Fifth Round

Pioneers OT Alex Moes (154th overall) - There are plenty of 4-3 rotational DTs, backup interior OL, and a backup MLB here. Odds are some of these will be re-signed. One or more may end up becoming future full-time starters. I don't feel like throwing a dart and guess who among them would have the best odds. Instead, I will go to Moes who will play for a great offense and under a very good OL where he is currently the only backup OT. What his rating is, who the Pioneers sign to fill out the final spot (they could even sign multiple!), and what kind of preseason battles there may be could make this shoutout moot. As things are currently constructed, RT Reggie Harris is an oft-injured starter and Moes could end up first in line to take over the spot. We could have a surprise RotY candidate or a future Breakout Player of the Year in Moes.

Sixth Round

Jets SS Kirk Smith (172nd overall) - If you want a SS who has higher odds of being developed into a future starter somewhere, the Raiders and Steelers took a SS this round and have history of that happening at least once. The Jets however, just had their backup SS lead the league in INTs, and Smith is going to fill that exact role. Performance > ratings, so I'm inclined to roll with Smith purely for what his predecessor did.

Seventh Round

Broncos TE Hank Rice (210th overall) - I will avoid the easy answer of the Packers P selection as they have the clearest path to playing time and Pro Bowls. Backup TEs tend to not stand out and if they are ever signed to a second contract, it's usally with another team as the beginning of a journeyman career. Orcas TE Joel Albright had an obscene rookie year as a 7th round rookie, and that translated to becoming the starting TE for a Super Bowl champion. The likeliest, best-case scenario for Rice is the journeyman career. However, his scouting report suggests that he could be a decent offensive weapon and blocker, not unlike incumbent and two-time Pro Bowler Dwayne Allen. Allen is 34. If there is the potential for one of the 7th round rookie TEs to be re-signed and eventually be promoted to full-time starter, I like Rice's odds.

Fourth Round

Jaguars TE Irv Smith Jr. (106th overall) - Like with their 2nd round C, the Jags may very well have plans to grab a starter in free agency for all I know. I am operating as if Smith will be the starter though. Irv Smith Jr.'s scouting report made it seem like he could be a good blocker and a decent pass-catcher. Two such players who fit that mold went on to become 2/3 of our TE Hall of Famers, including former Jag Brent Celek. Now the QB play and passing game as a whole has been pretty weak for awhile, so it is very possible that Smith's apparent skill set might not translate into production and impact for awhile or even at all. If that area improves, they get be getting a poor man's Celek, which the Jags would certainly be pleased with.

Browns MLB Antonio Barber (119th overall) - If the Browns run a 3-4, Barber becomes a starter alongside MVP David Harris, one-time Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander, and Top 10 pick Andrew Van Ginkel. If they run a 4-3, he will be the backup to a 33-year-old MLB with plenty of snaps coming his way, likely alongside Kwon and Ginkel. It's a win-win scenario for Barber, and with MLBs, along with SS, being easier defensive positions to develop lower-end backups to a fringe-starter rating, Barber could have a long future as a starter or backup ahead of him.

Honorable Mention
Eagles QB Tiki Tucker (120th overall)

Third Round

Titans HB Ito Smith (68th overall) - Ever since Melvin Gordon started getting injured after carrying the ball more than 1000 times across his first two seasons, the Titans have had backups get plenty of snaps each season, including former FB Alexander Armah having 100+ carries in each of the two previous seasons. With the Titans' backups from a season ago, as well as Armah, gone those touches will likely go to Smith more than anyone. Every season, you see some 2nd-4th rounder, not specifically a rookie mind you, get an opportunity and run with it and become the starter there, somewhere else, or become a quality journeyman injury pickup. I just get those vibes from Smith.

Dolphins G Mitch Winfield (91st overall) - With the depth of the Dolphins OL nowhere near where it was even just a couple of seasons ago, there's no obvious successor to the 38-year-old Max Jean Gilles. That player might not be on this roster, but if Winfield is that guy, he could be playing opposite of Laurent Duvernay-T, whose outstanding career includes five Pro Bowls in six seasons and nearly 10 blocks per sack allowed, as well as right next to a starting C whom the current and previous players at the position have recorded 129 blocks vs 11 sacks allowed the past three seasons. While he likely would be blocking for a QB and HB who aren't Sam Keller or Jacquizz Rodgers, I really like the recent history of this interior OL to think it will still be highly effective in the future.

Honorable Mention
Falcons MLB Marco Wilkins (83rd overall)

Second Round

Jaguars C Darryl Walker (41st overall) - Now the Jags are planning to be players in free agency to some degree. Whether that means they are planning to target a starting C is unknown to me, but for the purposes of this side project, I'm assuming that Walker will be the Week 1 starting C. The Jags have always had strong play from the position, with their most famous performer being the new Hall of Famer Kyle Young. Walker would be coming into a strong OL unit helping block for a HB group that just added a 1st round talent and already employs Eddie Lacy who is coming off of a career-best 4.3 YPC season. If they can get that passing game figured out to where they are around a league-average unit, this could be a sneaky great offense, which would help his development. The Colts last season had a highly-drafted rookie C start for them, and he ended up out-performing their rookie LT and helped the offense end up in the top half of the league after years of being toward the bottom. Walker could make that sort of impact as well.

Jets DT Harrison Phillips (44th overall) - With the retirement of Charles Alexander, one of the last remaining players from the Fenny era, the future for the interior DL of the Jets is wide open for the taking. While he should be competing for an immediate starting job, Phillips can make an impact as a rotational DT for a team that tends to have one of the better outputs from that role. That could give him enough of a developmental boost to increase his chances of getting starting opportunities for an underrated defense.

Buccaneers OT Greg Little (47th overall) - Once a team who OL really struggled outside of Orlando Franklin, the OL has been one of the better performers the past few seasons. With retirements and a trade, the depth is really thin for this team that has been on an upward trajectory. Enter Little who could very well wind up being a swing OL for a young but talented and highly-drafted offensive skill group. While OL are no longer the safest pick to draft high, I feel confident about Little's chances to play well and make an impact no matter the role.

Honorable Mention
Cowboys OLB Sione Takitaki (46th overall)

First Round

Bills DE Dean Lowery (7th overall) - For a team that has spent a lot of resources on high-end defensive players, the defense hasn't really come together despite some great individual seasons, including a co-MVP from MLB Paul Worrilow. With the caveat that Madden-generated era DEs tend to not be as complete players as those from the import era, I like the potential of Lowery having an impact on a largely stout front seven with questionable starting DEs. Historically the best rushing division of the past 10 or so seasons, the AFC East might be more in the middle this upcoming season, so this could be a good starting point for Lowery as he hopes to help the Bills get over the hump and compete for a Wild Card spot.

Cowboys HB Phillip Lindsay (14th overall) - I mentioned this in the doc where I made every pick in the first round, but the lack of playoff appearances for the Cowboys in recent seasons is strongly linked to how poorly they have been in the running game. Time is running out for their DL and QB Cam Newton. HB Devonta Freeman has played in 17 of 32 games in his two seasons with Dallas. While HBs tend to have slow starts to their career in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, it isn't impossible by any means to have a high-impact rookie season at the position. Should Freeman get injured yet again, I have more faith Lindsay making impact than most rookie HBs. Even if a playoff appearance doesn't come to fruition this season, the only other HB the team took in the first round went on to make the Hall of Fame.

Bengals WR Kenny Golladay (17th overall) - This offense has been elite the past two seasons. With the retirement of Josh Briscoe, the #1 WR job is wide open. I'm assuming that Golladay's rating will be high enough to trigger a battle for the #1 spot. If it is, and he wins, he could thrive as a mere rookie and eventually find himself as one of the best WRs in the league at some point in his career.

Honorable Mention
Browns OLB Andrew Van Ginkel (8th overall)

KCF's Favorite Picks

I'm going to go through each round of the NFL Draft and highlight my favorite picks and explain why. For the most part, I look in the early rounds for perfect team fits based on historical production, a visible succession plan to a successful starting job (or immediate starter), players who might be the missing piece to the puzzle, and selections that just make me think, "That guy's going to have a long, productive career somewhere." For the later rounds, I look for players who most likely have a chance of sticking around for a long-ish career for a myriad of reasons. While I do know some of the rookie ratings due to user signings, ratings were not a factor in my analysis nor were players dropping further than expected draft slot.

Changing up how I did things in previous years, I'm no longer doing a regret pick (perhaps just for this draft). I'm doing the normal three for the first two rounds, but I'm lowering it to two each in rounds 3 and 4, and one for each of the final three rounds. Maybe I won't be spending hours doing this with the reductions.

KCF has beaten DOOM Eternal

After mostly getting used to the new mechanics, I really enjoyed this one a lot. Having played the reboot before though, I definitely prefer the first and certainly appreciate it even more. It is just disappointing to have such a high-octane game lose its momentum when I'm forced multiple times a fight to seek out the fodder amidst the chaos to chainsaw for ammo. If Id does make another game in this style, I do hope that they find a better balance to keep the game flowing.

Signing Draft Picks

Quite a few teams have done it already, but now's the time to get those draftees' signatures and have them suit up for your squad. It is essentially just like signing your own free agents, but you don't have to worry about holdouts/franchise tags, and you typically have far fewer players to sign.

There are a few things you need to keep in mind as you read your PM. One, you will not know the overall ratings until they are signed. That is an in-game mechanic and not something by my design. Two, the desired deals for each player, in terms of length, is based on where they were taken. It is as follows:

Top 5 - Six years
6-10 - Five years
11-32 - Four years
2nd-4th rounds - Three years
5th-7th rounds - One year

Once again, you do not have to offer them their exact deals and can change their length, but I advise you to sign them to the length that they ask for because if you change the length, they might ask for considerably more money.

The deadline to sign your rookies will be Monday, May 1st at 8 PM ET. Should you idle, I will sign all your rookies to the deals that they are asking for (such a severe punishment I know). If you have roster space issues, then I will prioritize players who will fill roster holes and then in descending order of when they were selected until your roster is filled.

Eagles trade #2

Eagles receive:
DE Quinton Coples (84 overall, 27 years old)
Wildcats S19 2nd round pick
Giants S19 2nd round pick

Wildcats receive:
Orcas 1st round pick (32nd overall)
Eagles 3rd round pick (88th overall)
Eagles S19 5th round pick
Eagles S19 6th round pick

Eagles assume a $3.63 mil cap hit

Wildcats incur a $2 mil cap penalty to wipe out a $4.63 mil cap hit

The Eagles who were slated to enter the draft with less than $15 mil with five roster holes and eight draft picks, including six on Days 1 and 2, increase their cap space while cutting roster holes and draft picks with these two trades. They also bring in multiple starting-caliber players, giving them a lot more flexibility during the draft. They also add two Day 1 picks in the next draft.

The Wildcats, taking a page from their GM's playbook with the Orcas, have decided to get their young talent in this draft and punt the next one for financial reasons, so they trade two Top 100 picks to get two this season (and a pair of Day 3 picks next season), and ship out a decent but not critical starter for them that may open up additional free agency opportunities as they hope end the league's second-longest playoff drought (haven't made it since S6), sooner rather than later.

Both teams understood the trade parameters, financial impact, Coples' history, and what each team hoped to achieve. This trade is now official.
