1. Miami Dolphins
2. Buffalo Bills
3. New England Patriots
4. New York Jets

From an offensive perspective, this could be the last hurrah of the Dolphins as QB Sam Keller will certainly retire and LG Max Jean-Gilles and HB Jacquizz Rodgers might follow suit. After years of having a ton of depth and talent, the OL was an issue last season, but with the signing of RT Mitchell Schwartz (I was going to sign him...) and his roughly 13:1 block-per-sack career ratio, they could get even better on that side of the ball. The defense is the calling card for this team though as it hasn't finished outside the Top 10 for probably 15 seasons or so. Even for such a young unit (only three starters in their 30s), they are extremely talented, disruptive, and shut down the run and pass. They haven't missed the playoffs since Sam Keller was installed as the starter, and I can't imagine them missing it in his final season. They also probably have the best odds out of anyone to win their division, but with the Bills and Pats making major moves to close the gap, I won't guarantee it. They normally have a difficult-on-paper schedule because of usually getting a 1st-place schedule, but other than likely being the underdogs in road games against the Pioneers and Vikings, they should be favorites in every other game. I would be surprised if they don't win double digit games. While they work toward a first round bye or even the conference's #1 seed, don't forget that HB Jacquizz Rodgers is working on passing Emmitt Smith on the all-time rushing list and needs around 1500 yards to do so.

The Bills have worked hard to secure high-end talent over the years, but it has never translated to enough wins to make the playoffs. While their stars and scrubs team-building approach has on occasion been tested, they have been one of the healthiest teams over the past several seasons in terms of total injuries and games lost to injury. You can speculate if it was more of collecting the wrong players or playing under a poor strategy, but whatever it just didn't work out. Will this year be different? They brought in upper-90s OL in G Jackson and C Ryan Kelly, so their OL might be pretty decent now. QB Josh Allen had a typical up-and-down season from a QB, but I would say it was a promising campaign, and HB Todd Gurley was his usual self. This offense could climb into the top half of the league if things break right. The defense, which I am assuming won't be kept at a 3-4 or my opinion will be different, is looking promising in the front seven with Top 10 pick DE Dean Lowery. The secondary lacks the talent and production to give me any faith in it, but like the Chiefs, their schedule doesn't have a lot of heavy passing hitters. I do think the Bills are playoff contenders this season, but it will be a battle to grab a wild card.

I hate the Pats switching to a 3-4 D. A lot. When determining defensive alignment, your DL is the only thing that matters. Ignore your LBs and secondary because they are irrelevant. The Pats have two, 20-something DTs with elite makeups that they are just going to put one on the bench. DE Cliff Avril, who is an average-at-best run-defender, is not suited to take on and penetrate through multiple OL. He is a poor fit for a 3-4 D based on his skillset and production. This is a team that consistently finishes in the Top 10 on defense, including last season. There is no good reason from a football perspective to switch to a 3-4. I also do not agree with their decision to let HB Dexter McCluster walk, though they did try to get him back, especially in light of their offensive changes this offseason. Having a great, dependable in a sea of unknowns at offensive skill players at least gives you a focal point. We don't know who QB Brodie Garret is, HB Kenny Hamilton has been an exciting backup in Atlanta, but at the starting level, efficiency is critical for a HB, and if more touches will just result in a typical 3.7 YPC season from him, that's going to blow. WR Martavis Bryant coasted off his out-of-nowhere great season with the Packers a couple of seasons ago, but has been forgettable outside of that. TE Cameron Brate is a blocker and not expected to play much of an offensive role. Sure their offense is a lot more talented than it was a season ago, but how much can it really improve with the players it collected? They still have an elite OL, and while I loathe their defensive decision, I don't think it will tumble to being one of the worst Ds or anything that drastic. I would put them last, but I just have this feeling that they are going to bullshit their way a respectable record. That being said, starting the season with five straight road games and potentially playing multiple without several quality starters is something to keep an eye on if they start off slow and miss out on a playoff spot by a game.

For awhile now, the Jets have been pretty solid across the board, well maybe special teams have been lacking. They have routinely finished in the 11-19 range on offense and defense and had a positive turnover differential. They are still seeking a playoff appearance in the Abacus era, and maybe it comes this season, I don't know, but my guess is we will have to wait another year. The LB corps and secondary look great, but the DL is looking a little shaky right now with no DT really taking charge, and DE Malik Jackson not doing much against the run. Ogbah has been great at least. On offense, the receiving corps is fine while the OL has been a real bright spot. The question is at QB and HB. QB Deshaun Watson was the #2 overall pick awhile ago. He was injured most of his rookie season, and when he finally played, it was promising. Over the ensuing seasons, he has just not looked good. In S16, his passer rating was in the 50s, so last season's upper-60s mark look phenomenal by comparison. He may not have an elite group to throw to, but this is basically his last shot if I was in charge of the team. HB Joe Mixon had a very disappointing campaign after his breakout sophomore campaign in S16. The main culprit was his YPC going down by nearly half a yard. It could be a very ugly offensive season if neither Watson nor Mixon get back on track. I think the Jets have the higher floor and you could argue a higher ceiling than the Bills and Pats, but just call it a feeling that they will be bringing up the rear this year. Their schedule certainly won't help.

AFC West Prediction

1. Portland Express
2. Oakland Raiders
3. Denver Broncos
4. Kansas City Chiefs

One can argue that the Express have been the league's best team over the past five seasons. Retirements to Hall of Famer MLB John Abbate and OLB Koa Misi shouldn't stop them from adding to the cause. They are elite on offense, defense, and special teams, and they might be the only team able to claim that. Yeah, their depth has taken a little hit, but it won't be tested right away as they left the preseason with one starter injured, and he might return the opening game. They do open the season with three straight road games to playoff contenders and then their home opener is to a bounceback candidate in the Jags. If they can manage to begin 2-2 or better, then they have an excellent chance to reach double digit wins and presumably a playoff spot with the schedule being relatively weak after the initial quarter of the season.

The Raiders had the league's #30 offense last season but managed to make to their first Super Bowl behind the #1 defense. Two of their best defenders, MLB Vontaze Burfict (a former Def PotY) and SS Kam Chancellor, left in free agency, so some regression is in order on that side of the ball. The offense will likely need to see some decent improvement though. The OL was finally invested in last season, and it performed well. The skill positions are where the concerns are at. QB Gaines was great at managing the game, but with him not being much of a passing threat or talent elevator, the onus is mostly on second-year HB Chris Carson to make a major leap forward. While HBs are typically slow to reach optimal efficiency and effectiveness, it isn't unheard of to see someone break out in major way so soon (like HB Joe Mixon who then regressed in his third season last year). Even if that doesn't happen with Carson, the defense should be good enough to keep them in playoff contention. With a lot of teams that underwent major changes over the offseason, it's hard to gauge their schedule as a whole, but my first thought was that their away schedule does look a little tough.

The Broncos have just three losing records in 17 seasons and have never had double digit losses in a season. This could be a season where that streak is threatened. The Broncos have still not properly replaced LaMarcus Coker at HB and with the offseason trade of Dalvin Cook, they are on attempt #4 or 5. To say Cook has had an underwhelming career up to this point is an understatement, but he's never been injured and has seen his yards and YPC increase each season. While the Broncos OL has the talent, they haven't quite had the production of late, but perhaps in a contract year, they could see Cook have a breakout season. The question to me and what might limit their ceiling/cause their downfall is on defense though. While generally a great defensive team, they lost longtime DL studs to retirement, and they are being replaced by fringe starting talent with extremely playing history. In a run-oriented game as the one we are using for this project, the DL is the most important part of a defense, and if those two cause the defense to get gashed against the run, it could be a long season for Denver in what has recently been a pretty competitive conference. I don't think things will be grim, but I do believe that Denver doesn't have the ceiling that it has had.

The losses the Chiefs experienced over the offseason (2 prominent CBs and a SS) weren't as bad as their divisional foes, but they were important parts of this team, at least the CBs. Still, the secondary is a weakness of this team, not that their schedule has a bunch of opponents prepared to exploit that. While not in great shape, the OL is more talented than it was last season. Hopefully that rubs off on QB A.J. McCarron who was downright dreadful the final 3/4 of the season. I think his passer rating was the second-worst in the league among qualified QBs, only beating 49ers rookie Kyler Murray. Even a 10 point improvement to the below-average territory of the low-70s would be a boon to this team that has thin margins for error. They had a revolving door at HB last season due to injuries, so as long as LeSean McCoy has a healthier season, the offense should improve with a regression toward the mean with McCarron and the OL changes. I don't think it will be enough to end the league's longest playoff drought, but maybe they can avoid an all-too-common Top 10 pick.

The Depth Chart sheet should now be updated for preseason events. Please, please, please look over it 10 or however many times it takes for you to fully comprehend what you are seeing. Every season without fail, at least one person is unaware of their depth chart and makes a comment at some point asking why so-and-so player is starting or why another player isn't. The depth charts are updated every season after the postseason as the game automatically re-orders because the AI optimizes it based on preseason performance and position battles. I have nothing to do it with it, so don't ask me why. Just ask me to update it if it bothers you.

Prodeus (XS/X)

A lot of recent FPSs meant to emulate those from the 90s have done an excellent job at enhancing the feel and sound of shooting and other QoL improvements vital to the genre. Prodeus is up there among the best. The campaign is a little uneven though with its extended length (it felt much longer than the 9 hours I put it, and I feel like 4-5 is a good range for this style of game) and inconsistent levels.

AI trade just before preseason

Commanders receive:
CB Charles Ferris (82 overall, 29 years old)
WR Pat Andersen (77, 24)

Raiders receive:
WR Mack Bowden (77, 23)
CB Ken Crawley (76, 26)

I did this in the game and forgot to write down contract details for Commanders. Both teams incur under $1 mil cap penalties, and most importantly for the Raiders, they get under the cap.

Commanders had a ton of cap space and could afford to absorb more. They get a CB in Ferris who will push for a starting job or at least be a high-end slot corner, and they just had to get rid of their current slot corner and #4 WR.

Raiders do a good job at getting decent talent back at good contract figures as they had few options without doing a bunch of transactions to get under the cap. This allows them to get 1st rounder CB Levi Wallace some immediate playing time in the slot too.

Raiders understood trade parameters, financial impact, player histories, and what both teams hoped to achieve. This trade is official.

I'm not finished with it, but I do agree that some levels do feel overly long. The 15-ish minute levels that covered the first 5+ levels seemed perfect in that regard. I can't really speak too much about the death thing. I have died twice and right around where I had last hit a nexus point or whatever they're called. All progress seemed to stay after dying, so if I died in a big arena fight, I wouldn't have to do it all over again, which I of course appreciate. I still have a couple of levels to go, but I'm playing on the default difficulty or whatever the middle is if there wasn't one if that matters.

Coaching Strategies

Each user has an opportunity to alter some portions of how their team operates on the field. Here are the following categories you can change and what they mean.

Base Defense
You have a choice of 4-3 or 3-4. Under a 4-3, you start 2 DTs and 1 MLB. Under a 3-4, you start 2 MLBs and 1 DT.

Run-Pass Offense
The ratio of plays that will be run or pass plays on offense. This is on a sliding 100 point scale.

Conservative-Aggressive Offense
The ratio of plays that will be risk-averse or risky on offense. This is on a sliding 100 point scale.

Running Back Splits
How carries will be split among the top two RBs on your depth chart. This is on a sliding 100 point scale. That being said, I feel like coaches ignore whatever you put under this category and do whatever they please. That or RB2 actually refers to all HBs/FBs/QBs/WRs/TEs who may run with the ball and are not RB1.

Run-Pass Defense
The ratio of plays that will be geared more toward run-stopping or pass-rushing plays on defense. This is on a sliding 100 point scale.

Conservative-Aggressive Defense
The ratio of plays that will be risk-averse or risky on defense. This is on a sliding 100 point scale.

Trade

Packers receive:
DT Austin Johnson (80 overall, 23 years old)

Raiders receive:
SS Andrew Wingard (80, 24)

Packers will incur a $700k cap penalty to turn a $2.89 mil cap hit into a $3.90 mil cap hit

Raiders will incur a $760k cap penalty to turn a $4.66 mil cap hinto into a $2.19 mil cap hit

The Packers have a big need a DT, and while Wingard was expected to be their starting SS, there are better starting options at SS in free agency than DT, and with their cap space, they can afford to get a new one there.

The Raiders are under a cap crunch, and since they operate under a 3-4, an 80+ backup DT is a luxury they could easily part with to find a comparable talent to fill a hole elsewhere and save some money.

Both teams demonstrated that they understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories, and what each team hoped to achieve. This trade is now official.

Mass Effect 2 (XB1)

This was always my least favorite (though still an outstanding game) of the trilogy for, among many things, being a glorified interlude, and I feel like my opinion on it has fallen a little bit not remembering how tame most of the loyalty missions were.

Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly (XB1)

I wasn't engrossed with it like I was the first, but it was still a solid experience. They crammed in all of the old characters, and honestly they shouldn't have as half of them just didn't justify having any screen time with uninteresting story arcs. The new people were pretty cool though, and the returning characters that were given proper focus (specifically Jorji and Hyde) did shine.

Free Agency

See all those players in the free agent sheet? Now is the time to attempt to sign them to your team ahead of the preseason. I say attempt because you are in theory competing against the other 31 teams for the services of all available free agents.

Unlike the three offseason events involving signings, the base/desired deal that I will eventually list may not be enough to sign them, and more likely will not if it is one of the premier free agents available. If you do intend to seek out one or more of those players, you will probably want to send out a custom offer in excess of what they want, whether that means years, total money, signing bonus, or what's usually the case, a combination of the three.

You may not offer a contract to a player that goes beyond their age 34 season unless the base deal already extends beyond that. If a free agent is 31 right now and wants a two-year contract, you may go as far as four years because that would take him through his age-34 season (31, 32, 33, 34). If another free agent is also 31 and wants a five-year contract, you can offer him those five years but no more than that. Any player 28 and under is not affected by this rule as the max contract length, seven years, will take them through their age-34 season or younger.

Not every free agent is up on the sheet. I would estimate that somewhere around 20-30% of all free agents are there. The free agent sheet just lists the Top 8 and Bottom 2 at each position. If there's a certain kind of player that you are looking for that either isn't or don't know if they are on the sheet, feel free to ask me, and I will get back to you if such a player fits that description.

There will be three periods of free agency, each subsequent period spanning fewer real life days than the previous one. Here are the tentative real life days each period will last:
1st - 7 days
2nd - 4 days
3rd - 1 day

Here are some sample contract offers that I will accept, including to more simple approaches:
4 / $12.00 mil / $3.00 mil
3 years default + $2 mil total salary + $750k signing bonus
2 years default

When you give me an offer, you are offering my consent to offer the player the closest deal that he will consider, meaning that if you offer 4 / $12.00 mil / $3.00 mil and he will only consider it when it is 4 / $13.00 mil / $3.60 mil, I will offer him the latter. If that does not sit well with you, then you have the simpler options I previously laid out or you can explicitly say not to offer the contract unless he will consider those exact terms.

When you PM me the offers, I want you to include a header that says "[Your Team]'s Offers" so that I don't accidentally open them. In addition to being the commissioner, I am also in charge of the Wildcats, so there could be some conflict of interest. Thus, the best way around that is for me to not open those PMs until the deadline for the current phase has passed. I have default PM settings, so you can tell if and when I open a PM of yours. Out of fairness, I will publicly reveal my offers once the deadline has passed and before I open up any PMs.

Under no circumstances may you ask me if so and so player will consider a certain deal or anything of that nature. You may ask me general questions regarding free agency but nothing that goes against the spirit of it or give you a competitive advantage. If you do have a question and use the PM system instead of the topic or Discord, make sure that you are clear that you are asking a question, or I might not open it out of fear the PM will contain contract offers. Last season was the first time ever nobody ever violated that rule, so let's make that a trend.

There are two types of contract offers that I will immediately discard:
1. Any mentioning of the word maximum pertaining to total salary and/or signing bonus
2. A massive one year contract (possibly two-year contracts depending on the situation)

The first one I have actually received in the past. I threw it out because it is both unfair in the laziest of ways and also impossible as you can go quite high in total salary, and I do not want to spend 30 minutes inputting a single offer.

The second one is also unfair to teams with lots of cap space to maintain artificial flexibility for future seasons by using up a lot of cap space this season and then sign that same player next season to an uncontested market or below-market contract in the following offseason in a process they can repeat as many times as they can/want.

Also due to fairness, any cuts you wish to make during free agency must be done well ahead of time to give other users enough of a chance to make a bid on their services:
- 96 hours prior to the end of Period 1
- 48 hours prior to the end of Period 2
- No cuts allowed in Period 3

Most users should have been told when they signed their rookies in the spreadsheet, Discord, or via PM of their cap space and roster holes entering free agency. If I did not, feel free to consult the roster sheet and compare with the roster requirements listed in the first column or ask me what your holes are. Should free agency end with there still being holes on your roster, the AI will fill those holes for you. You do not have to be under the salary cap at the end of free agency. I will give users several days after free agency ends to do so.

One big thing that I want to add is that many positions are very sensitive to starting status relative to their rating. QBs, HBs, FSs, CBs, and several other positions have expectations to start when they are around 82 or above. If you desire to sign someone at 82+ and are not expecting them to start for you, I highly urge you to offer them a contract no longer than 2 years in length. It is possible that they might demand a trade after just one season, but attempting to sign them to a 1 or 2 year deal will significantly reduce the financial penalty you would be dealt with if having to move on from them while they are still under contract.

Really solid game that is really easy to get lost in with no local map. I found the combat to be quite snappy and stylish. For a low-demanding game, I experienced the occasional framerate drop, and the intro each time I booted the game never had its audio and visuals synced.

AI Trade #2

Broncos receive:
HB Dalvin Cook (88, 24)

Wildcats receive:
HB Kenyan Drake (87, 25)

Broncos will incur a $1.06 mil cap penalty to turn a $6.26 mil cap hit into an $8.32 mil cap hit

Wildcats will incur a $1.49 mil cap penalty to turn a $9.81 mil cap hit into a $5.10 mil cap hit

Drake was taken with the 1st rounder that the Broncos received from the Bears when the latter signed SS Derek Linde in RFA. Drake began as a backup, but in three seasons since, he has been inconsistent and constantly injured (missed 11, 11, and 7 games the past three seasons). He has 937 yards in four seasons with a career 3.7 YPC, having been benched by the in-season signings by players such as Knowshon Moreno, Giovanni Bernard, and Melvin Gordon. This is a change of scenery trade for both parties, but especially the Broncos who get a healthy but similarly inefficient HB in the final year of his deal that they can easily walk away from.

The Wildcats had fully intended on letting Cook ride out his contract and hoping that his incrementally improved play (yardage of 350, 812, and 1098 and YPC of 3.2, 3.4, and 3.8) could continue upward with an overhauled OL. Unfortunately, all the wheeling and dealing by the team left with them a large draft class that semi-ruined their free agency plans. The best solution was to save cap space by trading disappointing HBs in hopes that a change of scenery is what they needed. Drake's injury history and ineffectiveness was previously mentioned, but he does have higher highs in his career. The risk-reward was acceptable enough to move ahead and make the trade.

Wildcats understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of players involved, and what each team hoped to achieve.

AI Trade #1

Buccaneers receive:
HB James Connor (81 overall, 25 years old)

Wildcats receive:
ROLB Bobby Cameron (78, 23)
LE Travis Holcombe (72, 23)

Buccaneers will incur a $960k cap penalty to turn $4.97 mil in cap hits into a $3.96 mil cap hit

Wildcats will incur a $710k cap penalty to turn a $4.67 mil cap hit into $4.27 mil in cap hits

Both teams had excess as the respective positions that they traded and needs at what they received. The Buccaneers avoid a potential Knile Davis "problem" by acquiring a decent backup HB that probably won't get in the way of Alvin Kamara. The Wildcats are trying to clear some cap space for free agency and get a little bit of savings while filling in multiple holes. Each player has been in the league for two seasons strictly as a backup, so their limited playing time wasn't really a factor in this trade.

Wildcats understood the trade parameters, financial impact, histories of players involved, and what each team hoped to achieve.

It seems like they put a lot of effort into art and crafting an atmosphere, but the game is very vanilla. They had a segment toward the end that could have great, but they removed all control from the player. The last chapter was when they finally did some interesting things, but they should have done more all along.

If Found...(PC)

I don't know, this is a weird one to evaluate. I really liked the presentation, but I found the mechanics of moving on with a scene to be tedious at best. I really did not like it when they wanted me to move the screen around and try to guess just what the hell they wanted me to do exactly since it changes and is seldom intuitive. I probably should have checked with their settings to see if there was an accessibility option relating to this, but the non-eraser cursor was shockingly small and in many cases dull to where I struggled to locate it. I can't be the only one who experienced that. It was more of an issue with menu-based stuff, but I found that odd and frustrating.

They've been a little light on depth as a whole for a few seasons, which has reared its ugly head with late season collapses, but this is a strong class to me. Lindsay is of course the headliner, but Wagner is worth monitoring given the Cowboys' history of rotational DTs becoming future starters (Dominic Lee being the most famous) and the advanced age of their current star duo.

Jacksonville Jaguars
HB Marlon Mack (20th overall)
C Darryl Walker (41st)
DE Mario Wasserman (73rd)
DT Cody Vuong (105th)
TE Irv Smith Jr. (106th)
QB Ivan Martin (137th)
WR Aaron Henley (169th)
C Wally Smith (201st)

The Jaguars too have suffered late-season collapses to end up outside of the playoffs. It is unlikely that this draft class will have an especially high impact right away, but there's a lot of future appeal here in regards to Mack, Wasserman, and Vuong. Walker and Smith Jr. are expected to be Week 1 starters, and C and TE are positions that are more prone to volume-based development, so they could quickly rise up in rating before the end of their contracts. Every year there's some Day 3 interior OL chosen that make their mark and have a long career as a journeyman or starter, so Wally has some appeal. Given the Jags are one of the more loyal organizations around, Wally's odds of sticking around may be higher than most.

Mexico City Browns
OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (8th overall)
G David Edwards (55th)
CB Barry Hilliard (109th)
WR Chris Smith (112th)
MLB Antonio Barber (119th)
HB Jason Moss (151st)
G Matt Jackson (183rd)

Since there are certain teams that I don't put under consideration or this list, there really isn't a third team that I feel strongly positive toward. I suppose the Bengals, Bucs, or Dolphins would be my third pick, but I'm guessing people would rather see a second user team here, so I'm going with the Browns.

I really like the trade up and selection of Van Ginkel. If they would have stayed put, the OLBs, SSs, and TE Fant would have been gone. I think that the best player for the team at that point would have ironically been the player the Wildcats selected with the same pick, DT Maliek Collins. Instead, they get a blue-chip prospect and with the additional picks they got from the trade, they selected CB Hilliard and WR Smith who will compete for slot duties at their respective positions. They won't be counted on to do the most important work, but they could get some valuable playing time as rookies. MLB Barber is the sleeper here as someone who will either start alongside a great LB group or will get plenty of rotational work behind reigning MVP David Harris (who is 33). Depending on what the Browns plan to do in free agency, Edwards could compete for a starting G spot along with 2nd-year player Jack Driscoll who disappointed with 4 blocks and 3 sacks allowed in limited time.
