watched Scare Me tonight

great pick for a fun, spooky night. Very low budget, just a couple people telling spooky stories in a cabin, with most of the style coming from the actors' voice acting and sound effects. Goes back and forth between horror and comedy, and Aya Cash and Josh Ruben are both excellent and totally in their element

Just watched both Babysitter movies

The first was a blast. Samara Weaving is incredible and while the movie was super cheesy I really enjoyed watching it

The second wasn't nearly as good as the first, but had plenty of laugh out loud moments, even it logically doesn't make much sense and requires suspension of disbelief more than literally any other movie I've seen (although if I'm being honest the amount they sexualized Melanie was a little uncomfortable having just watched the first Babysitter)

Pretty good! Definitely better than I thought it'd be. Reminds me a lot of Cube with its grimy industrial feel and pretty brutal violence

Just watched The Banana Splits Movie. Squeezes somewhere between decent and mediocre. It's definitely entertaining enough in it's weird, excessive violence, but also kinda feels a bit over-inspired by FNAF and feels kinda run of the mill at times

I really recommend watching it, as it's totally worth your time for Jake Gyllenhaal alone, just don't get your hopes up to high. It's a fun time, but it's definitely no Nightcrawler

a few worth talking about

The Lighthouse is so goddamn incredible in every way. Two actors, one long-established and one only recently starting to make a name for himself as a serious actor, both at the absolute top of their game. Incredible sound design and lighting design and production design and camera work. Top notch writing that is at the same time intriguing and thrilling and sureal. Bizarre and provocative imagery, the constant question of what's real and not without ever letting up for a moment. I've been thinking about this movie constantly for months now. This is pretty close to exactly what I want from a horror movie, and honestly just from a movie in general.

Doctor Sleep was one I had both high hopes and high worries for, but like Snake pointed out, I think it mostly succeeded. It's no The Shining, but that was perhaps too high of a bar for it to ever really live up to. Ewan McGregor and Kyliegh Curran were both great, and I loved the way it portrayed psychic power. The highlight for me is when both Rose the Hat and the viewers get an immediate demonstration of Abra's power. A flawed movie, but very good regardless.

Ready or Not was probably the biggest surprise for me. I feel like this admittedly gimmicky concept easily could've been another Truth or Dare, but it was just a TON of fun thanks to a great sense of humor and Samara Weaving's excellent performance.

Freaks almost fell completely under the radar for me. Can't remember where I found out about it actually, but it's definitely worth checking out if you can find it. It filled the hole that the lack of New Mutants has had for me, and nicely captures both a bizarre feeling of paranoia and a dark take on the supernatural.

The Perfection was cheesy and kind of dumb and had a lot of issues but I also had a really fun time with it.

Glass and Velvet Buzzsaw were both movies I had really high hopes for but, while they weren't bad, they both kinda missed the mark. Glass is fun as a sort of dark superhero flick but doesn't hold the same weight as either Unbreakable or Split. Velvet Buzzsaw had the benefit of an incredible performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as a loaded cast and some interesting ideas, but didn't quite follow through on the execution.

Fuck Hellboy. Fuck it so hard. Jesus Christ why the fuck would they do that. Nobody that isn't Guillermo del Toro or Ron Perlman is allowed to touch this franchise ever again. Fuck you Neil Marshall, how do you go from The Descent, to Doomsday, to two of Game of Thrones' best episodes, to this unforgiveable piece of shit movie.

Saw both Scary Stories and Brightburn this week

Scary Stories is creative and really creepy, but also kind of aimed at kids and inconsistent in tone. Overall pretty alright.

Brightburn is... kind of a waste of really good potential. It's a great concept with really dark tones and some cool action effects but it's just really, really dumb from a writing standpoint. Tons of plotholes and an unwillingness to really make the effort

Pet Sematary was a book I never really thought would translate that well into a movie, and now two movies later I still stand by that. I think it would make for a really neat Twilight Zone/Black Mirror episode, but just doesn't really have enough plot to fill the runtime, and isn't deep enough to use the time for quiet reflection. It's especially hurt by the fact that the big "twist" 2/3s of the way into the movie everyone already knew was coming because 1. the story is 36 years old and 2. it's literally in the trailer. Changing up that last 3rd doesn't really add anything of substance to what was already a substance-lite movie.

oh I never talked about Midsommar like I wanted to

Pros:
+General direction/cinematography is incredible. Seriously, between this and Hereditary, Ari Aster has some of the best camerawork of any modern director
+Production design is also top tier
+Florence Hugh is incredible
+The film manages to be eerie and disturbing despite being set almost entirely during the daytime, which isn't easy to pull off
+Surprisingly funny enough to make the whole theater laugh consistently, which I definitely didn't expect going in

Cons
-Honestly, it's pretty predictable, which is weird given how out there some of it is. None of the twists are really twists
-Ari Aster is getting dangerously close to becoming a one trick pony, given how the naked quasi-religious murder cult that causes hallucinations and lures in an unsuspecting and unwilling person to be their new leader is all stuff almost directly copied from Hereditary, and the fact that in both movies, everything is ultimately exactly what you expect it to be, playing directly into expectations instead of ever trying to subvery them just kind of left me without the wow factor that should've been here
-The deformed person has literally no significant role in the plot and is mostly just there to look creepy in trailers which just feels kind of exploitative
-Some minor moments (like Mark's face being cut off and worn, Josh's body being buried except for one leg only to be dug back up later and then burned) are just clearly done for the horror factor despite the fact that they don't make sense from the perspective of the cult

I know I'm being pretty harsh on it but I did honestly really enjoy it, largely due to the excellent acting/cinematography/design/etc. It's a flawed movie but what it does right it absolutely nails.
