I'm going to switch my vote to Possession as well. While I could see Tetsuo being someone's number 2, I feel like Possession has more of that artsy flair to warrant a high placement, while also lacking a lot of the things that might make it appealing to most rankers.

I've done this style of poll contest once before, back in either Gen VII or Gen VIII, so why not try it again now? The rules are simple: each day, I'm going to post a poll for a given Pokemon typing, with each generation's roster of new Pokemon filling in that typing. You just need to look at what each generation had to offer, and select which generation you think brought the best new roster (for any reason; you could say that a single Pokemon was so good that it overwhelms everything else the generation spawned, or you could select a generation that may be more well-rounded that the one that created your personal favorite). At the end of the day, one generation will be crowned a champion (with potential tiebreakers if need be), and that generation will advance to a second round, where the eighteen winners, and fourteen strongest runner-ups will be sorted into a 32-entrant tournament to crown which generation produced the best overall roster of a single typing.

Yesterday's one-on-one contest saw another strong showing from both entrants as they fought for the final spot in the tournament, but after some early equality between the two generations, Gen IV took a slight lead, and Gen IX just couldn't make up the difference. It's a shame, because Gen IX is genuinely one of the better Ghost rosters, and if I'd just voted it instead of Gen I the first time around, it would've made the tournament.

Anyway, with all ties broken, we have our official best generation per type, plus fourteen runners-up who managed to put on a strong enough showing to earn one of the remaining slots in the overall bracket. Unfortunately, Gen II Psychic, Gen II/III Rock, Gen I/V Grass, and Gen III Ice didn't put on a good enough showing to snag spots for themselves. Thus, here are your top thirty two!

  1. Fire: Gen I (30 Votes, 47.62%)
  2. Bug: Gen V (30 Votes, 44.12%)
  3. Dragon: Gen III (30 Votes, 41.67%)
  4. Poison: Gen I (29 Votes, 50.88%)
  5. Grass: Gen III (28 Votes, 45.90%)
  6. Psychic: Gen III (25 Votes, 45.45%)
  7. Fairy: Gen VII (24 Votes, 39.34%)
  8. Electric: Gen I (24 Votes, 37.50%)
  9. Ice: Gen IV (24 Votes, 36.92%)
  10. Flying: Gen I (21 Votes, 35.00%)
  11. Water: Gen I (21 Votes, 34.43%)
  12. Ground: Gen I (20 Votes, 33.33%)
  13. Dark: Gen II (18 Votes, 26.87%)
  14. Normal: Gen I (17 Votes, 28.81%)
  15. Steel: Gen III (15 Votes, 27.27%)
  16. Rock: Gen I (14, 23.33%)
  17. Fighting: Gen IV (14 Votes, 21.88%)
  18. Ghost: Gen V (13 Votes, 17.81%)
  19. (Dark: Gen IX - 17 Votes, 25.37%)
  20. (Fire: Gen V - 16 Votes, 25.4%)
  21. (Electric: Gen V - 15 Votes, 23.44%)
  22. (Poison: Gen VIII - 14, 24.56%)
  23. (Bug: Gen VII - 14 Votes, 20.59%)
  24. (Dragon: Gen VI - 14 Votes, 19.44%)
  25. (Steel: Gen VI - 13, 23.64%)
  26. (Flying: Gen VI - 13 Votes, 21.67%)
  27. (Water: Gen III - 13 Votes, 21.31%)
  28. (Ground: Gen V - 12 Votes, 20.00%, 28-21 Tiebreak over Gen III)
  29. (Fairy: Gen VI - 12 Votes, 19.67%)
  30. (Fighting: Gen IX - 12 Votes, 18.75%)
  31. (Normal: Gen VIII - 11 Votes, 18.64%)
  32. (Ghost: Gen IV - 10 Votes, 13.70%, 26-23 Tiebreak over Gen IX)
(Psychic: Gen II - 9 Votes, 16.36%)
(Rock: Gen II/III - 9 Votes, 15.00%)
(Grass: Gen I/Gen V - 9 Votes, 14.75%)
(Ice: Gen III - 9 Votes, 13.85%)

I've put together a bracket using the above numbers as seeds, and I'm going to give a little bit of time for people to make any predictions they want to make before I start the contest itself. Note: match-ups will be 1v1, 1 per day, poll determining each day's winner. In the event of a day ending in a tie, I will cast the tiebreaking vote. Anyway, here is the bracket, so make your predictions!

I've gotta think this over now. We have 28 movies left. The next one has no entries in the top ten, I can safely remove my entire top ten from contention for elimination. That leaves 18. We also know that whatever is next got 11th place from at least one person (probably not more than that), so it has to be something that would appeal to SOMEONE'S tastes, but not so much as to make a top ten.

Now, I feel like, given just how low the score is for this movie, I'm going to make an assumption that this (and 27, which has a similar 296) wouldn't be a bigger name movie, just because I feel like some of the biggest names would inherently score just a little higher. Not necessarily saying any of those movies are good or warrant high praise...just that they're likely to get praise from SOMEONE. Especially when you consider that this list was curated by Snake, who is himself a major horror aficionado, so I have to imagine some movies received praise from him for their formation of franchises.

Next, I'm going to eliminate anything that I could reasonably consider "artsy", because there enough of the "art snob alliance" participating in this ranking that I could see several of these movies making a top ten in one way or another. This leaves me with only three potential movies on my list for what could possibly have managed to avoid EVERY top ten list for all thirteen rankers.

I look at the remaining three I have standing, and they're all more in the vein of a light-hearted sort of horror movie, which strike me as the kind of movies that could reasonably make eleventh place for one person while pissing everyone else off. And of those three, I'm more willing to let one skate at this point, just because it's possibly a nostalgia film for people of our age bracket. So I look at the last two, and I enjoyed both, but I also have a penchant for goofy nonsense that would hardly be considered high cinema...so I'm gonna change my prediction from Tetsuo to Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I hope I'm wrong and Tetsuo was too much even for the artsy crowd, but I just can't imagine anyone truly ranking Killer Klowns in a top ten.

Hint - Next up is the movie with NO top 10 rankings!

Aw, damn. Knowing you said the movie with no top tens got one 11th really makes me question whether it's my number 11. It's very possible...I could see it being a movie people hate. I still want to stick with Tetsuo, but I could also see that getting into a top ten on artsiness alone.

What's frustrating is there WERE aspects of Sleepaway Camp that were very good. The performances and protective relationship between the siblings was really endearing. Eat shit and live is a great line!

But the good aspects were completely wasted in favor of the godawful everything else

This is the biggest problem, yeah. Sleepaway Camp has some other flaws, but at least it has some fun and interesting kills for a slasher film. Burning a pedophile with scalding water; drowning a kid some his body is all fucked up when it gets found; dropping a hornet's nest on a guy in the bathroom, multiple knife stabbings through a shower curtain; chopping a bunch of brats up with a hatchet; curling iron "insertion"; arrow to the neck; decapitation. And again, all the characters that get killed are KINDA assholes who deserve it. It really IS the horrible portrayal of LGBTQ+ issues that tanked it in my eyes more than it would have placed otherwise.

It's not even necessarily the trans serial killer trope that bugs me (because looking back on it, Angela being quiet and reserved basically implied that she wanted to be left alone and didn't want to "trick" anyone, as is usually the case with the trope in these sorts of movie situations). It really is the way the writers decided to really hammer that nail in by adding scenes where the source of all Angela's trauma was REALLY seeing her father (a gay man) kissing another gay man. That stands out to me as bizarrely and unnecessarily homophobic in an irredeemable way.

Ceruledge and Annihilape are two of my favorite Pokemon from Gen IX, full stop. Them being Ghost-types is a cherry on top. Plus, you have Flutter Mane and Gimmighoul/Gholdengo as major comeptitive threats, Pecharunt as the figurehead of a fun DLC, and even Poltchageist/Sinistcha are better variants than the original inspirations.

Gen IV only really has Mismagius, IMO. Maybe Rotom and Frolass and MAYBE Spiritomb (which is still annoyingly rare). Giratina is actively bad though, so that docks points.

For today's contest, we have our last wild card to decide as the 32-seed just barely made the cut with two generations of Ghosts vying to make the top tier. Gen IV has some big names and evolutions holding its ranks, while Gen IX goes for quantity with a large number of new Pokemon among its number.

Also, I don't think I went hard enough in emphasizing how outright terrible the sound is in this movie. The screaming and groaning effects are disgusting in how they sound like a literally person watching as their childhood dog is being drowned in front of them. That's both the scream of agony from the person, and the horrific noises coming from the drowned animal. Every moment of "horror" audio in Basketcase is painful and awful to listen to, and it happens SO often, because every other seen in some sort of gruesome murder.

I've generally stayed out of this particular discussion, but I want to say a couple things here.

First off, with regards to this particular news story: I looked into news articles and despite the many blue check marks elevating horrific stories to the top of the comments section, it seems that they're not accurate.

"On 25 March 1986, Israeli forces arrested Walid Daqqah, then 24, a Palestinian citizen of Israel. In March 1987, an Israeli military court sentenced him to life imprisonment after convicting him of commanding the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)-affiliated group that had abducted and killed Israeli soldier Moshe Tamam in 1984. Daqqah was not convicted of carrying out the murder himself, but of commanding the group, an accusation he always rejected, and his conviction was based on British emergency regulations dating back to 1945, which require a much lower standard of proof for conviction than Israeli criminal law."

So, he definitively was not convicted of murder (not even considering his denial of the charges against him, because admittedly, that is not concrete evidence and it's entirely possible what he IS being held for is accurate). Yet, all of these blue check marks of Twitter (which are amplified because Elon believes more money equals more free speech) seem to be repeating the same story about horrific torture committed SPECIFICALLY by Walid. So why is that? I mean, if you don't go out of your way to read the actual backstory on the case, you're going to see all of those posts saying the same thing and believe they're true, because if everyone is repeating it, it must be a fact.

For readers like you, Nanis, the effect of this is twofold. First, repeating the same mistruth about why Walid was imprisoned paints him as a monster, and whether intentional or not, it carries with it a broad spanning implication. The message it sends is that "This one Palestinian tortured and killed an Israeli soldier, therefore it's like Palestinians want to torture and kill Israelis, full stop." So suddenly, the actions of one individual (which again, I want to stress, are not being reported accurately by blue check marks on Twitter) smear the collective. But second, and we saw this with your reaction...it creates a mindset that this person is a monster and therefore anyone defending him must either be a monster themselves, or so stupid that they're not worth listening to. It forces you to retreat back into yourself as though you're personally under attack, because these monsters and idiots keep speaking out against your country and they're evil and wrong, and it prevents you from considering anything they have to say.

Now, I understand that you are in a very tough position. I understand that Israel is a very unique country in that it was created as a haven for those who had unspeakable acts of evil committed against them in World War II, and there isn't another strictly-Jewish nation on Earth, compared to countless Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc. nations. And additionally, I understand that Israel's conscription laws mean that you had to enlist and serve in the IDF as part of your citizenship, so when you see people criticizing the actions of the IDF, that feels like a personal attack since that's part of who you are; that's part of what being an Israeli citizen is.

I feel like a lot of progressives (and I want to make this very clear to the progressives who can't seem to understand why we haven't unilaterally abandoned Israel as an ally: a lot of Americans still support Israel hardcore for a variety of reasons) see the conflict going on and feel like it's a chance to make a difference in a way that they never could with regards to American acts of international aggression. It's a lot easier to look abroad and criticize another country's actions than to get your own country to shape up...hence twenty years in Afghanistan.

It does feel like a lot of the outrage is just broadly painting Israel in a bad light, even though it's very clearly the fault of Netanyahu, who specifically propped up Hamas as Palestinian opposition so that he could appear as a strong man when he took a harsh stance against them. And recent weeks have certainly seemed to start tilting things a bit more harshly towards anti-semitism, as we've even seen islamaphobic right wing pundits getting in on the action (Candace Owens, Alex Jones). But at the same time, criticizing Israel's leadership (who ARE exacerbating the problem and have created the conditions for Hamas' rise in the first place) is not anti-Semitic. There are horrible atrocities being committed by the IDF at the behest of the the Israeli government, and the people outraged at that are feeling the same emotion you felt reading those comments about Wahid being a torturous terrorist.

Gen III (Marshtomp is pointless...definite middle evolution syndrome. Swampert...I GET the appeal, but to me, Swampert has always felt like one of the more boring final starter evolutions. Like, you look at Gen V with Seismitoad, and yes, Swampert is far superior...but it also feels like...yeah, I could see Mudkip being an early-route Water-type that evolves into Swampert just like Tympole becomes Seismitoad. Nothing about the design really stands out as special, for a starter. Nincada sucks, but at least it has a fun gimmick...it barely counts as a Ground-type though. Numel/Camerupt are both solid Pokemon overall, representing the Fire/Ground-type well. Trapinch is kinda weak and slow, but evolving into Vibrava is really cool (even if it should really be Bug/Ground or Bug/Dragon), and Flygon is a top tier Pokemon and both the best Ground-type. Barboach and Whiscash both kinda suck, especially since Swampert is RIGHT THERE. Baltoy and Claydol are pretty dumb and weak, and managed to do very little with a unique type combo. And Groundon is cool, but it's the inferior of the two box legendaries.)

Gen V (Drilbur is adorable and Excadrill is the second-best Ground-type overall. Paliptoad and Seismitoad are both godawful equivalents to Barboach and Whiscash. The entire Sandile/Krokorok/Krookodile line is amazing, and I love them all, including a middle evo. Stunfisk is extremely stupid as a gimmick, and gets upstaged by its Galarian form. Golett and Golurk are fine, but they don't do anything for me. And Landorus is the best of the genie trio (largely because of its Therian form), but it's still one of the lameass genies.)

This is a tough call, and it comes down to the fact that Flygon may be the best, but Drilbur/Excadrill and Sandile/Krokorok/Krookodile all beat out the next-best from Gen III in Numel/Camerupt/Groudon, so I have to give the win to Gen V here.

And we round out our initial contest with a relatively dominant performance from Gen I once again, with a sizable number of Water-types that allowed it to break the twenty-vote barrier. Meanwhile, Gen VII gave a strong performance to try and score second place, but ultimately, Gen III had too much Water and scored thirteen votes as a second-place finish, which bumped Psychic out of the wild card race and has at least completed our basic bracket design.

For today's contest, we still have two wild cards to be decided as there were ties, and only one typing can get an official second place berth in the tournament. We're starting with Ground, where Gen III and Gen V both managed to put in solid showings against Gen I's dominant origins, and now they're facing each other, one-on-one.

Steel ties for the lowest votals thus far, which is a shame because it wasn't a blowout like some of the other low-scoring generations. Gen III (which is not a bad choice, mind you) managed to eke out the victory after being tied with the runner up late in the voting process. Gen VI, meanwhile, comes up short on winning a generation once again, but secures one of the stronger wild card spots to bump Rock out of the wild card process.

For today's contest, we finish the main set of polls with the biggest typing, really. Water has always been a major typing in Pokemon, so much so that I couldn't even put the word "Line" alongside some of the fully-evolved Pokemon listed. So if your NFE faves aren't included in the poll, I do apologize. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Note: I will not be considering things like Dialga/Palkia's form changes in Gen VIII, as those are still technically the same in the way Giratina's form change was back in Gen IV.

Rock had a pretty standard winner with Gen I taking the prize yet again, but it wasn't a blowout, and in fact, most other generations managed to put in comparatively strong showings. Five of the other generations managed to keep things within doubling range, and we ended the round on a tie between Gens II and III (which...ew). Still, interesting results overall.

For today's contest, we have Steel, which had a slow start upon its introduction in Gen II, but it has grown by leaps and bounds since then. Fighting might be my favorite typing overall, but Steel has VERY little in the way of actively BAD Pokemon to present. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. I'm not even going to bother listing off reasoning why. I think most Rock-types suck, and I don't have a lot of reason to like this typing, so I'll at least vote for the generation that gave us my favorite Rock-type in Lycanroc. Gen VII go.

Woof, worst votals thus far for Psychic-types, but I feel like we've had quite a few blowouts in a row at this point, with one generation really taking a commanding lead and not giving anything else a chance to catch up. Our winner was Gen III, but our second place was Gen II, which is still on the cusp of not making it through as a wild card. Still three types left to cover however, so we'll see how things turn out.

For today's contest, Rock is a rough one for me personally. When I was putting together the lists, this was...not great. Maybe I'm alone in this opinion, but we'll see how people feel about the typing when all is said and done. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. 9. Gen IV (Chingling is godawful; the Bronzong line is fucking annoying; Mime Jr. is cute, but too little too late; Gallade is awesome; the Lake trio range from okay Azelf to terrible Uxie and Mesprit. This is a terrible selection, and Gallade is the ONLY good thing about it.)

8. Gen V (Victini is cute and fun; the Musharna line is cute, if weak; Woobat is cute, Swoobat is not; Darmanitan Zen is hard for me to really count here; Sigilpyh is hard for me to spell consistently; the Gothitelle line is a desparate attempt to create a knock-off Gardevoir, and it fails; the Reuniclus line is weird and fun; the Beheeyem line is completely pointless; Meloetta is just one more in a sea of too many legendaries. Nothing in this gen gets QUITE as bad as the worst from Gen IV, but it's so much monotype and Psychic/Flying filler, and nothing stands out.)

7. Gen VII (A-Raichu is superior to the original in my opinion; Oricorio P'au is the worst of the four breeds; Oranguru sucks; Bruxish is a bad design, but solid in use; Tapu Lele is my least favorite Tapu; Cosmog is cute, Cosmoem is pointless, and Solgaleo/Lunala are the coolest cover legendaries in year (possibly ever); Necrozma feels a bit takced on as a big bad. It largely comes down to A-Raichu and the cover legendaries not being enough to make up for the mediocrity of the other new Pokemon in this generation.)

6. Gen VIII (G-Rapidash line is fine, but it can't compare to the originals; G-Slowpoke/Slowking are inferior, G-Slowbro is VASTLY superior; Mr. Rime line is interesting, but kinda hard to compare to the original Mr. Mime; G-Articuno may not be as good as the original, but it's still really solid; H-Braviary is...different, but feels weirdly unnecessary as a new regional form; Orbeetle is kinda lame, but Dottler is cute; The Hatterene line is like a better version of the Gothitelle line, while still being worse than the Gardevoir line; Indeedee is dumb and pointless; Calyrex is kinda stupid looking for a DLC final legendary; Wyrdeer is a vast improvement on Stantler. There's some solid stuff here, but nothing really AMAZING, and a lot of the field is made up of regional forms, so that's a bit of a dockage of points.)

5. Gen III (I like Gardevoir, but the NFEs are only okay; I like Medicham, but Meditite sucks; the Grumpig line is adorable across the board; Lunatone looks cool, Solrock looks janky; Baltoy/Claydol feel...superfluous; Chimecho IS superfluous; Wynaut is a pointless Baby in a generation that largely avoided them; the Metagross line is solid, but Beldum is lame; Lati@s are cool legendary dragons; Jirachi and Deoxys lack the mystique of Mew/Celebi. Gen III is solid, but it's here that the NFEs really start to drag things down compared to Gen I/II.)

4. Gen I (The Alakazam line is iconic; I'm not a huge fan of the Slowbro line; I dislike the Hypno line; Exeggcute is good, but Exeggutor is a little worse; Starmie is cool, but Staryu is better; Mr. Mime and Jynx are interesting in their Gen I status; Mewtwo is the original big bad, and Mew is the original mystical. Solid overall, but again, Gen I has won so much, so I've gotta see if something else does it better.)

3. Gen IX (Armarouge is cool albeit less so than Ceruledge; Rabsca is a better Bug/Psychic than Orbeetle; the Espathra line feels...pointless I guess; Veluza is annoying in the wild; Farigaraf is a solid evolution and much-needed; Scream Tail is goofy, but better than Wigglytuff at least; the Iron Musketeers are all pretty solid, because they're largely just the Musketeers are robots; and Munkidori is...my least favorite of the loyal trio. There are some good things here, and it's largely solid overall, but just not quite good enough.)

2. Gen VI (The Megas are all largely solid except for Slowbro, but there are just SO MANY of them that it kinda oversaturates the field; Delphox is awesome for the first full-time Fire/Psychic; Meowstic is a delightful design, and Espurr's meme face is amazing; the Malamar line is quirky in a fun way; and Hoopa is solid. Really, I just wish they didn't overload on the megas here, because it could've been solid.)

1. Gen II (The Xatu line is unique and cool-looking; Espeon is the best ever; Slowking is the best of its line; Unown/Wobbuffet are a fun gimmick duo; Girafarig is okay, but it gets improved with evolution; Smoochum is somehow one of the better Baby Pokemon; Lugia is badass and the superior cover legendary; Celebi is a cute mystical. I think Gen II stands up well ENOUGH to warrant throwing it a vote, since it hasn't even placed top two yet outside of Dark-type.)

Going into this contest, I figured "Oh yeah, Gen I Fire is the most obvious winner possible." But then I saw the overwhelming line-up for Gen I Poison, and I'm not surprised by the overall drubbing on-display here. Granted, low votals compared to other rounds, but still, breaking the 50% mark is a big deal. Also, huge credit to Gen VIII securing another second place finish, and even though it got doubled by Gen I Poison, it put on a strong showing to keep itself in contention here.

For today's contest, Psychic gets its chance to shine, having started out its life as an OP monster given how broken Gen I was...to a rather quiet and unassuming spot on the type chart as of recent generations. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. I'll keep the same concept for later typings as well. Smallest votals thus far for the Normal-type, but I guess that's to be expected when it's "Normal". It's not meant to be flashy or inspire a ton of excitement. Gen I wins another tound, but the big surprise is that this is the first time all contest thus far where Gen VIII has managed to place in the top two. It's still low in the rankings, but it's on the bubble for a wild card berth with five typings left to go.

For today's contest, we're doing Poison-types. I did not realize just HOW MANY Poison-types Gen I has, but we'll see if sheer quantity has an effect on the end results today. Given Gen VI's limited roster, I have folder Mega Evolutions into their list, as those were, effectively, some of the new Pokemon created in lieu of brand new designs for Gen VI. Needle Arm ended with the right eliminations, thankfully. Flutter Mane and Rillaboom should not have received as many minuses as they did, given that Hattrem and Gulpin should've been easy targets.

How many have you seen total, out of curiosity? I've seen 28 of the shows that were in at the start, and exactly half I consider above average and would be okay saving.

It always seems crazy to me that I've watched almost 400 anime and that barely amounts to half the shows that make it into this contest, lol

7.

Damn had I been on time to my second save I could have gotten Fate

Fuck yall lmao

Same. I think I'm learning that I just have different tastes from B8, because there were five animes at the start of this contest that I've watched and liked, and three of those five are out, while the other two are the ones I've managed to save every round.
