Wow, Marshadow slander :(

Marshadow being a mythical (already a knock against it that makes Annihilape all the better) that came between Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (meaning it gets forgotten due to US/UM's new additions)...just rough.

So let's take a look at what we've got, because this is a tough call.

Gen II...even though Heracross is a GREAT Pokemon, this is hindered by Tyrogue being THE worst Pokemon of all time, and Hitmontop not being worth the trouble in terms of a third, inferior evolution.

Gen VIII has SO MUCH heavy lifting being carried by post-game content. The DLC gave us Galarian Zapdos and the Urshifu line, and Arceus gave us Sneasler and Hisuian Lilligant. Those are all great. Which the main game of Sword/Shield gave us was an admittedly cool Galarian Farfetch'd...as one of SIX (Zamazenta's base form included) monotypes and NO dual-types whatsoever.

Gen VII is unfortunate. They gave us our first Ice/Fighting, Normal/Fighting (outside of special formes), Dragon/Fighting, Ghost/Fighting, and the first Bug/Fighting since Gen II...and none of them are REALLY high tier except Kommo-o by virtue of being a pseudolegendary. Nothing sticks from Gen VII's roster.

Gen V has some stars for sure. Mienfoo/Mienshao, Scraggy/Scrafty, and the legendary trio are all solid entries. But I just think Pignite/Emboar, while not bad, are a step down from the previous two generations. The Timburr line is FAR inferior to what it's replicating, and Sawk/Throh even moreso. Plus Keldeo is awful.

Gen III has Blaziken and Breloom, both of which are amazing, top tier Pokemon. Unfortunately, Combusken's a bad design, Meditite's a bad design, the Makuhita line is kinda lame, and Medicham is okay. Blaziken/Breloom/Medicham feel like a solid foray into having a decent number of unique Fighting type combos, but it's not enough.

Gen I has a lot of quality Pokemon, with Machamp, Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan being especially memorable. The big problem I have ranking it the BEST is that of the EIGHT Fighting-types in Gen I, SEVEN of them are monotypes, so there's little diversity there.

Gen VI is a surprising one to me, because it gives some solid Megas, most of which have great designs, and three of the four new Pokemon are REALLY high tier. The only thing holding it basic is the disappointment of Chesnaught.

Gen IV is solid. It might only have four lines, but all four final evolutions are awesome, and the three pre-evos aren't terrible either (with Riolu as one of the few baby Pokemon that's actually GOOD).

Gen IX is the best. There is only one Pokemon among this number that I have no real fondness for (Slither Wing), and this generation gave us TWO Water/Fighting-types (after we'd only had Poliwrath and a mythical for the previous eight generations), a second non-legendary Fighting/Flying-type, finally completed Fighting's pairings with multiple Electric/Fighting-types, Ground/Fighting AND Fairy/Fighting, plus one of the better cover legendaries.

I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Despite having retroactive additions, Fairy didn't gain a lot of traction outside of a little bit of Gen I love. Nor did its offerings spark joy with Gens VIII or IX. No, it came down to the original, particularly with a beloved legendary and Mega Evolutions, versus the games I personally think got it right one generation later. In the end, Gen VII scored a doubling, but this was the lowest votal round thus far, so perhaps people just don't care for Fairies.

For today's contest, we're doing Fighting-types. This is my personal favorite typing, so I hope one of the generations I think did a really good job gets some well-deserved praise here. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
Dragon Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)

It's definitely not Gen IV (almost nothing except a baby and an evolution of something from Gen II), Gen V (the only Fairy is a less-than-great line), and Gen VI (holy hell for the generation that introduced Fairy-types, Sylveon is the only truly GOOD Pokemon on that roster). Gen VIII & Gen IX have some good stuff, but they also have some trash. Gen III has two stars, but also a worthless baby and Ralts. Similarly, three of Gen II's are babies, and Snubbull isn't THAT great either. So it comes down to Gen I (which I think is almost perfect except Wigglytuff is kinda lame) and Gen VII (which has more duds...but also a much larger roster.)

I've gotta go with Gen VII, because A-Ninetales, Primarina, Cutiefly, Ribombee, Mimikyu, and the Tapus are SUCH high quality, and Morelull/Shiinotic are good choices for Grass/Fairy.

Despite the usual Genwunner bias in these sorts of polls, Electric was the first typing to secure a win (or even a wild card berth) for Gen I. It didn't QUITE get a strong run for its money from Gen V, but four rounds in and Gen V has proven to have some strong defenders (except when it comes to dragons).

For today's contest, we're doing Fairy-types. It's interesting, because there are Fairies in every generation, but most generations only retroactively got Fairies added to existing Pokemon, so who knows how that will affect popularity. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. Alright, let's look at this group:

Definitely not Gen III...lame Pika-clones, and I don't care for Manectric's design.

Not Gen VI. Already talked about Manectric's design being bad, but with such a small roster, Dedenne carries too much weight.

Not Gen VIII. There's almost nothing great here except for Toxtricity.

Not Gen V. The legendaries, Stunfisk, and the Eelektrik NFEs kill it.

Not Gen IX. Bellibolt's line, the pointlessness of Pawmi/Pawmo, and Sandy Shocks bring it down.

Not Gen IV. Shinx/Luxio/Pachirisu weigh it down too much.

Not Gen VII. The Geodude line could've been much better, and Togedemaru is disappointing.

Ultimately, it comes down to Gen I having a perfect roster, while Raikou is awful (plus Flaaffy is disappointing.)

Yesterday's results started out close, but then it seems that a lot of what drew people's votes towards Gen VI were Mega Evolutions of Pokemon already beloved in Gen III. The end result was more than a doubling, as Gen VI becomes the first second-placer to not break twenty percent of the vote.

For today's contest, we're doing Electric-types. This typing has been one of the most unchanging over the years, seeming to stick with a lot of monotypes instead of pairing up to create new type combos. It's also typically the home typing of the franchise's original mascot, and all those clones that came afterwards. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Does Trump run again in 2020 if he loses in 2016? He doesn't really have the same level of scrutiny towards his actions if he wasn't the president at one point, and there's less of a drive to protect himself from prosecution by bypassing the legal system via the presidency.

Gen I's trio is perfect...but there are only three of them.

Gen II is obviously a no.

Gen III does well, but Altaria/Bagon/Shelgon aren't good enough, and Salamence is one of my least favorite pseudos.

Gen IV's legendaries are awful.

Gen V's legendaries are awful, PLUS Deino/Zweilous/Druddigon.

Gen VI has some really good mega evolutions, but some flaws, and I'm not the biggest fan of the Goodra line.

Gen VII has far more misses than hits across the board.

Gen VIII has some big misses with Dreepy, the fossils, and Appletun.

Gen IX is very feast or famine with some of the options here, especially since I'm not a huge fan of the DLC paradoxes.

Ultimately, I think I've gotta go with VI, because it's one of the most through typings that small roster has to offer.

Yesterday's results saw a much closer battle than the Bug-types, because Gen IX drew a lot of people in with the Ruin Quartet. But ultimately, it was just not enough to overcome the originator of the typing, as Gen II squeaked out a win with 18 votes to 17. Both seem like solid options

For today's contest, we're doing Dragon-types. They've long been the rare pinnacle of the Pokemon world, even if their power has ebbed and flowed over the years since the first generation. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. Yesterday's results saw Generation V reign supreme, securing the win with 30 votes, and more than doubling Gen VII as its next closest competitor. I guess it makes sense that sheer volume of options on the board would work well in Gen V's favor.

For today's contest, we're doing Dark-types. Not an initial typing (and heck, not even retroactively added to Gen I), but they've become a mainstay, especially of early routes. When You Wish Upon a Star (This is like, Disney's flagship song)
Beauty and the Beast (I would've considered Part of Your World, but apparently it didn't even get nominated for best original song, while Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl both did. Meanwhile, Beauty and the Beast is just iconic as like THE symbol of the Disney Renaissance)
Let It Go (The modern day's most iconic song, and probably the song that single-handedly made Frozen the biggest Disney property in decades)
Be Prepared (I had to give a spot to a villain song, and Lion King is the biggest Disney movie of all time...so it felt wrong not including one song from the list)

Jesus Christ, Inteleon is one of the only good Pokemon from Sword/Shield and you all still eliminated it in round one?

Cosmog is adorable and a major part of the S/M storyline. Druddigon is...not.

The Timburr line is wildly underrated. They're the Machop line for the modern generations imo

Morpeko getting eliminated is a huge surprise though

With Dedenne going out and Pawmot almost getting eliminated, it seems the Pikaclones aren't doing all that well. Which is a shame, because Pawmot is the best Pikaclone.
