Despite being all about collectivism, a lot of so-called leftists have strong egos which make them more prone to causing unnecessary drama and conflict. They also like participating in virtue signal contests because the perception of being morally righteous is more important than forming coalitions with liberals, moderates, and even other leftists.

That is probably more true for the right - the big egos and constant purity/virtue signaling tests - until the very last line which is absolutely only true for the left while the right wing "age of consent" disputing libertarian creepoids manage to get along with the religious zealots, white nationalists, and gun stockpilers long enough to hate their enemies together despite all of them being rigidly intolerant of each other in many ways.

Is that even really a thing anymore?

The problem with leftists, is that without a handful of top down billionaires to fund our movement and tell everyone what to think, there's so much infighting and disagreement and cancelling.

When the right wing hate each other or disagree, you never know about it until there's power or money at play. Leftists will happily trash each other for free anytime.

I was thinking about how when I was a kid, they still ran a lot of the old Warner Bros. Looney Tunes shorts in blocks, and how they were filled with references that I knew from stuff my parents talked about or still had some relevance in the pop culture (Like references to Frank Sinatra and Mae West), or I just didn't get... and how a late millenial or member of gen Z would probably know even fewer.

It's a good movie, you should watch it again. It holds up pretty well with the practical effects lending it a very eerie and otherworldly feel even more in the modern age of shiny CG.

Actually I think there's a lot of themes. I don't think there is one great message to the movie, but it touches and satirizes a lot of things.

One is clash of class... you have the nice small town middle class couple's home taken over by rich out of towners with Lydia's weirdness and youth being the link between the class divide.

But ultimately it's a zany story about a sweet couple that dies and then struggle as ghosts to scare away the annoying yuppies that buy their home, only to find their big city cynicism won't allow them to be scared... so they hire a real ghoul to do the dirty work, and it backfires when the degenerate ghoul turns out to be untrustworthy and a sex pest which requires they work together to save Lydia from his clutches.

Of course there can be good without evil. I can sacrifice a small amount of time to volunteer helping others. No evil needs to happen, unless we define every minor inconvenience and discomfort as evil - which I don't. Ultimately, I believe evil needs intent or it's just misfortune.

I don't think most people disagree either, evil requires intention and therefore there can obviously be good without evil.
