I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing. The tournament has now begun. | Inviso 04/20/24 3:41:26 PM #121 | It wasn't until re-reading my write-up that I realized this: Beetlejuice takes a very similar baseline plot to Hellraiser and just does it so much better. Admittedly, Beetlejuice's opening is much longer than the quick scene of crazy shit happening in Hellraiser, but still. Supernatural shit starts happening in a house following the introductory character/s being killed, and then the next thing you know, you have a meek father, his daughter, and her redheaded stepmother moving in. The stepmother is unhappy with the situation she finds herself in, the stepfather just wants to have everything be normal, and the key difference is that the lead female is far more proactive in her involvement with the story...even before she winds up summoning unspeakable malevolence into the world.

Fright Night was a refreshing & meta take on vampire movies when it first came out, and still holds up pretty well today. It's somewhat of a parody but is also pretty damn scary, which is rare. Evil Ed reverting back from a wolf freaked me out as a kid, and Chris Sarandon plays the right blend of charming and sinister. Meanwhile Roddy McDowall's reluctant hero character is one the best 'good guys' in 80s horror. An evil car is like...the most reasonable and frightening cursed object possible. I'm curious if you specifically have a problem with an executive trying to draw in viewers with explicit content, since that doesn't sound at all irrational. At least by the standards of the time anyway. However I do know that one of the main gripes people have with that particular movie is the off-putting premise, which is also fairly standard with Cronenberg. I just think "scientist trying to make a groundbreaking invention" is much more of a straightforward and standard character than "asshole TV executive is trying to find the most violent and/or softcore porn programming possible to get ratings". The former makes for a much more rational and sensical storyline, whereas the latter has to jump through so many hoops to get from point A to B to C. It works in Scrooged because the plot is that this asshole is meant to become a better person over the course of the film. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing. | Inviso 04/12/24 5:06:53 PM #6 | In a relatively high-scoring match-up first seed Gen I Fire was kept close at the start of the round by its opponent, Gen IV Ghost. In the end though, Gen I Fire secured the win in a 31-19 result to advance to round 2.
