No matter how prosperous they were the existence of black townships and neighborhoods during that time hung on the whim of white supremacists who would burn them down and massacre the people (virtually always started on a rumor or a lie). The insurrection of Wilmington was particularly crazy, that town has never recovered to the level of prosperity it had prior to the coup. The Elaine, Arkansas massacre is another big one that doesn't get attention.  These are just some of the bigger ones, notice that a lot of these occurred during Reconstruction Era or after WW1, when black folks gained rights and after black soldiers returned home from war expecting better treatment. Although slavery is a big part of it, reparations also extends to the Jim Crow era because slavery didn't end after the Civil War, it evolved to Black Codes and peonage laws, frivolous laws that only black people could be arrested and charged for and sent right back to the plantations on leases.
