Write-Up:
Finally this block of songs is finished. Not a super great song to end it with but the beat is decent. I think there is only 1 song from this band that I have ever heard before this and it was in either a Saints Row or GTA game if I remember correctly. A bit of this song sounds just like another song further up the list that I actually like from the 80's also. It sounds so similar in fact that I thought this was that song at first and was prepared to bump it higher until I obviously figured out it wasn't the other song. The song was written to make a statement about the Lebanese civil war in 1982.

It's been quite some time since I had heard this song but for some reason I thought it was much better the last time I did hear it. Maybe I'm thinking of a different song but I didn't think so. I'm not completely sure where to begin with this song though. There are some decent riffs in there but the whole lot of it sounds like a mess to me. I know that it's sometimes common for Kansas but the sharp vocals offset the melody in some places.. or in a more specific way it sounds like the backtrack and vocals have a weird partition between them or don't mesh well imo.

Write-Up:
The Hip Hop is getting better finally but this one isn't all that original as it borrows from Modest Mouse's "Float On". It's a catchy tune all the same I'll admit but as far as my personal preferences go it really doesn't register that high on my list of interests. The lyrics are ok but I feel like I'm listening to an amateur artist here vocally. It's got a fairly high approval rate among listeners though so that's good. There is a Hip Hop artist in my area that has been trying to kick off his career in the last few years with local shows around the state and he sounds exactly like the lead singer here but with a significant difference in his urban lyric choice. I bumped into him one day selling cd's outside of a 7-11 near my house and actually bought 2 of his cd's a couple years ago. I can't seem to track him down online for more info so I wonder if he ever made it...

Album: Greetings From Ashbury Park, N.J.

Write-Up:
I think it was around this point in Springsteen's career that people actually started to take notice of his musical ability or in my personal opinion it's when he started to not suck so bad. I will always think that his progression towards the 80's got better and better as time went on ultimately leading to his greatest hits which I also happen to believe only existed in the 80's. This song would never be a success for Springsteen but climbed the charts to #1 when Manfred Mann took a crack at it 3 years later. The progressive approach to the song does add a little bit to it but honestly I don't really think it's that much of a difference but to each their own I guess.

Best Version IMO:
Manfred Mann - The Roaring Silence - 1976

It's ok. I was just being funny. I honestly have no idea what your response has to do with Chopin's post though. Did I miss something here?

That movie is particularly famous for the "If you kill him, he wins." Quote. I was trying to draw a parallel there but might have been too vague.

I love the movie but I totally missed that reference. Although I should have guessed since I have only ever interacted with Hoth like once since I started using this site back in '03.

Hey man! Haven't seen you on this board lately! I'm drunk and I just stumbled upon this message. I think they're talking about the movie? I honestly don't know. I don't feel like reading. Looking forward to bb7 in a few weeks and maybe you can rustle up a few more sign ups in this neck of the woods? ;P

This is a classic tune that many might think was originally put out in the 90's with The Fugees version which is pretty well the best version tbh but there has been a long going dispute between the originality of the song and eventually Lori Lieberman was given credit for the inspiration of the tune. I use Roberta Flack's version here because Lori's version is significantly different with different lyrics and instrument play. Also this version earned itself a spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame so Lori can suck it for all I care lol. Anyway, this still wasn't the best version imo.

Best Version IMO:

Write-Up:
If you were to ask me what the worst thing to happen in 2012 was I'd tell you it was this song. I don't even care to know what the song translates to in english as I am so adamantly opposed to this song and would only listen to it if I was forced to. Since I work in a business where I have to frequently transport clients I'm often stuck listening to whatever the client wants to listen to on the radio and in 2012 this song drove me f***ing mad since everyone was listening to it and immitating the moronic looking dance that goes with it. Perhaps I am sour over this tune because of that experience but it is what it is. 2012 was also not a very great year for me event-wise and hearing this song often brings up those bad memories that I'd rather not think about. This should be at the very bottom of the list imo but it's popularity on the charts didn't give me the chance to do that unfortunately.

I probably gave this more points than I should have for the hook score but I think I went with what I did because it almost sounds like something Metallica could have produced in the late 90's. It's pretty dull though if I were to be honest. It doesn't seem as if there was an intended peak to the song and once it's over I can't even recall the beat or melody that's how much impact the song has on me. I actually prefer the title track to this album although it isn't my favorite Pantera song really.

Let me be clear, I do not like this song at all. It is one of the songs that my wife selected for the list so I had the unpleasant duty to rank it. I had no interest in the Jonas brothers before they went on their solo careers so I really don't care for what they are doing now. There was a period of about 6 months where all they did was play this on the radio it seemed and I couldn't wait until I didn't have to hear it anymore tbh. I couldn't have cared less if this were to land at the very bottom of the list where I believe it should be but here it is more than 150 songs later.

Not my favorite DMB song by a longshot but this is an ok easy listening tune nonetheless. The band is known for it's ability to play freestyle which I guess is why they get classified under Jamband so easily. The variety of wind and string instruments used here give it it almost a symphonic feel which I like but other than that, I don't know what else to comment on here. Shortest write up so far? Maybe...

David Bowie hasn't had too much luck in this ranking so far and here is another of his tunes getting dropped before the Top 1,000. I know there are many who love his music but I always feel a strong disinterest for most of his stuff. Is it just me or do most of his songs sound similar anyway? Whatever the case, I couldn't bump it any higher than this because it just isn't all that exciting. It scored incredibly higher than I was expecting on the charts so there is obviously a following. I think one of the things I don't like too much about Bowie's music is that he always tries to create the most melodramatic stuff he can but it never engages my feelings on anything. I have almost zero emotional connection even though I can recognize what he is trying to do here. Oh well. Hopefully no one finds my disliking of him to be offensive but he was much better in the 80's imo.

I do like the beat to this song but I wondered through most of it if it would be much better off as an instrumental as I don't exactly feel like the vocals mesh well with the song. Maybe I just feel like anything Mega Man inspired should be strictly instrumental but I'd have to find many more examples to decide that for sure but it's just a feeling at this point. That might be from years of humming to classic Mega Man themes and whatnot. It actually wasn't until I met Raetsel that I even knew there were Mega Man dedicated/themed bands so the concept of including vocals in that kind of music is still relatively new to me. This nomination is yet another that skirts the rules for the ranking though. Songs were supposed to be from an actual album but in the case of this song it is slated for release on The Protomen's upcoming Act III album. It is the only nomination in the topic that was allowed in this manner because the album has actually been confirmed.

It's kinda bizarre that the wiki has 15 or 16 versions of this song listed out but there does not exist a page for The Doors version which happened to be one of the most popular versions. Some of the other covers are from popular bands like George Thorogood, Whitney Houston, Chicago and Tupac Shakur among others. It's an ok song and The Doors just barely squeaked out their version before UFO covered it the same year. The original was recorded by Bo Diddley way back in 1956. I think I've said it already in a previous ranking but I'm not too much of a diehard for the band. The best thing about the song is the beat which is kind of underwhelming even though I scored it just over half way to a max score. As I said though, this is the best version imo even though there are probably many folks that would argue for the case of George Thorogood's version.

Here is one of Abba's best selling songs of all time actually making it on to a list of about 40 songs to ever break 10 million copies of a single sold worldwide which is quite the achievement really. This is also one of the few songs that doesn't follow the regular rules for the ranking. The rule was that either the original song or the earliest cover of it would only qualify but in this case the Abba version is being selected for a reason. The true original which was recorded by an Abba band member on her 1975 album "Frida ensam" is actually quite a bit different, in Swedish and up until the very last minute was titled something entirely different. So basically there were enough differences to qualify this version as an original instead. It is the only time this happens in the ranking for this reason.

Oh boy um.. I am able to say that there is a better version of this song but I don't have a lot of insight about it other than that. Neils' version wasn't originally released in the states and didn't appear here until he released another album a few years later. Captain & Tennilles version rose almost immediatly to the top of both the Easy Listening and Pop charts for four straight weeks in 1975. It also became the best selling single of 1975 but too bad that doesn't help the original version here. Neil Sedaka would go on to eventually record a parody of his own song for his first children's album in 2009 calling the song "Lunch will keep us together".

Best Version IMO:

Anyway, I know this is a big hit for a lot of people but it's only tolerable to a certain extent to me. Maybe I heard it too much as a kid or something I dunno. It charted well despite my opinion of the song so clearly I'm in the minority with my dislike of it although it was prevented from ever earning the top spot because of a Barbara Streisand song which has got to be pretty embarrassing am I rite? The song was eventually covered by Seal in the 90's but I have no idea which version is better.

This is probably one of the most popular tunes to come out of the late Disco era and as some of you might expect, I'm still not too much of a fan. I tend to prefer modern Disco like some of the stuff that is made by Daft Punk and similar bands. What is a bit different than you normally saw in these Disco songs from the 70's though is that there is a guitar solo in the middle. It's kind of surprising but meshes well I might say. Other than that and the beat I couldn't score this too high at all even though on a more factual list and from a less personal point of view it should score rather high I suspect.

Here is a song that was co-written with Bruce Springsteen who even would tour with his own version that is pretty terrible actually. Patti Smith was not really enjoying her career as she wasn't seeing too much success. That is until this song of course as this song became the best known song on the Album and propelled it's sales far beyond what was expected. Not only did it give Patti a taste of success, the song also became one of her best known. Bruce had actually been recording this song when he was next door to Patti. He reportedly wasn't happy with it so his producer gave it to Patti who re-recorded it with her own lyrics. I feel like it's a strong classic but I don't feel like it offers much in replayability if you are into songs that you can listen to over and over.

I grew up in the age that this dude was quite popular but I never really took to liking his music as I am also named Steve and I used to despise when my friends would call me "Stevie Wonder" so... Anyway, I tend to switch the station almost immediately any time his music pops up. It sounds like a hit on the surface but is quite shallow lyrically and the beats feel more redundant to me than they probably actually are. Maybe I'm being ridiculous with the bias or maybe it's because I'm not so into 70's music as much as I thought. Speaking of which, this is the first in a 7 song run massacre of the 70's. This song took me a few listens to open up to it. I like the overall beat and melody but it sounds/feels like there are a few places that break up the song in a bad way. I can't help but think of the lead singer from My Chemical Romance when I listen to the vocals but they are not the same person of course. An interesting thing about the lead singer of Coheed and Cambria (Claudio Sanchez) though is that he also created the comic book series "The Armory Wars", "Key of Z" and "Kill Audio" which he co-wrote with his wife. He also worked on some other graphic novels but never really found success with anything else. This song is ok for the most part but isn't chart topping by a mile.

When the jukebox kicks on at that diner and the record starts playing and Juliette Lewis starts beating the crap out of that redneck damn.lol I don't mind the tune and it does get kinda catchy the more you listen. I mean the score is accurate so this placement is right but there are several songs that have already been ranked that I feel like "on the surface" are better songs to listen to but then again it doesn't just come down to whether or not I can tolerate listening to a song. This is an ok song and it sounds like it should be a classic but the whole thing is under par imo. The band is/was semi-popular in Canada though so it made it onto the ranking when I was scooping up some of the top international songs from the 80's.

RANKING RE-REVIEW #1

Howdy folks. Welcome the the first of what is sure to be a few re-visits to previous rankings. This series of posts (yeah there will sure to be more) is something I decided to include because early on I had decided on a way to deal with what I like to call "Ranking Regret". I didn't realize it right away but after the first 1,000 item ranking I completed and now having compiled and reviewed 1,300 songs here It was plain as day that sometimes not enough time can be spent with every nomination/selection.

What this post series will do is grant the viewer insight to how a song may rank if there were to be a sequel. Along with the current info you get with the ranking I will also offer an approximate score of where the song could land on a re-vised list.

On the the first Ranking Regret... we have a song that has just been bouncing inside of my head since the day I dropped it. Had I caught it in time or known it was gonna burrow itself inside of my brain, I could have perhaps changed it's fate in this ranking.

This song just won't leave my thoughts especially in the last few days. I don't think I gave it the right kind of listening ear that I should have honestly. I wondered if the fact that I was expecting something totally different from the band is what threw me off. Anyway, this song is a whole lot deeper than I gave it credit for and is perfectly poetic. The rhythm and vocals have put me in such a trance that I've had difficulty focusing on other things. I've recently had to deal with yet another death in the family and the melancholic harmony here has allowed me to vent the sadness and frustration that comes with recognizing one's mortality. I know the nomination is on the Bot's list but I wanted to thank you @Chinballz for this nomination.

Sorry for the false alarm then guys. I've personally never seen GameFAQs mentioned anywhere else so I thought it was significant for some reason.
