If SSHD is actually launching at $60, that's also more expensive than the original (pretty sure Wii games retailed for $50 back then).

You are correct, Wii games generally had a retail price of $50.

Because Nintendo made the terrible decision to give Zero Suit Samus a boob reduction in Ultimate, Pyra and Mythra now hold the record for largest boobs in the game.

I'm hyped for this Direct because it will be our first regular Direct in more than a year, as all of the other Directs were either Mini Directs, Partner Showcases, or focused on specific games or series.

Poll updates and trend charts for the poll from 3 days ago:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JSmVbKoUwNzqlgGCLq2hGfo0xWhVz813h45-w5g4NSI/pub?gid=305399188

This poll is a good example of how a pandemic has affected poll results, and even the trends as well.

In terms of historical trends for this poll, "None" has the most pronounced trends with a strong early vote and maintaining that strong early vote throughout the entire night vote and a brief portion of the early morning vote. It immediately collapses after the first 7-8 hours of the poll. The options "Five to ten", "More than 10", and "More than 100" all start off the poll very terribly, but improve themselves after the Power Hour ends with their best time period being the morning vote, then they all drop off hard again with their SNV being similar to the Power Hour.

The ongoing pandemic has clearly affected the trends very significantly here. This is most clearly visible with the trends for "None", which show a less extreme drop off in its trends from the Power Hour. It still performs best during the board vote and Power Hour, but it performed way better during the morning vote and day vote compared to the 2019 poll. In the most recent version of this poll, "None" lost a total of just 1.77% from 6:00 AM to the end of the poll. For reference, "None" lost a total of 4.90% after 6:00 AM in the 2019 poll. In 2018, it was 3.29% and the 2016 poll was 4.55%. So the trends were far weaker as a result of the pandemic, but this can be blamed on the options that were hurt the most by a pandemic (more on that later). What little trends "None" actually had in this poll were the caused by the options "One" and "Two to four" chipping away at None's strong early vote.

"One" is the only major option whose trends were mostly unaffected by the pandemic, as they are very similar to past versions of this poll. "One" still has a bad board vote and Power Hour, and continues performing terribly during the night vote and morning vote. It begins to perform better during the day vote, while the SNV is still its best time period just like in the previous versions of this poll.

"Two to four" also has very similar trends to the past versions of this poll, with the board vote and Power Hour being terrible and the night vote being only slightly better. The late morning vote and day vote is the best time period here, while the SNV is only slightly below average.

The options most heavily affected by the pandemic are "Five to ten", "More than 10", and "More than 100". Those 3 options were the main reason why "None" experiences a very noticeable drop off after its very strong first 7-8 hours of the poll. In the 2019 poll, the last 4 options (including the "outside" option) had 5 consecutive hours where they combined for 10% of the vote and 6 hours overall with the single best hour maxing out at 13.13%. But in the 2021 poll, the last 4 options never combined for more than 5% of the vote in any single hour (4.82% was the high point). These options simply didn't show up at all in the 2021 poll, so they really didn't have any trends to speak of.

As for the results of the poll, the pandemic has affected the results by causing "None" to perform almost 3% better compared to the 2019 poll. "One" has also done better during the pandemic, with an improvement of about 1.5% from 2019. "Two to four" has performed only slightly worse (5.71% to 5.45%). "Five to ten" has dropped from 1.54% to 0.81%. The most severe drop off came from "More than 10", which fell from 3.38% to 0.70%. "More than 100" fell from 1.13% to 0.53%. "I'm outside right now" has held steady with an identical 1.01% in both 2019 and 2021.

The UK has had what Biden just signed for over a decade, and in some form for much longer than that. TERFism is only a bigger issue in the UK than the US in that there are more big-name liberal and feminist figures, like JK Rowling, who are transphobic, but it's not really reflected in the law or in the culture outside of that bubble. If polling is to be believed, the UK public is either similarly or more accepting of transgender issues, for instance the bathroom thing is a non-factor there. I have seen the idea that the UK is more transphobic than the US floated before and I don't really think there's a solid basis.

Came across this article on TERFism in the UK while on Twitter:

https://xtramagazine.com/power/transphobia-britain-terf-uk-media-193828

It explains the main difference between anti-trans attitudes in the UK and the US. In the UK, anti-trans attitudes are found across the full range of the political spectrum. In the US however, anti-trans attitudes are mostly limited to right-wing political beliefs, and especially among those who are very religious.

The ones up for re-election in 2022 will be in the most danger of being forced out through a primary challenge, or possibly in the general election if it's a state that's not solid Republican. It's the 2024 and 2026 re-election cycles where enough time would have passed since the riots at the Capitol where a lot of voters won't care about their actions by then. Plus 2024 will happen at the same time as a presidential election is happening.

Allen shut down the MAGA community board shortly after the attack on the Capitol and made this post:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/400-current-events/79226621/949266774
The board was locked down relatively quickly after the terrorist attack on the Capitol. We didn't wipe out the board completely because it would make moderation of posts on the board impossible. The board was first simply locked down to keep the content accessible for the moderation staff. Since we didn't really have a protocol for such things, our tools to lock it down weren't perfect, so users could still be invited in. We'll be working on our CB tools in case something like this ever happens again in the future.

Today, we've made manual edits to the board to keep all users out so we can still see the posts for moderation purposes but for all intents and purposes, it's all gone.

To answer a few questions I saw while skimming the topic.

Why did we allow a MAGA board in the first place? When the board was first created, the group and name were certainly different than they are today. We also generally try to stay politically neutral when possible, so it seemed fitting to allow a pro-Trump/conservative board at the time. As things escalated over the years, we did have to step in a few times and get the board back in line, but there weren't any more posts on that board in particular vs the rest of the site that were inciting violence or celebrating it, and those users were handled unilaterally. After the terrorist attack on the Capitol and the fact that there were celebratory posts about it (all users of which were indeed banned), the board could no longer be justified.

Is it fair to ban a conservative board? Is that GameFAQs taking a political stand? It is not. Our political beliefs are never taken into account when handling site moderation. When a group is tied to terrorism, regardless of political spectrum, we aren't going to allow there to be a board for that group.

Why didn't GameFAQs post a BLM statement when the other ViacomCBS sites did? We were told not to, and that a post would be made on all sites. For reasons unknown to me, that message was not pushed to GameFAQs. I don't know if there was a technical error or if they just forgot to include us since we're on a sub-domain, but the fact of the matter is that I was explicitly told to let the company make the statement and they failed to do so. I'm not sure how political RV wants its product managers to be, but to be brief and upfront about it, I have been and always will be very pro-BLM. I'm leaving it at that.

If you have any other questions, I can try to answer them quickly, but I have a lot on my plate today so I can't monitor this topic all day and reply to it.

Well, the US is a really huge country, so there's a lot more potential for people to move around, especially when looking for a job. Also, many Americans went to college where they lived on-campus in a dorm room. The poll question itself specifically includes "dorms" in the wording of the poll question.

It depends on the state of the GOP in 2 years. Not impossible they won't still be at war with eachother.

The Republicans who supported Trump's efforts to overturn the election have a lot to worry about when they're up for re-election again. Even those in solid red states/districts should still be worried, because they can lose their bid for re-election by getting defeated by a challenger in a Republican primary. And I bet you a lot of challengers will be lining up to end their chance at re-election by defeating them in a Republican primary, then they have to fight off a challenge from their Democrat opponent in the general election.

With 2020's polls officially locked in, here is the updated history of our average vote totals:

Year | Average | % Increase / Decrease
1999 | 4408 |
2000 | 7062 | 60.21%
2001 | 14019 | 98.51%
2002 | 34435 | 145.63%
2003 | 55397 | 60.87%
2004 | 54598 | -1.44%
2005 | 56643 | 3.75%
2006 | 74644 | 31.78%
2007 | 87908 | 17.77%
2008 | 91112 | 3.64%
2009 | 85797 | -5.83%
2010 | 72588 | -15.40%
2011 | 56882 | -21.64%
2012 | 42981 | -24.44%
2013 | 36506 | -15.06%
2014 | 27323 | -25.15%
2015 | 21162 | -22.55%
2016 | 17492 | -17.34%
2017 | 14282 | -18.35%
2018 | 11360 | -20.46%
2019 | 10464 | -7.89%
2020 | 10483 | 0.18%

For the first since 2008, we have experienced an increase in our average vote totals. The increase in vote totals from 2019 to 2020 was extremely small with only a 0.18% increase. This finally ends an 11 year streak of declining vote totals. It seems likely that our vote totals have finally stabilized at rock bottom. This may sound like good news, but we really need to see vote totals increase far more than this. 2020 was also a really bad year in general for site improvements and features, with Allen's 6 topics on the GameFAQs Announcements board being far less than any previous year. Hopefully 2021 is going to be far better for site improvements and features, especially those that can help boost vote totals again.

I am unsure of whether the Coronavirus pandemic played any role in ending our 11 year streak of declining vote totals, given that more people were able to stay at home during 2020 as a result of losing their job or by transitioning to work from home. 2019 already showed that we were getting very close to the point of stabilizing our vote totals, so maybe the pandemic wouldn't have changed 2020's average vote totals.

The Board 8 wiki page on site traffic has been updated with 2020's vote totals:

Poll updates and trend charts for yesterday's poll:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KIHCwT8eir55iDR-45_aZlczJNIaYTWE1YQvITO8MFc/pub?gid=2056357076

Time | FFVIIR | GhostTsu | Votes | Demographic
EBV | 60.24% | 39.76% | 166 | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 55.97% | 44.03% | 1031 | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 55.14% | 44.86% | 2459 | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 54.70% | 45.30% | 1596 | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 55.95% | 44.05% | 2733 | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 57.35% | 42.65% | 2469 | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 55.68% | 44.32% | 519 | (22:00-24:00)

FFVIIR with a good early vote for once? Totally unexpected and not typical of normal FFVII trends. Although Ghost of Tsushima isn't really the type of game that would have a good early vote since it is a Western developed game and those usually have awful early votes, despite the game being very Japanese inspired. FFVIIR also has a good Power Hour in this poll, despite dropping off a bit from the board vote. But it is the ASV where FFVIIR performs best here. Also not typical of FFVII trends is that FFVIIR did worst during the night vote and early morning vote.

Yesterday's poll result is officially the largest victory by percentage in a 1v1 GotY poll. The full list of 1v1 GotY results:

2020 - 55.89% for Final Fantasy VII Remake over Ghost of Tsushima
2015 - 55.14% for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt over Fallout 4
2018 - 54.33% for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate over God of War
2019 - 53.58% for Resident Evil 2 over Fire Emblem: Three Houses
2016 - 53.08% for Final Fantasy XV over Pokemon Sun / Moon
2008 - 52.10% for Super Smash Bros. Brawl over Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

These 1v1 final polls mean very little in contests, we've seen before.

Even more so for this year's final poll because FFVII Remake is still an incomplete game. It will most likely end up being stronger after all of the remaining parts of the game are finally released, but it could also get weaker if the later parts are of subpar quality that weren't well-received by fans. And some people may be holding back on getting this game until the full thing is out there, which may limit its strength for now. This is a pretty good performance despite the potentially decent sized audience of future players who are waiting for the full thing to be released.

Trend chart from yesterday's GotY poll:

Time | AC: NH | FFVIIR | Tsushima | Hades | P5R | Yakuza
EBV | 16.22% | 31.08% | 20.95% | 12.16% | 13.51% | 6.08%
PHV | 19.46% | 28.97% | 21.30% | 11.89% | 11.35% | 7.03%
FNV | 17.69% | 29.01% | 21.80% | 13.45% | 10.53% | 7.52%
BSV | 17.69% | 30.99% | 21.56% | 14.33% | 9.43% | 6.00%
DSV | 18.42% | 29.59% | 21.37% | 13.74% | 9.52% | 7.37%
ASV | 18.77% | 29.17% | 21.25% | 14.06% | 10.65% | 6.10%
SNV | 18.75% | 32.97% | 21.55% | 10.13% | 10.34% | 6.25%

Based on yesterday's trends, I'd expect FFVII Remake to finish today's poll with a higher percentage than it has right now.

Holy shit FFVII Remake. Currently running over 60% right now with this early vote.

And now it's fallen back down to earth again.

1v1 GotY final poll today:

I was disappointed that Animal Crossing wasn't in today's poll. This really should have been a 3-way poll instead.

You missed P5R luster

Looks like I did. I didn't expect Allen to include that game today because of how far back it was from FFVII Remake. P5R was more than tripled by FFVII Remake.

6 game overall GotY poll today:

Looks like Cyberpunk missed the cut from the first day of GotY polls. And as expected, only FFVII Remake made the cut from the Remakes/Remasters poll.

I think it would be weird if the first overall GotY poll contained only 3 games, so I think there's potential for multiple games from the first 3 polls to make it into the overall GotY poll. Probably the top 3 games from both New Franchises and Sequels and Spinoffs, plus FFVII Remake for a 7 game overall GotY poll could be possible.

Noticed that Allen called it "Platform of the Year" instead of "System of the Year" like he usually does.

Finally got around to updating my game system ownership spreadsheet, which you can find here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iMtyUuzmT5ggmYy-xbiGf7fcloXuhkQuu4ZIC2nGI4M/pub

PS5 and Xbox Series X/S had very little increase in ownership from their launch day results. They are getting off to an even slower start than the PS4 and Xbox One. For comparison purposes:

PS4 - 8.48% on 11/15/2013, 16.66% on 12/28/2013
PS5 - 8.18% on 11/12/2020, 11.62% on 12/26/2020

Xbox One - 4.50% on 11/22/2013, 7.47% on 12/29/2013
Xbox Series X/S - 6.01% on 11/10/2020, 7.54% on 12/27/2020

PS5 is already about 5% behind the PS4 at a similar point in time. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X/S is similarly struggling to gain ownership following a better than expected launch day result. Even the extremely hated Xbox One gained more ownership from launch day to the end of 2013 than the Xbox Series X/S did in a similar time period.

It seems like the effect of the scalpers is extremely strong for this generation's new consoles than they were for the PS4 and Xbox One. It is the best explanation for the 2 new consoles getting off to such a slow start, and then you throw in a global pandemic on top of that which has hurt economies around the world and resulted in mass job losses.

Switch also increased its ownership to an all-time high of 69.07%, surpassing the original Wii's all-time high of 69.03%.

Coming up in the near future - A current look at the status of our vote totals with 2020's polls officially locked in.

I don't know if we'll be getting system GotY polls this year. Considering the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S recently came out and with both facing huge shortages with most people unable to get one, maybe Allen thought it wasn't the right time to run system GotY polls for those 2 systems.

With the "Got Console?" polls returning again for another short series at the end of this year, this means that I need to get around to producing a yearly update on the current status of our vote totals soon. That will be posted once the final poll of 2020 has been locked in.

GameFAQs GotY polls aren't really official GotY polls. Because you never see developers (or their parent publisher) mentioning that they won a GameFAQs GotY award.

Turkey

Because that's what I prefer to eat on Christmas, even if it's not as common when compared to Thanksgiving. I also have a harder time finding turkey in stores just before Christmas compared to Thanksgiving, probably because the stores were heavily cleaned out of their turkey stock for Thanksgiving.

Oh yeah, today's poll results are much different compared to the previous version of this poll.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/8310-

And as expected, the trends are very extreme. This poll is a good example of time-based trends in action, since the option you vote for is strongly determined by what time of day you vote in the poll. Time-based trends shouldn't be confused for Geolocation trends or even age-based trends, as time-based trends apply equally to all geographic regions.

I think that was roughly a 9 hour poll, based on posts in the stats topic archives that noted a new poll went up on the homepage around 3:00 PM EST. The extra poll would have been located directly below the contest match in the side column of the homepage.

PS4 won the earlier version of yesterday's poll in both 2018 and 2016, so I doubt the cost of the PS5 hardware is making a difference in the winner of the poll. In fact, the PS4/5 option won yesterday's poll over the PC by a smaller margin (by percentage) compared to PS4 in the 2018 poll even after factoring in the release of the PS5 recently.
