Eh, it's about how I remembered it: not amazing, but better than people say. 4-2 has an irredeemable day 1 and 4-3 is a slog pretty much the whole way through. On the other hand, 4-1 is great and 4-4 is pretty underrated (or over-hated?)

This game is still so ridiculously good.

Next up is Apollo Justice which I'm half excited to replay and half dreading. I remember liking it the first time I played it but it definitely didn't stand up to the original trilogy. Guess we'll see if I still feel that way years later.

This game kinda disappoints me every time I play it. 2-1 is the worst case in maybe the whole series, 2-2 is just okay, 2-3 is, uhhh better than people say but that's about it, and even 2-4 is weaker than I remember it being (ugh that stalling on trial day 2). Plus a weird amount of typos, when the first game had few-to-none. Definitely one of the weaker games in the series.

This is where I stopped last time I tried to replay the series but maybe I'll make it through T&T this time, at least.

New Pokemon Snap (Switch)

The final illumina Pokemon and its stage were kind of a letdown, and even though I expected nothing from the story I still went "that's it?" at the finale. Otherwise I have been enjoying it.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch)

Both of these are pretty good. 3D World's actual platforming mechanics feel kind of loose, and my solution to that was to play as Peach most of the time because her float lets you jump so much more precisely, but she's so broken that it's not really a good solution. I unlocked the really, truly final world but haven't beaten it yet, and I'm almost definitely not going to beat every level with every character, so 100% is probably out.

Bowser's Fury I think I liked more even though it's much shorter. Fewer bottomless pits and a bigger reserve of power-ups compared to the main game make the platforming feel a lot tighter even though it actually isn't. I might try to 100% this one. Also the aesthetics are a lot better here! I long to live in a world where everything is cats.

Touhou Luna Nights (Switch)

I started out really loving this game, but it ended up just being okay. It's pretty short and not much of a Metroidvania (though it's all technically one interconnected world, it's broken up into fairly linear stages). I think the obvious comparison is Timespinner, another Metroidvania with time stopping powers. At its best (which is mostly the boss fights), Luna Nights is better -- it uses the time stopping gimmick more often and to better effect. On the whole I think Timespinner is a better game, though.

Hollow Knight (PS4)

This was a replay, I've already beaten the game (and done nearly everything in it) on Switch. I think I prefer that version just because the PS5 controller's d-pad isn't great. Nice to pick up some trophies here though, I guess.

Despite a few flaws, Hollow Knight remains one of my favorite games.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon (via Spyro Reignited Trilogy, PS4)

Definitely better than Spyro 2, definitely still has a lot of the same issues where it pauses the actually fun gameplay to make you play some shitty minigame/vehicle segment. At least the Sparx/Agent 9 levels were decent. I did 100% this one but it was right on the edge of being not good enough for me to bother; the awful skateboard sections alone nearly made it not worth it.

Overall I'd say:

Spyro 1: 9/10
Spyro 2: 4/10
Spyro 3: 7/10

I'm glad you liked it more than I did! I definitely went in hoping to be impressed (because I liked Spyro 1 so much) but that didn't last long. The hockey minigame in Colossus was about when I turned against it.

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (via Spyro Reignited Trilogy, PS4)

So this game sucks. Spyro 1 felt awesome and timeless. This feels like something made a decade later by a lesser team that fails to understand why the original was good. I kind of can't believe this was the direct, immediate sequel to Spyro 1. I'd rather play Spyro on the GBA!

Also, not really a knock on its quality but even as someone who likes (prefers, maybe) all-ages games, this just felt like a kid's game. Between the slapstick "humor" and the dumbass NPCs it was almost embarrassing to play.

I was planning to 100% this whole trilogy but I'm definitely not 100%ing this game. I think I could tolerate getting all gems/orbs and all achievements, but the skill points are too much for a game I don't like. We'll see how Spyro 3 is, whenever I decide to get to it. Sorry if I'm bashing anyone's favorite game here!

Glad I finally got a chance to play this, since I never had it as a kid. Love the fast-paced gameplay, 100%ing some levels was pretty unintuitive though (looking at you, Tree Tops). The flight levels kinda suck.

Smoldering Air and Cold Embrace are worse than not having a boon, full stop.

Sweet Nectar is cool but I never get it early enough to really get any mileage out of it.

Parting Shot is weird in that I'm not entirely sure how it works? My understanding is that it's actually a buff to your Cast all the time, even when not hitting the enemy's back, it's just a buff based off your backstab bonus. Sooo if that's true it's actually pretty good, but I rarely end up with Cast builds, so it's still not my first choice.

Heart Rend, Low Tolerance, and Curse of Longing are all fine. I think I get the most use out of Curse of Longing.

The voice acting is average to terrible. Hopefully this is just because it's a demo and they're going to re-voice these lines for the final product, because it is bad.

This was my takeaway from today's Direct as a whole -- this game, Monster Hunter, World's End Club, I might be forgetting some even. I think Hades has me spoiled for good voice acting because yeesh

Very fun game, although after the first five or so escapes every run started to feel pretty same-y. I love the characters and the writing but think the plot is pretty weak, especially compared to Bastion (and to a lesser extent Transistor).

Brock's theme was my favorite growing up, and it turned out to be Viridian City, my favorite song of the bunch, too. I actually didn't even know about the Pokemon CD's existence until like 4 years ago and now I have a few of the songs on my main Spotify playlist, just from Pokemon Puzzle League nostalgia.

Oooh yeah, Viridian City was my other favorite one (and definitely the best of the actual songs)! I couldn't remember whose theme it was though
