Finishing up this block of tunes is a song that I promise everyone you don't even need to like to find the chorus catchy. It's an anthem of sorts and I'm not 100% certain if it was meant to be serious or a joke song. It sounds quite comedic to me as I naturally find "trailer park life" comical. Been there done that so I know of the interesting scenarios that are sometimes commonplace but maybe that's why I feel like this song is sort of a parody. The beat is the best thing about the song imo.

Yeah... I think I've heard this one more times than I'd have liked. Obviously it has a catchy summertime beat but the best thing about it is clearly the video. So many girls in bikini's that I almost can't stand it. I'm not typically a perv but I have a certain limit of skin exposure that I can tolerate before I lose focus on anything else. It's actually one of the biggest reasons I hate going to the beach tbh. It's far too frustrating for me to process all of that sexual innuendo. I mean don't get me wrong, I don't think girls should cover up or anything like that but it's completely ridiculous with some of the string and revealing clothing girls wear these days. But um.. this is kinda going off topic so back to the song. Where was I... oh yeah, the song is literally about having intercourse on the beach.

Hey, some more "Jukebox Rock"! I swear this has to be in every single jukebox I've ever come across and that has been many over the years. It's undeniably ZZ Top's greatest hit imo too. In all honesty I think I've heard this almost every single time I visited a bar in the last 15 years as well. It's definitely uber popular in biker bars. Anyone who has visited very many biker bars will know exactly what I'm talking about. If anyone has seen that old Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds movie about a whorehouse in Texas, well this is what the song is about. Not the movie of course but the "Chicken Ranch" as it's been famously dubbed. The rhythm of the song should be recognizable to almost anyone imo but that could just be because it's a song I've personally heard so many damn times although it has appeared in a number of popular films including the blockbuster "Armageddon" as well as an overly syndicated Geico motorcycle insurance commercial.

Ok then. Had to change the video due to a copyright claim. Coulda sworn I had the official music video selected the first time around but I guess I didn't. If I were changing scores at this point I'd probably bump up the Beat and Hook here as the more I listen the "Better" they get imo. :P
Anyway, this might actually be the most recent favorite of GnR of mine (since honestly most of their other stuff sounds like they should have hung up their guitars and retired by now to me). The band can't top their significance in the 90's imo. The band still has a decent following of course even though it didn't get them to the top of the charts on this one. I thought it was funny to learn that the music video was delayed (missing a slated release) by none other than Lars Ulrich from Metallica who had given pre-authorization to use his image in the video but then later only signed off on one appearance forcing a video edit. I used to love Metallica above all else but the last couple of decades have proven that Lars is nothing but a self-righteous f***wit so I'm not too surprised here.

Hmm I dunno... at first I was digging this tune to a point but as I revisit it for the write-up I'm not so sure. That "do you feel it" line is very sharp on my ears atm. I do like the background piano play here though. Other than that I'm not completely certain where I was going with the other scores when I originally scored this tune. I would say that this is the rare case where I got things in reverse and perhaps scored it higher than I intended. Nonetheless I said I was not going to change any score before we hit the Top 1,000 so I guess I'll leave this as it is.

Geesh! I'm never gonna live this down dropping a One Direction song after a Nirvana song lol. I really don't like this band and I'm not sure why my wife chose so many of them for the list but this is only the 2nd of like 5 songs that appear in the ranking I think (I haven't double checked atm) but it's more than what I would have chosen for sure. The chorus does carry a catchy beat here but that's about it imo. I feel pretty disinterested in every other category but the gdamn song topped the charts giving it almost a perfect score there so this doesn't drop as low as I wanted it too (yeah I was secretly rooting for failure here) but at least it didn't make it into the Top 1,000.

Dang. I never knew I'd place a Nirvana song below the top 1,000 songs in a ranking but here we are. Despite the moderate popularity of this tune I honestly feel like it is quite unpolished for reasons. It's a simple riff and beat but there isn't a ton of magic in the vocalization here in the way that lyrics and vocals are meant to meet imo. After multiple listens the song just feels hollow and circled entirely around the repetitious beat. It would be pretty top tier for Grunge though for most of Nirvana's fans as far as I can tell. The song is recorded on the band's most successful album and is considered one of the top 3 songs on it. Even though I am willing to listen to it more than 50% of the time, I can't connect to it on a regular fan's level because it lacks a bit of substance for me.

The piano in this song is probably my favorite part tbh. However, I'm not as emotionally impacted as I can certainly imagine some folks might be here as it is a really melancholic tune to say the least. The song was featured in a favorite show of mine called "Six Feet Under" during it's finale and even appeared in a trailer for the 2008 Prince of Persia game. Oprah Winfrey also used it in her "farewell season" of her show in 2010 to generate atmosphere for the show's closing. But my favorite finale appearance came along in The Simpsons in the most recent episode of the 29th season which parodies the ending to Six Feet Under coincidentally and hilariously enough.

Oh boy... I feel like we might end up having our 2nd ranking regret here. I may have gotten into a particular 'funk' where this song raises the appeal detector in my brain after an incident I had to deal with recently. At the very least I have developed some muscle memory over this tune already. You know when you hear songs and they instantly bring back certain memories? Well, that's what is happening for me here only it's in the fresh stage. Before this nomination though, I had never actually heard this song although after a second thought I could have heard the band referenced somewhere but just didn't know what I was hearing about. For folk music this is really the ideal format imo. It has a message that sinks in as soon as the music does which is what I like about most of the decent folk music I hear.

Speaking of "Jukebox Rock" it seems we have two in a row. This is a pretty common selectable tune in my experience and not a half bad one too for a place with a dance floor. It's a little outside of my normal playlist for glam rock (since it's filled with lots of Queen) but the beat should be recognizable by almost anyone over the age of 30 imo. It's really catchy and rocked the charts pretty well becoming one of the biggest hits of '73/'74. You may wonder why it scores so low in 4 out of 7 categories for me after saying that but it's simple. Popular doesn't always mean best in my eyes. I have a few obsessive compulsive issues with this tune and it isn't one I can slap on repeat for too long without annoying my ear drums. Regardless... I can at least recognize the sell to the general audience here.

Another song that I have sort of recently decided to dub as "Jukebox Rock" as you can almost always find this among the selections among them. Certainly in my area that is the case anyway. There are 2 billiards and at least 4 bars I know of that have jukeboxes just in my city and they all contain this widely known and partially iconic song. At one of the pool halls I go to it can even be heard 2 or 3 times depending on how long you hang around. Since I love to play pool when I get the chance I have indeed heard it quite a bit. Interestingly enough it never really seems boring and generally adds to the atmosphere although I do feel a little bit of disinterest in multiple re-plays. If you happen to be a fan, there are still to come a couple much better tunes from the band so don't despair.

Ew what a terrible song to kick off the 3rd topic! Yet another song though that my clients just loved to hear every time I had to transport them somewhere. Sometimes I wish I had just lied and said the radio was broken or something to avoid crap like this lol. Anyway, I can't say for sure if this topic was delayed because of how much I didn't want to have to listen to this song again (J/k) but it may as well be the truth since I hate it so much. Why did I give it an average beat score then? Um.. well, when you hear it a thousand times you can't do anything but to admit that the song is polished to a degree or I'm semi-brainwashed I guess. Why is it here then? Another choosing of the wife's. I'd rather shut off the radio almost any chance I can get though and the lyrics are semi-annoying and half-brained too imo. It does score well with moderate listeners though so I didn't get the chance to gleefully rank it at the bottom which sucks. :/

[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3

[The Beat]
This will represent the overall rhythm and progression of the song imo. A slight evaluation of the instruments used in a song will also have weight on the final beat score.

[The Hook]
This will represent how likely it is that I listen to the whole song if it popped up on the radio. It will also represent the interest that I have to even finish a song.

[The Lyrics]
This will represent how well the verse and chorus are written imo. It will also represent my ability to memorize and sing along with the song if I have that interest. I also use this to measure how well the vocals mesh with the rest of the song imo.

[The Memories]
This will represent how much the song invokes personal memories. In some cases a song may gain points based on it's use in other Pop Culture I am familiar with.

[The Message]
This will represent the message of the song or the difficulty of understanding it's meaning imo. It also represents a degree of emotional response that I get from hearing the song. I also include points if a song comes with a decent backstory.

[The Stickiness]
This will represent the likelyhood that the song will get stuck in my head when I hear it. Depending on whether it's a verse, chorus, beat, simple riff or the whole damn song can determine how many extra points I give.

[Top 100 Bonus]
The ONLY piece of this scoring system that will be slightly Objective. I will score based on an average of the info I find. Top 100 lists, Best song lists, overall sales, awards won etc.

[The Leaning Points]
Every Song ranked will receive a "leaning" score in all 7 categories. A [0.1], [0.2] or [0.3] will be added to help the further breakdown of a songs final score. It's simply as follows:
[0.1] = I'm not 100% sure how I feel about a final score.
[0.2] = The final score can go either way up or down.
[0.3] = I am 100% confident in a final score.

Hello and Welcome!

You have arrived to my 2nd "Ranks 1,000+" project and this time around instead of B8 users we will be tackling 1,300 songs from the last 5 decades.

Just a couple of notes about the list:
-This ranking is almost entirely subjective. Please do not engage in a debate with me about whether this list qualifies as a legit "Best of" list. This is Not a ranking to determine the "best" based on record numbers or sales statistics etc.

This is purely a collection of tunes that are most appealing to my personal interests in music found within the amount of time I spent on research (with 300 nominations included). When the ranking is over you are more than welcome to reference any tunes that I did not include. I'm always down for great music and who knows, it is entirely possible that I will have simply overlooked some stuff that should be here. I listened to more than 5,000+ songs over the course of about 13 months or so, so I hope that was enough ground covered to at least offer some satiability. I have personally enjoyed the research either way.

---There are 260 songs representing each of the chosen decades. (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's)

----Yes I know the current decade has not yet completed but we are doing this anyway. Tbh there was sooooooo much terrible music this decade that I doubt we'll get anything much better than what we got right here. If I'm wrong, it doesn't matter because I don't want to sift through any more of this "Just Dance" infested generation.lol

Why didn't I include the 60's?
Simple, because I'm not confident I could have pulled 200 songs from that decade and also I would have known immediately what the #1 song would have been for this ranking.

So Instead... I present that song as this topic's Theme Song:

(...I really don't know why I favor this tune over everything else but every time I hear it I get a special kind of goosebumps.)

Paint It Black / The Rolling Stones / 1966
[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3

The Rollout
I will be dropping you tunes in a couple ways here. Each song will be ranked out of total 1,300 and top 260 from their decade. There will be several statistics included in an ongoing update. There will also be a special ongoing update displaying the Top ranked songs in every genre. *Genres were selected either by research or best fitting based on my experience.

The Nominator Challenge:
Some of you have submitted Nominations. You will recieve an update in topic whenever one of a user's nominations gets ranked. You will collect a Sum of points equivalent to the Sum of every placement on your list of nominations. The Larger this number, the lower you will place in the finals. The user who has earned the smallest score in the finals will have made the best nominations and be called Winner of the Nominator Challenge. (This is a Bonus game I play in most of my rankings.) ***At the start of this there are 2 Unclaimed Bots (#1 and #3). Anyone who wishes to claim a bot may do so in topic. First come, first serve.***

The Topic Discussion rules
Be Friendly, Be Respectful and Be Appropriate!

I'm always cool with off topic posting as long as it stays friendly. With my Bi-polar I am sometimes easily triggered by unfriendly disputes and would like this space to be as free from that kind of stress as possible. Thank You

So, enjoy and get settled in for the ride! There are sooo many great tunes heading your way. Thanks for stopping by and following the ranking. I hope that not only can users discover some new music here but maybe participate in some candid conversation about their favorite tunes as they pop up. Your Pal, Se7en. =P

Write-Up:
The highest scoring beat thus far in this ranking (I think unless I wasn't paying attention...) but unfortunately the rest of the numbers don't quite help out the song. There isn't a whole lot going on lyrically but I guess the song is about a possible mutiny aboard the main character's ship? As far as I can tell anyway... Yeah that's right according to some insight I found. It is also believed that the singer's longing in the end suggests that the Captain is already dead and it's his ghost telling the story. This is the band's longest song and also one of their best known according to the wiki so I'm not sure how accurate that is. It sounds right though. The structure of the song is quite similar to many songs from the late 60's.

Here is another classic Zeppelin tune and the 200th song on the 70's list. It's the first decade to reach the Top 200 so far and what a great place to start from there. Athough that might not look great for the 70's overall with the other decades still being several songs away from their Top 200's. The guitar play is fun and really tells a story to your eardrums if you got a decent set of headphones on. I tried to withhold from adding the whole Zoso album to the list since it is one of my favorites from the band but I did include 6 songs with this being the first to get ranked. Rolling Stone actually ranks this song #11 out of 40 of the best Led Zeppelin songs of all time.

Another song from the current decade that I have been forced to hear far too much more than I ever wanted. You might think this is a decent song with a catchy bit if you've heard it only a handful of times but I almost feel like this would annoy anyone who has heard it 100+ times too. The Weeknd seemed to have dropped a bunch of hits together but there are only 1 or 2 of his songs that I even think are tolerable or worth a listen. This kind of music feels too cookie cutter to me in the way that some movies are just cash grabs and never actually service the fans. So why is it on the list then? Because it's another song my wife has chosen to be here. (Yeah we have a big difference in songs we like when it comes to this decade.)

Can you understand.. this is an average song.. lol. I like the intro riff but it reminds me of something else that I can't for the life of me recall atm. I can hear it in my brain but the dots aren't connecting for some reason... maybe it was in a movie or a show I think. Oh well, guess I can come back to this in reference if I ever figure out what it was. Anyway, I wasn't really ever a BTO fan and the only song I really am familiar with is "Taking Care of Business" which I think most everyone who has listened to the band before would also be familiar with. Interesting fact, the hardcore fans of the band are known as "Gearheads" which is a derivitive of the band's gear shaped logo.

Hey, 80's R & B! Quite the difference from modern day R & B that's for sure. This song seems to have been pretty popular back in the day and even resulted in a Grammy Award for the singer in 1990. I don't have strong opinions here but I didn't typically listen to this sort of music in the 80's/90's. In 2002 Jimmy Fallon actually did a parody of the video for this tune when he performed his song "Idiot Boyfriend". Another interesting thing about this song that all the video game nerds can find exciting is that this tune closely resembles Sonic's "Spring Yard Zone" track in the 1st Sonic game.

Write-Up:
Don't get me wrong here and nothing against NIN but there are some of their songs that are so much better after they are covered by someone else. Their industrial rock approach to this song doesn't feel quite right but Johnny Cash's country version sends it much further up the list imo. This song may be most recognizable to folks as the main theme for the movie "Logan" as it was recorded by Johnny Cash. Eerily enough, I believe that this is one of the last songs that he had actually covered before his passing and he even sings it like his last words on earth. There is some internet love for NIN's version but I'm just not much of a fan here. So much so that it disappoints me that I can't rank Cash's version instead as it would land somewhere in the 300-400 range.

Best Version IMO:
Johnny Cash / American IV: The Man Comes Around / 2002

This song has a fun riff that catches my ear almost immediately. It seems that it'd be easy to learn and I like a good toe tapper from time to time. It really isn't that often that I give anything Country related a chance but Country Rock is among the most tolerable Country for me. This dude has been making music for quite some time and I actually thought this was from the 70's or 80's when hearing it for the first time. I was kinda shocked to see that it came out just 5 years ago.

Oh yes that's two of the songs I recognize! It's kinda weird that they weren't among the songs I sampled though when researching the band. (Actually I bounced from one song to the next on youtube so I can't really call that research) But it is interesting that neither was linked when I sifted through some of their catalog.

I definitely knew that I had heard something from the band before. I don't recognize London Calling though... I must have missed that one somehow over the years.

Dear lord I hate this song so much. When this song was released I was working for Best Buy and at the time was in charge of the TV dept where we'd set up all the display tv's and whatnot. The thing was that Best Buy had it's own channel that would play on a loop and it contained a few music videos including Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle", Sheryl Crow's "Soak Up the Sun" and this turdy gem. After an 8 hour shift of hearing this every 20 minutes and almost anyone would begin to despise it. I actually rejoiced when they had finally taken this song off the rotation after a couple of months. I'd offer some other tidbits of info here but nope. This song sucks.

So after multiple listens I am decidedly fixed on the chorus here and the chorus alone. Although it isn't too deep lyrically it has a catchy ring to it. "Death or Gloryeee...". It's weird though because I have almost certainly heard of the band before but I was checking out some of their other work and I couldn't even find a song that I recognized. It doesn't appear that they received too much mainstream success but there is a dedicated following for the band. The song itself speaks about the previous generation of rock stars who were commonly quoted as swearing to die before aging so maybe the whole song is about aging? One critic claims that "this song features the best and most satisfying chord progression and melody the Clash ever came up with" but I wouldn't know if there was any truth to that. What are your thoughts on that Snake?

I know it's typical for the Gorillaz to be a bit theatrical with their music but it almost feels like there is too much wasted airtime with this tune and it really distracts from the core of the song imo. I do like the beat/chorus here though. I hadn't actually heard anything from the Gorillaz in the last 4 or 5 years so it was interesting hearing something of theirs that was new. I can easily see this song rising if I were to re-rank the list. I do think the song is a bit catchier than I scored it for originally but it wasn't enough to bump the song this time around.

Song: "Earthcrusher"
Band: Mr. Lif
Album: Live At The Middle East
---{ 2002 }---
Genre: Hip Hop
Score:[6.2][5.2][6.2][0.3][5.2][4.2][2.2] = [29.5] = [4.214]
Video:

Write-Up:
At first I thought that this might have been familiar some how as if I maybe heard it in a GTA game or something but I couldn't recall or find info suggesting it was located there so I guess I haven't heard it anywhere that I am familiar with. It's a got a cool beat and the lyrical rhymes are on point. Still not at the type of Hip Hop I prefer but this genre is certainly getting better here. I don't have much of any insight to the song though unfortunately.
