This is pretty common the more powerful your target/source is. They have the ability to withhold information and so you have to give them more control over what is said. You see the same problem with the military, CEOs, high level celebs, etc. And if you go full investigative journalist, you get blacklisted and possibly sued.

It's a big problem with access/insider journalism.

Some things matter more to individuals in actual lived reality than other things and like I said, some things affect the world more than others. If you think that capitalism as it currently exists should be left completely unchanged, but also think that gay people should be able to get married and the war on drugs should end, which do you think matters more subjectively and objectively?

Immigration tends to be a high salience issue, especially when people phrase it the way you did. When someone has strong views on that, it tends to color their views of people who disagree more strongly than most other things, ranging from "they're killing our jobs" to white replacement shit.

Same with the military part, that indicates a siege mentality/strength focus.

Opinion polls since the 2016 election at least shows that some opinions are far more predictive of how someone actually votes than others. Especially ones related to race and immigration and we know how people who think that way vote in reality.

There's many Republicans that are for free health care, want free or subsidized college, or want legal weed, but a few issues and overwhelming hatred of the left override that. Left wing opinions are generally significantly more popular than right wing ones (especially economically) and yet people still vote right wing because the issues that decide their self image go the other way.

Having that mix does not mean you are not left wing or right wing. Believing a core right wing tenet that keeps the world right wing along with something that benefits you and hardly affects the world does not a centrist make.

Taking from that list for example, wanting a bigger military and closed borders along with being okay with trans people existing does not make you a centrist, it makes you a right winger with one non-right wing view. Most people have a hodgepodge of views like this, that doesn't mean some things are not way more salient or abhorrent to them than others either.

Based on this article, the Democrats are clearly a centrist party as a party that includes liberals and social democrats and conservatives. If someone in America considers that party too left wing, they are not a centrist, they are a conservative.

Many are confusing "not far/hard right" with centrist.

That's not to say that you have to be a Democrat if you're a centrist. My statement only applies if you think the Dems are too left.

If you think most people would have run away, you're ignoring the fact that most people in fact don't do that whether innocent or guilty. People are accused of murder or other serious crimes every day and don't do this.

Someone refusing to identify with one of two party doesn't mean they're not highly ideological. My analysis is truthful and isn't ignoring the American political reality. I'm well aware that most Americans don't think the way I do and have a grab bag of opinions. But what you're not recognizing is that not all opinions in the grab bag are equal. Being okay with weed and the gays but thinking that we should also abolish most social programs doesn't make you a moderate or a centrist, it makes you far right economically and moderate socially, aka right wing.

You could also be ideologically aligned with the Trumpist movement without having ever voted for any Republican (not that you are)

Also to respond to Trumble, someone might have coherent opinions that point exclusively in one direction not because it aligns with their sports team or tribal identity but because their values lead them there. For example, if a core thing for you is opposing unjust hierarchies, basically any right wing view becomes toxic to you because they're almost all built on preserving hierarchy.

It would be, which is probably why the take is actually "If people from both sides regularly think you're on the opposite side from them, you're probably actually in the middle". Note how the nature of the disagreement is more specific, and no subjective judgement is made about right or wrong, unlike your strawman.

You could also just have an extreme jumble of opinions. I've seen that a fair bit as well.

Another common thing to note: Many people who are convinced centrists are really on the other side, believe the actual "center" to be a lot closer to their own position than it really is. (Another trait almost always seen in the same people, is that they'll define themselves as moderate but hold stances that are pretty extreme.)

This is the point I was making. They have no real concept of what other people believe or where they are relative to others.

And many many of the people you're saying are not fascists are fascists. Not every single Republican or far righter are, but they in fact believe in a fundamentally different version of reality and politics than I do as evidenced by the fact that they tried to overturn an election with threats of violence.

Pretty far right either politically or socially or both

Smug about their political independence even though they are in lock step with the right on the economic or social axis.

Far more anti-left than anti-right. (This is the most universal one)

And ignorant about where they actually are on the political spectrum (thinking that liking weed or not wanting to electrocute the gays or wanting free health care makes you "left leaning")

Our information atmosphere is already so poisoned that it's prolonging a pandemic and killing hundreds of thousands of people, and caused an insurrection. This type of thing is gonna be a catastrophe and I'm not really sure what the upside for society is.

This is active pro-Covid behavior. There's no other principle behind it. The GOP have been the biggest supporters of the virus in practice since day one.

His viewpoints were conveyed in a tactless manner because hes a comedian. In a non-comedic setting he would deliver them in a reasonable manner. Comedians arent meant to be reasonable, theyre meant to be funny. People are offended by what he said because they take the manner in which he said them literally instead of taking context and intent into account.

In a non-comedic setting he announced that he's a TERF and agrees with J.K. Rowling on trans people. He's just saying what he thinks up there and people are defending it because they think anything you say on a stage with a mic in your hand has to be free from criticism or you're a joyless SJW that's killing free speech.

He is viewed pretty much universally by his peers as the greatest comedian of this generation and possibly of all time so everyone is gonna stand by and defend him.

Things that are neutral or irrelevant prove they're right.

Things that conclusively refute their ideas prove that they're right most of all because they're evidence of a conspiracy.

That's the brainworm infested mindset that these people are stuck in and it can't be allowed to spread. Once people get stuck there, the recovery rate is almost zero.
