People don't get to choose whether they live or not. And many people can't work, but SSI doesn't pay enough for them to make rent and affordable/public housing waitlists are decades long where I live. In the past, people could simply build their own shelter, wherever another person hadn't already built theirs, but now, almost all livable land is either privately or publicly owned, and so it's illegal to build your own shelter. Every human being needs shelter and it's better for society that they have it.

There's a guy down not 500 yards from me with no legs. He lives in a vacant lot with a tent. All he appears to have is his tent and his wheelchair. Why isn't humanity enough to entitle him to shelter?

These answers are always very revealing

To respond to your other post, risks that a landlord takes on as an investor are not services they provide to the public. Every investment has risk, but I don't see other types of investors spinning that as some value they're providing.

As for the answer to this, it's a massive investment in housing as a human right and a social good. For example, the money we spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could have provided adequate housing for every man, woman, and child in the country. The key is to increase affordable housing supply to such an extent that people can get it anywhere, anytime, and poverty/crime/drugs etc are not concentrated in any one area. That's how we avoid stigmatizing affordable or public housing and also how we avoid creating crumbling housing projects.

Since we already have enough existing housing to house every person, that could be done through increasing the amount of existing vouchers and eliminating restrictions on them, while requiring landlords to take them. We could build public housing and not let racism cause us to disinvest in it and concentrate all the poorest people in it. Public housing doesn't have to mean "slum", we simply let it mean that because we hated poor people and minorities.

It wouldn't be hard if we actually wanted to solve it. The issue is that we actively don't. Many fear that capitalism will collapse if people don't have the threat of homelessness forcing them to work shitty, abusive, low paying jobs. Americans are also scared of nothing more than the thought of someone somewhere getting something for free or that they didn't "earn". They'd much rather have worse services and a worse society than have an "underserving" person be given anything.

If we saw someone starving on the street, any decent American would give them food. But if we see a homeless person baking in the sun, soaking in the rain, or freezing in the snow, many say "get a job, go rent somewhere"

All of that is what keeps us from making the investment. If we can spend trillions on war, only to achieve nothing, we can house human beings.

But by all means use your anecdotal experience to extrapolate the behavior of landlords across the entirety of America.
And there are plenty avenues available to complain about slum landlords not all of them cost money either.
And who you choose to rent from is a choice just like deciding what restaurant to eat at is.
The only way to get reform is drawing attention to landlords who are breaking their own rental agreements.
Or you could just do nothing and bitch about on here and somehow expect the world to fix these problems for you.

Who you "choose" to rent from is not at all a choice like which restaurant you decide to eat at. Just off the top of my head, the choice isn't between eating at a restaurant and not eating at all like it is with housing. Restaurants aren't subject to decades long wait lists for non-shitty, non-exorbitantly priced housing. The number of restaurants doesn't decrease the amount of food you could reasonably buy from the grocery store. People aren't forced to spend 30/40/50 percent of their income on restaurants just for existing.

Housing rental is not like the rest of the economy, normal notions of choice don't apply.

Can anyone dispute the fact that for many people, they don't actually provide a service?

I'm not talking about people who are mobile, unattached to an area, don't want to deal with maintenance, or want special services.

I'm talking about poor and working class people who just want a roof over their heads, but can't buy one. For them, renting isn't a voluntary and rational choice they're making, it's a fee they pay to avoid being on the street.

They very often pay to live in unsafe, unhealthy, or even unliveable housing. Again, not because of their desires, but because of the amount of money they have. This rented housing is often more expensive on a monthly basis than buying a comparable unit. And the renter builds no equity, they are simply setting money on fire each month.

If the person that is renting a place like that because of lack of money lacks money and can't pay rent in full for any reason, the landlord doesn't even have to maintain the unit anymore and can stop providing whatever "services" they provide.

Doesn't seem like a free and equal exchange to me.

Here in DC, one of the most popular LGBT bars on the most popular drinking streets has fully gender neutral bathrooms. If young, horny, drunk, and high people can use the same bathrooms with no supervision, I think such things can be handled at places of work and grocery stores etc.

You couldn't have anyone that's not black play that role and have it make sense just like it wouldn't make sense for Shang Chi not to be Asian. I think people would just like to see an end to the double standard. We know there would be outrage if the races were reversed. There always is. This was not the best way to leave, the best way to leave would have been to wage the war effectively and in a non-corrupt manner from the beginning. But that was never going to happen and we couldn't go back in time and make it happen.

This is the only way it was ever going to end because the fundamentals were not improving. I'm not aware of a time that a stable, multi-ethnic, liberal democracy with rule of law, safety, and respect for human rights was built through bombing, money, and occupation from a foreign empire, thousands of miles away. I don't see any reason to think that would have materialized with more time.

In the meantime, we're messing with the sovereignty of a "country", killing people, and spending billions/trillions, and sending multiple generations of soldiers over there. Continuing that wasn't a great option.

To people saying "it's never been better": That's true. But we very likely live at a relative peak, and the things we had to do to get here are the exact things that will cause climate change.

At the rate we're going, we're going to be living in a world where people were used to a certain standard of living and it's going to get a lot worse. That's happened multiple times in history, very often due to environmental factors, and living during that period has been....bad. Wars, coups, revolutions, mass migrations, famines, droughts, extreme weather, pandemics, you name it.

That's what the science tells us we're heading for. You can choose not to believe it, but some of us genuinely do. And I don't want to bring kids into that because there's just no reason to. That is a rational response. I genuinely hope it doesn't happen because I don't want to live during a decline period, but it's probably going to happen based on the apathy and disbelief I see daily and in this topic.

It is surprising when they a) didn't do that before b) it's not the norm in the industry c) people have been working without a paycut since March 2020 and presumably before d) the paycut occurs without negotiation or a law being passed (differing from the feds)

The comparison you're trying to make also doesn't make sense because one was an involuntary change forced by the pandemic and enforced by the companies themselves, upon the workers. The other is a voluntary change to maintain profits and offload costs onto employees. And other employers are making different decisions.

Also, note how I didn't say that google employees have no bargaining power? I said that at the end of the day, they still assert the power to do things like this without employee input. You can tell that by the fact that they're doing it.

Then we all got the same information about Covid variants that made returning riskier. Nothing sudden or surprising about some people electing to stay home.

Furthermore, just like they've asserted control over the terms of pay, they could have decided that returning to the office is mandatory, regardless of what the workers wanted, and they could have done so at any time (provided the law allowed them) and can still do so.

At the end of the day, the employers have the power and you cheer that at every opportunity.

There's nothing wrong with this? The entire reason the salaries are so high to begin with is because of the cost of living in places like SF. The government literally has the same kind of pay scale for federal workers.

This is an unnegotiated, unilateral, sudden, and fundamental change to payment practices to lower the pay of employees, while also offloading all utility/work infrastructure costs onto them. All while they do the same level of work they've been doing during and before the pandemic.

Of course you support such a thing.

If this is a real story, you should be a good friend and support him and treat what he said as true. Not doing that is a much worse thing to do and will lead to much worse outcomes than the other way around.

People have come up with endless, ever shifting reasons not to take the vaccine. This is just one of many.

My understanding is that you can't sue vaccine manufacturers in general for any of the vaccines we take, and that hasn't been a problem. I personally think that people should be allowed to sue them, but the reality is that 99.999999% of those lawsuits would be expensive show trials where anti-vaxxers made false or unverifiable claims.

If someone really feels and can prove their injury was caused by an unsafe vaccine, there's a no-fault process for compensation as well.

This isn't even the reason most people cite though and it's not a good reason even if it was.

It's shown me that a lot of people's brains are "straight up broke" to use a medical term. We have people refusing to wear a piece of cloth over their nose and mouth. Refusing to get a free medical miracle vaccine that people are begging for and dying without because it's "experimental" or "has microchips" or something similar. People attempting to claim the right to act as plague vectors without other people commenting or restricting them in any way.

Just the extreme selfishness and pathological levels of individualistic thinking. So many people thinking that a "right" or "choice" means that what they do doesn't affect others and no one else has an interest in it.

I will never see a lot of people the same after this.
