AER: Memories of Old for PC

This could vie for my most pleasant surprise of the year (I know it came out last year, but I'm talking about games that I have first played this year). It does have some glaring flaws. The footwork is Wind Waker levels of bad, and while the game overall does a good job at providing visual cues to point you in the right direction if you get lost, the lack of labels on the map and no map while inside a place can get frustrating in the labyrinthine temples, or whatever they are called.

That being said, I just loved the mix of exploration and flight. Combine it the excellent sound design, musical transitions, and minimalistic story that uses a combination of environmental and expositional story telling, and you have a very compelling game that never overstays its welcome.

Subsurface Circular for PC

I don't know if the ending was some sort of social commentary that flew over my head, but it came across as the unintentionally hilarious version of the SNL skit Doppelgangers.

I wish that the puzzle elements were more pronounced and it wasn't so linear, but it was a good time for the two or so hours that I spent with it.

1979: Black Revolution for PC

Choices I suppose:
1. Revolutions are sacrificial

I have mixed feelings. Sure, it was a character-driven game that shed some light on Iranian culture (I personally found some family dynamics to be fascinating), but I was under the impression that the game was supposed to bring further awareness to the historical socio-political climate of 1970s Iran. I never felt that it did enough to enlighten the audience of what that was like for native Iranians.

I can forgive the technical shortcomings, but there were many plot holes and some laughably bad scenarios. How can one take the scene where you fight the goon in the old movie theater seriously at any level? Later on in that same area, you were forced to tell Abbas who you thought the mole was among a half dozen or so characters that said two lines before. What's up with that?

Still, I was invested in it from start to finish, and the vocal performances sounded great to me.

Hidden Folks for PC

I expected an homage to Where's Waldo and what I got was an homage + light puzzle elements. I was very impressed overall with the animation and sound being incredible. I had no idea that the last theme was DLC, so I was a bit surprised that I ended up finishing it earlier than I expected.

Last level was kind of bullshit. You were almost guaranteed to fail a bunch of times before figuring out what to do. That being said, I liked this on-rails rhythm game for its uniqueness.

A really good use of $.50 in my Steam wallet. I like these sort of games that resemble to old Marble Madness games. It was very difficult, but I even got three stars (max ranking) on a level or two!

Last Knight for PC

My interest quickly wanned, but it was short enough that I just kept with it. I liked the goofy part toward the end where I could repeatedly kick a bunch of no-name soldiers I think into the lava for no apparent reason.

Final boss was pretty bulls*** but hooray for Holly! Tough game throughout but such a satisfying feeling to beat it. Had never played a twin-stick shooter before either, so this was a fun introduction to that genre.

Do you have any tips for Venom? I started playing this last night, and I pretty much just use Holly and Aubergine for non-boss levels, but the boss levels have very little margin for error, so I feel forced to use a character with a high rate of fire and DPS. The closest I have come was with Cactus as I made it to its final form before running out time.

I'm about 95% sure in the sequel that you can put the cursor over an enemy and press a certain button to get a highlighted range of their movement and by extension their physical attack range.

I'm 100% certain that is in the first Shining Force. I've only gone through the second game once, so my recollection might be a little hazy for that, but I'm pretty sure that feature carried over.

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter for PC

The exceedingly long waves of enemies got obnoxious after awhile, prompting me to change the difficulty to easy so I wouldn't lose interest. That being said, I like games that take pages from the old Doom and Wolfenstein games.

I was actually supposed to beat this game a month ago, but I guess there's a common glitch that freezes the final boss fight, and I had to wait until today to be able to validate the game files to fix it.

Super Time Force Ultra for PC

I have absolutely no intentions of going back to get all the medals/collectibles, but it was a blast that I would highly recommend! I also really appreciated its silly humor, especially at the end when they used over a dozen expressions/idioms that contain the word "time" in it.

Despite the hectic nature of having to rewind time to take care of enemies and obstacles before the deadline, everything is pretty straightforward, but I was hung up on the final boss forever, and I have two recommendations that makes things so much easier:

1. Use Lou Don Jim for everything with the robot except the head to ensure that you have at least 20-25 seconds for the final phase.
2. Use Repeatski for the final phase or you will likely run out of time or even rewinds.

Orwell: Keeping An Eye On You for PC

Knocked this out in about 3-4 hours across two days. While the presentation does have some design issues (unlike Her Story, it is very hard to keep track of all the different info and sources, and you have to make decisions on top of that), but the aesthetics portion of the presentation are top-notch and easily sucked me in.

I knocked this out last night in about two hours. I was kind of surprised that this game encouraged save scumming, but I eventually got into a rhythm to where saving every other room became second nature. This is apparently a prequel to a game that has been on my wishlist for a long time, so I should probably buy that soon.

This one took me by surprise. The "Heist" part of its title is a misnomer, but this was a great turned-based tactical game.

2064: Read Only Memories for PC

I gave away a spare key to this game about a month ago, which finally convinced me to play it.

It is an interesting story filled with some interesting, if underutilized, characters, but I wouldn't say that it was fun to play. That might sound weird given this is a point-and-click adventure, which is already limited in the gameplay department. However, 90s era LucasArts and Humongous Entertainment as well as 00s era Telltale managed to make some super fun games in that genre, so I don't know what to tell you. The extremely small amount of puzzles might have something to do with it.

Retro City Rampage for PC

I actually own and have played this for three systems, but I never made a concerted effort to actually beat it until a few days ago. I remember this game being hyped a little prior to its release and was deemed to be disappointing after it came out. It gets a little irritating at the end, and I am was never fully comfortable with shooting controls and mechanics, but I ultimately enjoyed myself.
