I didn't vote, but if I had done FFX, MGS2, Persona 4, Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter and Valkyria Chroncles would have been my top 5. FFX nails its climax and ending story beats, and has a superbly realised world. Don't think it's story is told quite as well as MGS2, but it's a cleaner landing. MGS2's ambition is towering and while it could have used some editing, it packed a massive punch. P4 is more about the characters but I've rarely been so absorbed by such a long game. VC is gentle but lands its big punches - enjoy the characterisation of the two leads a lot. I found BoF:DQ utterly absorbing - love the claustrophic atmosphere, sparse presentation and Ryu's quiet rage.

I might have given a vote to Shadow Hearts 1 - enjoyed it much more than Covenant for reasons I can't fully explain. Yuri Hyuga just bossed it. Others I would have thought about would be: Majora's Mask, The Last of Us, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. FFVII, PW3, DMC3.

GTAV - GTA online free at PS5 launch
Gran Turismo 7
Spiderman
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart - looked very cool, has a girl ratchet
Project Athia
Stray - artsy game
Returnal - looked like a serious TPS
Sackboy: A Big Adventure - platforming was foregrounded, not building levels
London Thunderground - car combat
Kena - Bridge of Spirits
Goodbye Volcano High
Oddworld Soulstorm
Ghostwire: Tokyo
Jett: The Far Shore
Godfall
Solar Ash
Hitman 3
Astro's Playroom
Little Devil Inside
NBA 2K21
Bugsnax
Demon's Souls
Deathloop
Resident Evil 8: Village
Pragmata
Horizon: Forbidden West (looks like it has Mumakil)

Controller has in-built microphone + headphone jack.
Digital Edition comes with HD camera, media remote, headset, charging dock.

I probably missed something and didn't take a note of expected dates.

I really liked the look of Oddworld and REVIII. I'm sure some of the smaller games will work out.

I found 5C really fun even though I died 100s of times. The epitome of enjoying failing over and over again, which I agree Celeste is probably the only game I've ever played where for almost the entire time playing it, I reall didn't care if I messed up or not. I think the super OST continuing uninterrupted really helps.

The only thing that really frustrated me was the analog stick sometimes while jumped - it needs to do so much (minor adjustments in her flight, and set up directions for jumps, sometimes in polar opposite directions in immediate succession) that it's easy to dash in the wrong direction.

That section almost beat me. Took me a similar number of tries and almost an entire day trying it. There wasn't even any one jump I struggled with in particular... just the whole thing. So satisfying to finally nail it. If you've already done 5C there's nothing left that's on the same level other than Chapter 9, which isn't require for the Plat (8C's final section is long, and keeps it's trickiest bit right till the end, but once you learn the timings it's actually quite forgiving).

I actually clocked up the most deaths on 3B (c.1400) because I did it immediately after completing 3A (without doing either of the earlier B-sides). The soundtrack to that level was worth listening to for hours on end though.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot 3C. I got insanely lucky with the jumps off Oshiro's head on like my 20th try.

Yeah when your year's GOTY gets dunked by a lovely little indie that could you really suck and should be ashamed. 2014 basically split the decade in two and helped me lose some interest in gaming for a while (I'm not really fan of WRPGs in general, especially if they are particularly generic.

Wolfenstein and Ori were two of the best games of the decade though. Gaming always finds a way!

I really would love to know how you all knew, because I don't think that Sonic 2 loss was some SFF beating.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/7514-whats-your-all-time-favorite-2-game

Really hard to take a game to lose a match when it has a recent direct win against its opponent (especially if you think Valve is going to get more "respect" than Rockstar. Obviously there's tons of LFF in that poll, but HL2 was in there too and RDR2 still wasn't close. Enough for me!

The Witcher 3's performance against Odyssey was so good it immediately turned B8 from viewing one half of the bracket as strongly favoured - based on solid match history - for Skyrim to leaning TW3. It was so good it actually took a lot of excitement out of the contest - not many R1 blowouts from non-favourites are capable of that. I guess we've all got better at knowing when a performance really is worth a big adjustment in our expectations (as opposed to a fun but ultimately trivial blowout like Mario Galaxy 2). Makes it a shame we never got to see it go against Smash or (the other) Odyssey, but no way Allen could have known it was going to have grown into a bona fide monster.

And Ori's performance was my favourite moment of the contest. I had it down as 60/40 for Dragon Age, and thought that would have been a pretty respectable showing. GoodTasteFAQs on show.

Edit: And Vice City was absolutely hilarious. Ken Rosenberg, Vercetti, Cortez, that rock band, Maurice Chavez. Very well written. GTA3 & SA had quite serious vibes much of the time though.

I was genuinely pretty shocked FFXIII didn't make it in. It was obviously underwhelming, but it was still a huge release and quite a few people who persisted with it till it opened up ended up enjoying the hunts (I was certainly one of these, and ended up getting the Plat even though I thought the characters and story were laughably poor). I can see why it got forgotten, but for a mainline FF that was a big deal in 2010 not to even make a cut of 128 stunned me. Much more than DKCR (a far better game, but one that was pretty niche even its own time).

Edit: And yeah, really cool topic idea. My feeling watching the contest was the last half of the decade overperformed a bit while the first half is starting to be forgotten (not surprising since we don't have nostalgia for early 10s games the way we do for early 00s games).

Tag.

Xenoblade Chronicles X actually did get in and had a pretty creditable loss to Batman, but the snubs were pretty crazy for this contest given there were like 15 indie games I'd hardly heard of (and even a gacha mobile game!). I would have liked to see Skyward Sword to see a genuinely vulnerable mainline console Zelda - but I guess LoZ knows how to protect is aura by locking its weaklings away.

It turns out when you finally stop recycling several year old tropes, players love getting something different!

I wonder if BotW would still have been this powerful if Nintendo didn't decide to throw ALttP/OoT design choices in most of the Zelda games for so long and innovated the series much sooner.

I think a really good classic Zelda would have been huge and won the contest anyway (or maybe TW3 could win it 50.5-49.5) - BOTW being what it is just removed all doubt and took it to the next level. Skyward Sword was a bit of a whiff (out very late in Wii life cycle, motion controls, felt rather sparse and a little rough) so it'd basically been a decade since a really clean landing for a mainline Zelda.

Hope it beats Majora's Mask so there's some reason to think it can do real damage in the next BGE contest - it's probably the only game from this decade that's a serious threat to do so (with great bracket placement TW3 could too, but seeding might be an issue for it).

Is it? In the first and third, it felt like jumping was more about positioning and dodging. Which of the bosses expect you to jump before hitting them? I literally can't remember any from either game, while DMC4 has four.

Cerberus, Nevan and Hell Vanguard in DMC3 at least (Gigapede if you count it LOL). Vergil 1/2, Dopple and Agni/Rudra I think getting airborne can be helpful/efficient (Vergil 3 I would tend to be very defensive in). Beowulf I'd use jumping mostly defensively, and against Geryon it's required in an obvious way. Extremely useful to be comfortable with air combos against the chess set.

Oh I mixed it up with the ending of The Deserter and called Zhao Ozai again. Been several years since I watched it so I forget what happened in which episode sometimes. The pirate episode has a much more playful tone, I remember it now - I did like Zuko stealing the necklace.

Also has some of Katara's dumb jealous stuff which is not very appealing (but understandable if you are sensitive about your ability and have to watch Aang just easing past effortlessly).

I thought Korra really struggled from being arc-based and not having a continuous villain/story to build on. With a more serious narrative hook to build on, there was a really interesting waiting to be told about how e.g. an anti-bending force rises up to demand equality (and they have a point - think of e.g. the massive employment advantages lightning benders have) that could have gone all sorts of places in Republic City (perhaps benders get driven out and go back to the nations?). It also struggled from the main cast other than Korra just being badly written (especially the shipping stuff - sheesh, are you playing Mako and Bolin entirely for the LOLs, or not?), which was salvaged a fair bit in later seasons but stopped it having a tight core cast which made TLA so special.

Still, other than S2, I enjoyed Korra and am glad it exists.

Katara's super-underrated (my controversial hobby horse is that her unpopularity is an example of why writing female characters that are pretty similar in attitudes/personalities to average real life women is fairly rare in young adult fiction, but I get why a lot of people find her annoying in a way more carefree characters like Sokka/Toph/Aang just aren't).

The choreography of the fight between Aang and Ozai in The Waterbending Scroll is a series highlight - Aang gives him his full attention, and lets him humiliate himself by torching his ships. Beautifully directed (we don't see where the fire is going, and neither does Ozai till it's too late).

I found it really intense on the harder/hardest difficulties. Real sense of having to be efficient with your materials (I remember being basically out of resources in the hotel section and having to fight off enemies with whatever the first guy dropped).

The characterisation and key relationship between the leads was compelling, even if the plotting was a bit off, and the pacing was strange - 'Spring' felt basically rushed. The Autumn and Winter sections had a much less claustrophobic feel, the best character scenes (e.g. the scenes at the house), and most of the best set pieces (the siege at the Dam, exploring the university, defending the shack with David, sneaking as Ellie).

One of the very few modern action adventure games I would put in the same class as e.g. MGS1/2/3 and RE4. I think it was my second Platinum trophy on PS4 too.

has any game ever scored over 70% in a quarterfinal?

No. Highest % in a 1v1 games contest QF (so 2004, 2010 or 2015) before today was OoT's 59.9% v LTTP in 2015 (OoT then went to 67.38% v SMRPG in the SFs).

The 2009 4-way contest had 4 polls in the QFs and SFs where OoT and FFVII managed to break 40% against 3 opponents. The highest of these was FFVII's SF where it got 44.77% v LTTP, SMB3 and SMW. In none of these would extrapolating the winner against the 2nd place finisher indicate a direct score of over 70% (none were even doublings).
