I didn't want to post this during the vote, but I'm pretty sure Brett had sad that in the event of a tie, the host's vote would not count.

I don't like that approach because the host puts a lot of work into the contest. Doesn't make sense to saddle them with all the work and also disadvantage their characters. I'd rather have the host break ties in their favor than lose their vote. (Though I still think time extension is a better solution than both, for the finals of a big contest like this)

the flip side is, if you get super invested, it's more fun if you win

investment is a double-edged sword like that. I get what you're saying because I'm the same way; but by the same token, if my favorites win, I'm like "yay" and then I move on. someone like Karo probably gets way more out of it (or he would, if his stuff won)

yeah, mafia is pretty simple to understand. more simple than mercs, at least!

the basic concept of mercs is pretty simple. players build up teams of video game characters that battle each other. people can vote on which team they think would win the fight.

also, characters have special abilities they can use. like, Sub-Zero can freeze someone at the start of the battle. Little Mac can challenge someone to a boxing match before the battle, and the loser is KOed.

it gets complex from a player's perspective because there are a lot of characters and a lot of abilities that sometimes interact in weird ways. so rocket's analogy to tournament level Magic is pretty good. but all of that is "under the hood," so to speak -- you don't need to understand any of that to come in and vote "yeah Trance Kuja destroys these fools" (or whatever).
