Her heel turn did wonders for her confidence.

And her special relationship with Tony makes her feel like such a star because she sting and cody are the only ones Schiavone talks about this way.

And then shes just got guts. Like holy shit does she have guts.

I mean Rosas great but...this match was all about that Britt Baker taking the step from good to "pillar of the company"

Like you can like or dislike a wrestler all you want for any reason you want but sometimes you're reaching so far out of bounds that you pretty much are objectively wrong and need to have a little humility about it and maybe realize you know maybe there's something you're not seeing and it isn't always because the other person likes this wrestler is a simp or whatever random word you picked up off b8 that day you know? (Or that you're an Eva Marie simp look anyone can do it so fun)

I mean she's working heel in terms of the match structure (a term I use loosely for these matches) and in storyline is a heel because she's friends with Britt Baker.

But yeah nothing else in her presentation is heelish - you have friggin Paul Wight singing along to the song.

You compare her to The Miz - but this is like Santino without the solid worker underneath in terms of presentation. Like at least no one's really selling for her offense beyond Shida's selling for those mic shots.

"She does a good rest hold and has one okay spot" is a pretty low bar you guys have set for her to clear here.

Right which is my entire thesis.

She is fine as like the clown warming up the crowd against The Allie Kat on a GCW show before Danhausen and Chris Dickinson go at it.

Shes not good enough to wrestle for AEW.

Remember - the joshi are supposed to be their ringers while they develop young talent. Maki isnt even as good as Anna Jay or Abaddon. And thats not exactly a high bar.

I congratulate you for being a simp then biscuit.

But I think you're wrong. To the point where we cant even talk about her because you apparently arent watching the same wrestler I am.

I cannot even imagine holding the opinion that her match with Riho was anything but insultingly bad and boring to boot. Nothing they did had any impact, Maki was constantly out of position and being covered for by Riho who worked her ass off to keep it from completely falling apart. Her character work is accidentally playing the idol gimmick straight. Not entirely her fault, Tony and Big Show are also playing it straight. Other than throwing the middle finger once per match nothing about her character comes through on tv.

Shes trying to play to the crowd for cheap pops, which is fine except she's "working heel" so actually shes doing...nothing. I put "working heel" in scare quotes because none of her strikes have any impact to them and even working with tiny little Riho she didnt manage to come across as threatening or menacing at any point.

She sucks. She is not good at anything. I've seen her in 4 matches now so this isn't just one match where she was off. The headbutt thing is cute the first time you see it. That's all she has going for her though.

I mean I dont think Panthera is completely off base. Kenny Omega gets a bit too cute and subtly buries his feud partners.

That said

Panthera posted...
Why should I buy into any beating they end up getting when this show has clearly established it's okay with making jokes out of not delivering on things it builds up?

Dude clearly this wasnt the plan. They planned to deliver on the stip. Once that was blown all that was left was to salvage it. Do I wish Kenny was a bit less of a doofus about it? Yes. Have I sat here and said they need to hotshot the title off of Kenny because of how damaged his current character is due to this? Yes.

But I think this was decently effective. It made me wanna see Eddie vs Omega.

11) Final Fantasy X (PS2, 2001)

"Listen to my story. This may be our last chance"

The cinematic style of video games was still in its infancy when Final Fantasy X came out but square immediately had a very strong grasp on how to use that style to great effect. Instantly, that stinger grabs your attention. To Xanarkand plays in the background, somber and moody and Tidus tone betrays that this story is a tragedy.

This is immediately juxtaposed by Tidus's happy go lucky attitude and the action of the first blitzball scene and the first scene with Sin. Mix in Auron's introduction and everything else and you've all but forgotten that opening until Tidus narration checks back in and his tone is still the same somber tone as it began with.

The handling of Yuna and Tidus is the only actually well told love story in the entire franchise but the whole cast, small as it is, gets to shine and play their role. Each one holds the key to unveiling some other part of the setting - and the setting itself is probably the most major character. Having Tidus slowly learn the secrets (and not-so-secrets) of Spira and his emotional reaction to them is just incredible stuff. Toss in a handful of memorable recurring NPCs and stories that interweave with Tidus' and it's just an incredibly well told story and game.

Toss in some legitimately clever mechanics with the dynamic party swapping and initiative systems and realize FFX sent JRPGs barreling into the future.

I have seen literally no actual alternative deserving winners discussed by all these people who think AEWs wins are unfair

3 exceptions:

1.) Rey Fenix winning Mexico MVP mostly off of work in America. Someone actually working in Mexico should have won. Fair

2.) Kenny Omega winning Most Outstanding. It was the closest race of all this year in any category as he narrowly edged out Kota Ibushi. If you want to say Ibushi should have won, but people are biased towards Kenny because of his new character (which shouldnt be taken into account in this category), thats reasonable.

3.) Excalibur winning Best Announcer. I have no problem with it but ironically Dave himself did and posted his case for why Kevin Kelly should have won, something he did for any other award, lol.

12.) Gemfire (Genesis, 1992)

This game was accessible to me in ways other games of its sort during its era weren't. This is essentially the same concept as Nobunaga's ambition or Romance of the Three Kingdoms, except this was set in a fantasy setting with all the fantasy trappings turned up to 11. And like I said with Sengoku Basara above, the most important thing to me with this sort of game is a sense of style which this game had it spades.

The idea is simple - the kingdom is a magical land ruled by a king who wields the power of the 7 crown jewels, 6 of which hold powerful wizards and the center one holds a dragon. The king Eselred is a tyrant and his daughter, in a desperate plea to end his rule, free the wizards from the crown and they go off in search of worthy rulers to displace Eselred. The main two, who happen to get the two most powerful wizards, are the mountain people led by Erin Blanche and the coastal forest dwellers led by Anders Lyle. The other four go off to other rulers, my favorite of whom was Garth who is just a kind old man whos entire territory is just one island off on its own. He is neither a good warrior, nor a good administrator and he is cornered by the powerful Anders. Playing as him is the game's hard mode and it was one of my great sources of pride as a kid that I was eventually able to win the game playing with Garth Chrysalis. Finally the king, Eselred, kept the dragon's gem and has by far the most territory. Defeating him takes skill cunning and patience.

The game is broken down into 4 scenarios which outline the canon way the war is meant to have gone - I would honestly kill to have had this game remade a few years later where this narrative could have been fleshed out better, but as a result my brothers and I would spend hours crafting headcanon as to how things played out in certain ways. To my great shock, years later I would learn a great deal of lore for the game exists in the form of the japanese players guide and a good deal of our headcanon ended up being true. Anyway the earlier in the game, the more territory the king has and the less everyone else has. By the 4th scenario the king is actually at parity with Erin and Anders and it's actually the most challenging scenario to win because while the King is older and kind of a shitty ruler, Erin and Anders have stupid good stats and triumphing over them as either Tudoria (who have 3 territories and one of the weaker gems but at least youre situated in an easily defended corner of the map)) or Divas (who has no wizard and is smack dab in the middle of the map sandwiched between eselred, erin and anders.)) is a very hard task.

The game is pretty ambitious featuring a combination of simple economics, macro-war planning and micro-war battles its somewhat reminiscent of an early form of the Total War series, but I have always found it more enjoyable if I am being honest.

Anyway at the end, you win free the land and hook up with the princess, yes even if you won as the sole female character. Pretty cool game and one I return to periodically.

13.) Sengoku Basara 3 (PS3, 2010)

PUT YA GUNS ON!!

To me, when it comes to Dynasty Warriors-style games, the absolute most important thing is to have that killer sense of style. Dynasty Warriors has this in bits and pieces, but its too concerned with things like historical accuracy to produce a truly great Musuo game much of the time.

Never you fear though, Capcom got involved, grabbed the unification of japan rather than the romance of the three kingdoms and produced a trio of absolutely ludicrous and fun musuo games detailing the three stages of japanese unification.

Stage 3 - the struggle between Ieyatsu Tokugawa and the remainder of the forces who had been loyal to Toyotomi, led by Ishida Mitsunari and the various remainders of other factions. The gameplay is thus a mix between the conquest focused Empires musuo titles and the story-driven titles that make up the mainline of the other series and the results are great. The maps feel alive. This applies most especially to when you play either Ieyatsu or Mitsunari who are, after all, leading the two great factions. I love the stark visual contrast between the bright and golden and unarmed Ieyatsu counterbalanced with the pale and white and dismal Ishida armed with an especially long katana. It's fucking great stuff.

It can be a little disheartening to play as some of the lesser factions and find yourself merely second fiddle to the main conflict but there are enough twists and turns to keep things entertaining. For example, the hilariously unlucky Kuroda Kanbei, who is the imprisoned leader of a faction that wishes to have independence for the Kyushu region or really any region at all, as he is an opportunist through and through. He winds up interrupting the climactic final battle to try and take back the key to his giant prison ball that he uses as a weapon so he can walk free. Even as he defeats literally EVERYONE, a hawk steals the key and forces him to live a life of eternally bad luck.

These sorts of episodes play out all over the games cast and are all pretty damn fun.

And of course, it wouldn't be a Basara game without some convoluted way for Nobunaga to get involved!

All in all, this is the pinnacle. This is what a musuo can be and its difficult to go back to Dynasty Warriors after being exposed to THIS. To the point where when I jones for the genre, I don't buy a new DW - I just pop in Sengoku Basara 3 and play with a character I haven't played with in a while.

14.) Trails in the Sky FC and SC (2011 and 2015)

Trails in the Sky was really the perfect throwback at the perfect time. It came out at the tail end of that 2000s lull in good quality JRPGs and it got there by reminding me of why I fell in love with the genre in the first place. The aesthetics harkened back to games like Breath of Fire and so did the vibrant personalities of the characters. The game wasn't trying to please everyone - it had a story it wanted to tell. The main character had a strong personality reminiscient of the better final fantasies and the gameplay was a smooth combination of tactical jrpg, turn based jrpg and the innovations present in games like Atelier Iris and Final Fantasy X to have dynamic initiative.

And then the game itself is just brimming with charm and lore. You can read newspapers, you can read the paperback fiction, you can follow the trials and tribulations of minor npcs ranging from newspaper reporters and knights on down to just random children and townspeople who happen to have names. The treasure chests all have unique text if you examine them when they're empty. This world feels alive. The culture of this world has a definite feel to it.

Each of the main characters has their own story and personality and you just end up falling in love with them (except Father Kevin). You have Estelle quoting things she learned in sunday school. Everything is just so damn relatable and living that when the bigger plot beats hit, they mean more.

15.) Rune Factory 3 (3DS, 2009)

This to me is easily the best of the Rune Factory games, which is in turn, a really fun expansion on the Harvest Moon games, done by looping RPG mechanics. Your main character is actually a sheep monster which is a fucking great concept and lends itself to his outfit with the sheep fur.

This is also the point in the series where the writers have run out of standard bachelorette ideas and so just go buck wild with crazy painters and extremely sleepy girls and its just a fantastic way to go. The cool thing about this particular game is since your sheep form is really good at fighting you are free to invest your time and energy into making things other than weapons which I like.

Anyway, I do not buy the notion that Civil Wad is cold or cynical one bit. What actually stood out to me is how much it avoids just bring a cynical cash grab where heroes punch each other and upcoming films are advertised (whereas say Age of Ultron would fall into this), because the whole thing is grounded in the feelings of the characters and the emotional consequences of their actions up to this point. It is very concerned with who the heroes are as people. Like in Age of Ultron, the smashy crashy superhero action largely left me cold, but thats also not why most people come to these movies, and this film seemed to understand that while Age of Ultron didnt. Its also why its better than The Winter Soldier, because The Winter Soldier is magnificent for most of its runtime then remembers that it needs to have a huge action climax where a thing falls over a city, while Civil War keeps its climax about the characters and the conflicts between them.

Theres literally no reason to do this movie if you dont feature Steve punching Robert Downey Jr in his smug face.

Its literally the entire appeal of the concept

I do think Wakandas aesthetic is pretty racist.

Like there are actual cities in Africa that look and feel african and African nations with modern militaries and none of them feature thatched roof skyscrapers or rpgs shaped like tribal spears for some reason.

Like Addis Ababa is a legitimately ancient city that has flourished in East Africa and it looks so fucking cool and also looks nothing at all like Wakanda.

The vision of Wakanda makes it seem like africa is synonymous with like nomadic "savage" lifestyles that exist mainly in the western imperial imagination - but its okay because theyre rich now and they continue to use MAGIC spears and MODERN thatched roof huts.

In the booming era of JRPGs there were a few games who walked off the standard beaten path of medieval fantasy or future space sci fi and earthbound was one of the better ones. This game took place in a supposedly modern setting in "Eagleland" but was a deeply weird and psychedelic take on our world with lots of bright colors and wild people who were just a bit odd and eccentric. Early on having to take on such foes as an angry hippy or to explore such random occult sites as a giant footprint.

The game had some really cool innovations too, like the rolling HP bar which rewarded speed to sometimes cut off an otherwise sure death from high HP. The game is pretty basic but the replacement of magic with psionics and the use of things like baseball bats, frying pans and bottle rockets were all pretty cool ways of showing you could do a JRPG in 90s america with no real issues.

The game is also a formative one for me because starmen.net was my first online community and thus talking about Earthbound and playing earthbound fan games was a big part of my internet childhood

17.) Shadowrun (Genesis, 1994)

I have a long history of loving games based on tabletop RPGs but this game may in fact be my favorite. See the reason why I like games like this is that the mechanics are based on rules that are easy to understand. No mysterious stats that may or may not do anything and require experimentation to deduce. They're rules you can look up and understand and build out in different ways. Shadowrun in particular - the SNES game is usually looked on with more fondness but for me this game was way way better and easier to understand and play.

The game is a top down shooter action-rpg and is a bit janky - in order to make money you can take runs on behalf of a Mr.Johnson who serves as a go between for missions. You can do generic missions in order to build up income but there was also a big overarching mission. Your brother Michael went on a shadowrun and sent you a message showing he and his team getting ambushed. He left you a few clues and his last location - a worn down dump of a motel in Redmond in the suburbs of Seattle.

You follow the story bit by bit and discover the grand conspiracy that was out to kill your brother after he saw something he should NOT have seen and its up to you, his former partner and whoever else you want to hire to come help you.

For me though, the thing that makes this game great is the atmosphere. Everything feels grimy and tense and as you are walking around doing your runs there are these random encounters you need to navigate that can make your life easier or way way harder.

18.) Castlevania III (NES, 1990)

Castlevania 1 is probably the best NES game for its early part of the cycle in terms of the way it handled and how finely turned everything about the game ended up being. Castlevania 3 takes the idea and just makes...more. Instead of one character you have multiple characters that all handle well. And the level design is much improved and more memorable than that used in the first castlevania.

The balance between finely tuned platforming and memorable boss fights make this a game I come back to time and time again and literally just played it again on PS4 not that long ago when I got the Castlevania collection.

#19 Atelier Totori (PS3, 2010)

I love the alchemy series so much and Totori is in many ways the most pure example of how the series works so well. Rorona had the overemphasis on the periodic deadlines and felt more board gamey and that was fine, but Totori opened things up some more and had a better cast.

The game features Totori, who fancies herself as an adventurer and is the student of an alchemist. Her mom was an adventurer and went missing so she figures if she becomes an adventurer perhaps she can find her mother and figure out what the deal was. Along the way her childhood friend Gino and local rich girl come and join her and she goes all over the world, using alchemy. The alchemy system is a nice blend of deep and accessible which makes the game really satisfying to toy around in.

#20 Age of Rifles (PC, 1996)

Age of Rifles is one of the more formative games for me in general, far broadening my horizons and giving me a love for historical miniatures that was a big part of my getting into the irl hobby world. And this game was basically a digital historical minis game complete with unit construction and customization.

This is in some ways less a game and more a game engine with scenarios built in detailing most major wars that took place between 1846, the year the modern rifle was first used in combat, and 1905 when the rifle was replaced with better guns. If only for its intensely dedicated civil war battle simulator aspects this would have been an incredible game but it also covers the Franco-Prussian war and the other wars of German Unification, it has the Boer Wars, it has every single one of them with real life force strengths and weapons and all of that. The game places the proper amount of emphasis on terrain features and it was really cool.

But beyond that you could customize your own battlefields and forces and try to see how these battles would play out and it was just really cool and i spent countless hours tinkering with it.

Inviso posted...
I'm sad that FFH didn't make the top ten. It was so close with that trio of 313, 312 and 306 throughout the whole compilation of the list, and I knew one of the three wouldn't make the top ten, and it's the one I ranked in third place.

Oh yeah how sad to lose your #3 at 11th place.
