Yeah, it was gutting to see Lando fall right at the end like that. I can't believe his team wasn't more forceful about bringing him in. They could see the radar like everyone else. They should've known he wouldn't make it.

Yeah, he probably still loses the battle with Hamilton in those last couple laps, but at least he would have had a fighting chance and almost guaranteed been on the podium.

Personal e-mail I use for things like XBoxLive/Steam/PSN accounts and whatnot.
Spam e-mail I use to sign up for stupid one-off shit that I know is probably going to end up getting me on some annoying spam lists.

To anybody who's curious, Benford's Law inherently does not work for detecting fraudulent elections. Matt Parker did a great video explaining why for the 2020 election:

So next time you hear somebody reference Benford's Law as evidence when it comes to election fraud, you can pretty much dismiss them out of hand.

The Hamilton/Verstappen fight is getting way too heated, if you ask me. It was really exciting at the start of the season, but it's just gotten more and more dangerous as the season has gone on. Neither of them is driving smart anymore, and they're going to get someone seriously hurt if this keeps going much longer.

Funnily enough, once they took each other out, the race actually got way more exciting.

Yeah, no. Trying to have a baby has absolutely nothing to do with her decision. She's had months to get vaccinated and chosen not to so far. She's not refusing it now because she's trying to get pregnant. She just doesn't have the spine to actually say she's anti-vax.

If she actually cared about putting her "family and personal health first" she'd have been vaccinated ages ago like a responsible parent.

teep_ posted...
Can someone explain the ambiguity? In particular, how does one reach the answer 1/2?

It depends entirely on precisely how the "at least one of them is heads" is determined. From the wiki article I posted:

  • From all families with two children, at least one of whom is a boy, a family is chosen at random. This would yield the answer of 1/3.
  • From all families with two children, one child is selected at random, and the sex of that child is specified to be a boy. This would yield an answer of 1/2.

Replace "boy/girl" with "heads/tails" for coin flipping, obviously, but the premise is identical.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_or_Girl_paradox

It's not a riddle. It's just an ambiguous wording of the problem that literally leads to 2 different (and equally correct) answers, depending on how the information that "at least one of them was heads" was obtained.

It could be either 1/2 or 1/3. There is no way to determine which case is applicable.

Seriously, though, there is a problem. It's not necessarily with the breed itself, mind you. But there is something about the public opinion of Pit Bulls that is making people act more casually with them than is safe. Any animal can be safely handled, but different animals require different precautions and different levels of care to do so. And somehow Pit Bulls in the US seem to have been generally accepted by the public as being in a "less dangerous" category than they reasonably should be. So people are consistently putting themselves into situations with the breed that they shouldn't and being more careless around them than they should.

Lots of people swim with sharks and do so safely. But if someone jumps into shark-infested waters and starts flailing around with a bucket of chum, then nobody is going to be surprised when they get attacked. Because everybody reasonably understands that's not how you safely act around sharks. It's a hyperbolic example, obviously, but that's the general premise. When it comes to Pit Bulls, though, there seems to be a pretty big disconnect between how people should interact with them and how people think they should interact with them.

You could also multiply both sides of the equation by 3 to deal with only whole numbers. But it's not necessary at all.

The absolute value signs on the left are irrelevant, since you're only dealing with adding positive numbers.

...that you're completely and utterly uninterested in the conversation? And they just won't stop talking? But they've been rambling for like 5 minutes and have gone off on so many tangents full of so many unnecessary details that you can't even remember what the initial topic was? And the only things you've added to the conversation have been the occasional disinterested "hmm" and "uh huh." But you like the person, so you aren't going to be a dick and just tell them to shut up.

My mom is like this. Good god, it's almost painful to talk to her. She's a teacher, and the conversation we just had started with talking about her new students' test scores. Fair enough, I have opinions on the current state of education in this country and I can relate to her frustrations. She somehow finished with a solid 5 minutes of literal turn-by-turn directions of where a school bus had to detour due to roadwork during a field trip they went on 2 weeks ago. I do not know how the conversation got there. Like seriously, all the information I needed was "there was roadwork, so the bus had to take a convoluted detour and the field trip became a fiasco." I do not need to know that they made a right turn on this street when they wanted to go left, so that meant they had to go up 3 blocks in the wrong direction to find a connection to some other street that could get them to another street and then circle back around.......JUST STOP ALREADY. IT DOESN'T MATTER. I'm sorry your day sucked, and I can empathize with that, but please for the love of god stop torturing me with inane details.

But she's my mom and I love her. So I let her vent. But all I really want to say is just "please shut the fuck up, I have no idea what you're on about and it is physically impossible for me to care less."

Anybody else have friends/family like this?

I don't know when the video was taken, but if it's recent, then not letting the kid walk from the street has nothing to do with it being "unsafe" due to cars or accidents. Those people going from car to car in front of the school are probably taking temperatures before allowing the kids to enter. If you've got a fever, you can't come in.
