn't end up being enough of a battleground for stronger players to have genuine competition. Too many, and it's just a mess and you never feel like you're personally making any difference in the fight. I like the idea of organic, large-scale PvP, but more often than not, what actually ended up happening just made the game more tedious, not more enjoyable.

(there are a lot of people though that shouldn't even be on a PvP server in the first place and just hate spontaneous PvP despite playing on a PvP server for whatever reason.)

Generally, that's because they like the idea of world PvP, but don't want to be systematically harassed by some bored higher-level player or twink. People also sometimes just want to be left to whatever PvE thing they're attempting to do, even if they generally like PvP.

why should there be a such thing as a recall?

Generally to allow some recourse for a population to get rid of somebody that they voted in, but turned out to be so terrible that waiting out the remainder of the term would be unacceptably bad.

That said, requiring fewer votes to start a recall election than voted against the governor in the previous election seems like it has a lot of potential to be abused. That's just asking for people that are butthurt about losing the election to immediately demand a new one until eventually they get an outcome they like.

And I dont think its silly. Big choices like this should come with bit consequences.

That's completely arbitrary, though, and not altogether practical to enforce. You're literally suggesting a restraining order that the subject of the order (the child) doesn't agree to and can never override, for the sake of arbitrarily attaching major consequences to what's functionally nothing more than a custody decision. The infrastructure already exists to grant one parent sole custody without resorting to restraining orders (outside of extreme cases where the other parent really doesn't cope well with that decision, but that's in response to actual criminal harassment). There's no reason this system couldn't just follow that.

For a system that already can't be kept on shelves, and by the time supply can keep up with demand, Demon's Souls won't be a major factor in people's purchasing decisions. There's not much value in keeping it exclusive. If anything, there's an incentive to develop a PC port because so few people have been able to get PS5's that I expect that it has hurt From's ability to recover their development budget.

The points people put forth make sense, but never seem to pan out across the board.

This is really the central issue here. Yes, it makes sense that there would be problems in theory, and if you'd presented that theory to me before data were available, I would have completely agreed. But now data is available, and that theory falls flat in the face of actual evidence. Evidently, for all the concerns about "boy puberty" and whatnot, HRT does enough to harm athletic prowess that trans people are not measurably outperforming their cis counterparts. That is the empirical reality of the situation.

It means that they confirm that the leak occurred and that there is information in the leak, but that some of the information in the leak is not verified. Meaning some of those games - particularly ones that haven't been announced - may not exist. That's how I interpreted it anyway. I think they're just covering their asses. Some of those unannounced games might not see the light of day but I bet more than a few are real and coming

So... "We can confirm that there are games coming." That's actually a pretty clever way to respond to a leak like this, I guess, since it maintains hype while not actually committing to anything.
