This actually reminds me of the adaptation of the Percy Jackson books (which I admittedly haven't seen). In the novels, the best friend is a nerdy nature loving sissy. In the films they made him black, and from what I could tell from the previews his character was changed into "goofy black best friend". I do think to some extent directors use an actor's race to convey a character archetype. But that's on the film maker's, not the actor's race.

Well I've read so many cringey stories online about nerdy failures having a horrible first time they kind of blend together in my mind with ICOYAR's stories.

It doesn't even matter who they are, or what it's about. Any kind of negative response triggers an immediate emotional reaction on my part. It could be when people are pointing out structural or spelling errors, or criticizing my skill at a game, or insulting my taste or the way I look.

To counter act this, when posting online I utilize my actual feelings less and less, and generally stick to posting deliberate inanities or putting as little effort as possible into a post as possible, while simultaneously trying to elicit a response. While in the short term this is effective, it builds up a negative reputation around my online persona. So when I do respond seriously and sincerely, it triggers the inevitable responses of "Oh look classic shitlord Blightboy making more shitty posts". This encourages me to further retreat into my shell, until eventually my posts consist of little to nothing of my actual personality or feelings.

This general principle extends to my behaviour in real life as well, as I feel an intense need for the approval of those I do not know (or do know, but this is less and less common as I isolate myself). While this seemingly biological need is endless, I actually have little fondness for individuals. In fact I feel like I've never met someone who I feel any kind of emotional connection or attraction towards, excluding how individuals can directly benefit me. So essentially I have no reason to interact with people as they can only hurt me and never help me.

And this, in full circle, leads me directly back to the internet, where I can, through methods explained above, obtain (if not approval) acknowledgment and tolerance from those I can't even see. All this without having to severely risk slights to my own sense of self. But like a drug this strategy seems to be less and less effective over time, as what I really seek is approval for how I actually perceive myself, and not approval for the fake (and often malicious and malevolent) mask I've created for myself as a shield. Inevitably, it seems something in my mind is going to snap, and it's probably not going to be pleasant for me or those around me when it happens.
