on advice from posters in an earlier topic, i stuck to the traditional lamp paradigm, aside from using a distributed version of sqlite. long way to go, esp. before parity with gamefaqs' feature set, but at least the stack is tied together and the most basic functionality is working.

YouTube loves to make new rules and not tell anyone about them than retroactively strike your channel for said rules citing this is not allowed even tho it previously was.

a few months ago a ton of users got strikes for having playlists with one or more videos that were taken down for violating the site's terms

what's ridiculous is that (1) it was not their videos, and (2) the playlists were autocreated by youtube years ago and populated with every video the users "liked," and (3) the video which triggered the strike was not actually specified

had success in the early/mid '10s, but the ux went to trash in years since and dating culture has become similarly awful

for sure. i have friends with gentle and extremely well-behaved pits, even around strangers. this is not one of those cases.

went to pick up a package from my front doorstep, and lo and behold the neighbor's pit was loose in my yard again and charged at me

was holding my laptop in my other hand since i was in the middle of a call, so i was a bit slower than usual in picking up the package and closing the door, but i managed to get back in the house and slam the door like a split second before it got to me

disappointing, can't even go for walks in the neighborhood without worrying about them, since that's not the only house in the neighborhood with pits that get loose periodically

wasn't long ago someone got attacked in the area, albeit by a pack of huskies; seems like too many people lack the sense of train or properly secure their dogs

paranormal = that which is beyond the normal or our scientific understanding

given the limited scope of human knowledge relative to what fully encompasses reality, it would be irrational not to believe in some abstract notion of the paranormal. i'm confident there have been paranormal or otherwise emergent phenomena which have not been scientifically explained yet, but that does not mean they aren't real before that point.

that's not to say i believe in the specifics of things typically associated with "the paranormal" though.

i don't dislike any side of my family but i kinda favor my paternal grandmother's part of the family because i spent more time with them growing up

i have a bs in cs but i can't comment with confidence about the state of affairs for entry level jobs these days

between the giants hemorrhaging talent into the labor market over the past couple years and companies generally being reluctant to invest in new hires out of paranoia about them job hopping once they've picked up enough credentials and experience, the landscape seems a bit cynical

doesn't mean it's an impossible job market though, especially if you go beyond coursework with respect to extracurricular projects and skills development and are open and ready to work in unlikely corners of the industry early in your career, and it's definitely valuable knowledge base / skillset to have in general

some additional advice:

• also if you can land an intership with a startup, i'd highly encourage it
• pay attention in algorithms and data structures class, arguably the most important course you will take in any undergrad cs program
• if there are cs-related student interest orgs, get involved with them; great for networking and generally being exposed to students interested in and actively doing more than what is required by the degree program
• if there are any software project ideas you're interested in but have no idea how to do right now, that's a great way to begin with self-directed learning

i was born and raised in portland, so i found myself there a few times during my early years. haven't been there in over twenty years though.

i feel like it's reversed over the past decade-ish, where traditional checkout is preferred

self-checkout is overcrowded and often malfunctioning, or has odd stipulations like requiring an attendant if you don't want too many items bagged, and you end up to wait/ask for assistance as a result

of course i just order my groceries from the next town over these days because my local grocery store is way too much of a hassle - understaffed, overcrowded, plus the stuff i mentioned above, plus the milk seems to be spoiled half the time

Why not reach out to the guy who runs the gamefaqs archive (that we can't direction mention on the boards)? They've already got DB support and like... 10+ years of archived content so they clearly have the storage space.

Roadhogg's account has not been signed into since 2008 and the archive itself seems to have been broken for a few years now.

I run the Lemmings Forums. Much smaller, but it runs alongside several insignificant sites on a $12/mo Digital Ocean droplet. SSL is free via LetsEncrypt. A domain is maybe $20 a year. We might need a higher value droplet if it gets really active, but the costs are completely feasible.

I could fund a domain if needed. Had no idea there were free SSL services, but I'll keep that in mind.

Getting someone to make the damn thing is the biggest obstacle. I'd like to say I would, but my track record of finishing projects is kinda poor and PHP is not something I do overly well with. The old clones had bugs (GameFAQ++ had one that literally allowed any registered user to moderate messages lmao) and are written for outdated PHP versions, so wouldn't be the easiest things to bring up to date.

Agreed. The old codebases (especially GFH and WF forks) had a frightening number of security vulnerabilities, with a few quality exceptions that might have enjoyed a bit of security by obscurity (aURL, EGFC). Some developers wrote vulnerabilities into their own software for personal amusement.

I'd be open to building within the constraints of my time, though I need to brush up on the landscape of libraries I might want to use for the concept I proposed.

If we did theoretically opt for a LAMP-based forum, it would be extremely easy and there's a lot of secure boilerplate that didn't exist back then, but I remain queasy about long-term uptime assurances. Even if fully paid for into perpetuity like a number of my AWS-based sites, the Amazon baremetal the instances live on occasionally degrades after a while and then the cloud instance goes down, which means needing to actively monitor things and also potentially have periodic backups. Set and forget preferred.
