I have played zero GBC games. It's simply after my time with any interest whatsoever on handheld. I certainly could have named more classic games I've played, but most of them are crap. Sword of Hope and the port of Mortal Kombat aren't even deserving of +1.

Okay, I'm gonna go in a completely different direction with this one. My dad always used to laud the creation of this game, and I dunno what's even the proper name to call it beyond just "Chess," but we had a DOS-based Chess game that was under 10 kilobytes. The graphics were respectable enough insofar as the pieces looked like chess pieces. The game was perfectly functional, ran smoothly, and used arrow keys to move around the board to select pieces rather than just typing grid squares.

The kicker, though, was that it had an AI with 7 difficulty levels that my dad (who was decidedly not a chess player) was never able to beat even on the simplest settings. Neither did I, though that isn't saying much given how old I was at the time.

Honestly, the game's a bit of an enigma, because even with the best machine language-written optimized code of the time, I still can't imagine how they made a game that small that did as much as it did. So that's my answer: Chess.exe (DOS).

I didn't submit a list either, I couldn't come up with enough titles.

My list was mostly Commodore 64 games, with a couple exceptions. But that's what I had back then. My parents were anti-console for a very long time, but somehow playing games on a computer was okay.

And there weren't very many universal experiences on C64. Or DOS. Or really anything outside of school edutainment. Other than ports, Prince of Persia was probably the first genuinely successful computer game that I can think of. (Successful is obviously an incredibly relative term here. Does Ultima count? Zork? King's Quest?)

And I just realized Quest for Glory I was 1989. Damn.

10. Rampage -- An absolute classic. Nothing like taking King Kong, Godzilla, or a giant wolfman to flatten cities across the U.S. I've played this game on so many different systems. Arcade was naturally one of the harder ones since it's meant to eat your money, but it's one of those games that's just fun to grab a friend or two, and pop a stack of quarters into the machine.

9. Off-Road -- I didn't expect anyone else to remember this existed, but it was one of the ubiquitous racing games from back in the day. Most racing games were over the shoulder, like Pole Position, but a few like Super Sprint and Out Run asked you to look at the whole course from above. Following the traditional R.C. Pro Am "don't get last place" format, collecting nitros and upgrades so you could slog around a bunch of monster truck/motocross tracks was a great game to run on a single quarter if you knew what you were doing.

8. Pac-Man -- It's Pac-Man. Duh. Only surprise is that it didn't go higher.
6. Ms. Pac-Man -- See Pac-Man.

7. Contra -- I also expect this to show up on the NES list since I think probably more people remember this game as being the banner-carrier for the Konami code. An incredibly hard game if you're a kid who isn't paying attention to the whole screen, but thanks to having 30 lives on NES, I've beaten this at least a dozen times at 3 or 4 different friends' houses. And I played it on arcade cabinets, too, but never got very far since 3 lives is much more restrictive.

5. Final Fight -- Good, classic, side-scrolling beat-em-up. This era had a great many of these, and while I might be surprised not to see a few others, it's no surprise Mayor Haggar makes the list.

4. Donkey Kong -- Forget Play-Choice 10 or non-super Mario Bros. Donkey Kong was Nintendo's first appearance in the arcades, and one of the truly classic games of all-time. Whether it's a *good* game is open to interpretation, but it's certainly classic.

3. Space Invaders -- Another game that was simply ubiquitous in the 80s. I've played this on Atari. I've played this on 5 different ancient computer brands. Even people who didn't know video games knew Space Invaders. I was never very good at it, but I could at least usually beat two levels before the game got obnoxious.

2. OutRun -- Of all the games here, this is probably the one I've played the least. Which is not to say I haven't played it. OutRun represents the classic racing game of old. They even made versions where you could sit in a seat and "drive," which of course became a staple later for games like Daytona and Cruis'n.

1. TMNT - And if Final Fight were an obvious inclusion, TMNT was *the* game to play in the arcades back in the day. I swear every pizza parlor and movie theater had a copy of this game, which is no surprise because even if a single player didn't go through their quarters nearly as quickly, it could cycle four players at a time. And remember: Winners don't use drugs.

And yet, for quite some time before the indie revival, they were basically not being made.

The obvious answer here is Crysis, right? It was used as benchmarks for computers for ages. I've never met anyone who was actually able to play Crysis, but maybe the only argument against it is the fact that while some games were optimized in such a way to be playable, Crysis said screw you, go spend $4000 on the top Alienware build if you want to even pretend to play our game.

I played RCR with a neighbor. We didn't have the manual and were just trying to figure out the game for ourselves. We legit had no idea there were stat increases or anything. We just ran around in 2P beating stuff up, with the game gradually getting harder, until we got to an area where it seemed like we weren't able to keep going. I never knew why. (And still don't.) There was just nothing at the end of that screen.

actually, I'll also vote for Demon Crest -- it had to be better than Beavis and Butthead.

Only one of these I've legit played is DW3. (Unless 2 minutes of Ninja Gaiden counts.)

In 1988, I was introduced by my neighbor to Dragon Warrior. I was 8 years old, and this was the first time I had ever seen anything we would describe today as an RPG. In fact, it was to my amazement that it was an NES game where we could actually save our progress, too. I fell in love, hard, but unfortunately I rarely got to play. When I was at my friend's, he almost always took the controller. Still, I thought I was hot stuff for getting to level 9 and making it to Rimuldar to buy magic keys for the first time. Grinding, to me, was fun, and I was prepared to spend hours walking in circles waiting for random battles to happen. Still, DW1 had its flaws.

A few years later, I had the opportunity to play Dragon Warrior 3, and it basically solved all of that. Though my friends at the time were partial to DW4 and its stronger characterization and story, I preferred 3 where I could play the same people throughout and just grind grind grind. I was convinced back then (and for a long time after) that the proper way to play these games was to mash the fight button and then use MP strictly to heal once the battle was over. My party choice reflected this.

And that was the cool part -- I'd played a few party-based games on computer by now, so it wasn't a completely novel concept, but being able to choose my party was awesome. (I would not play Final Fantasy for another couple years.) The large, sprawling overworld, the winding dungeons, and the colorful enemies that I would mentally train myself to learn the HP totals for while I strove to earn the gold necessary for upgrades was simply engrossing. Not to mention, that was before you fell into a volcano and landed in the world of the first game, where we find out that this is actually the prequel to game 1.

Were I to play it today, I'm sure it would lose a lot of its luster. I probably would prefer 4, now, almost 35 years later. But as far as what it represented to me at the time, Dragon Warrior 3 was one of the greatest games of its era.

EverQuest

This is a sneaky answer I wouldn't have thought of, but there might be some truth to this even though, having played EverQuest for upwards of 250 days /played, I was never all that impressed with it on a technical level from the user's perspective. There just weren't other games like it at the time, though maybe Ultima Online would be a valid or even superior response? idk, never played UO. Or Asheron's Call or those other early MMOs.

Half-Life also sounds like a very valid answer. Won't be surprised if someone else says Doom, either, even though that ran like shit on my computer at the time.

However, if we're considering for the year it came out and not just what was most impressive at decade's end, I think I might go for something like TIE Fighter. X-Wing was decent enough, but TIE Fighter was a vast improvement on a zillion levels and didn't brick my computer without the perfect autoexec and config.sys files.

Wario Land > Warcraft 12-1

Whoa, I was the only voter for Warcraft? I know this site skews console over PC, at least in the 90s, but dayum. (And Wario Land is handheld, not console.)

Like, SML3 is decent enough, but for most, Warcraft was genre-defining since they'd never played Dune. A blowout is fine, but not a single other vote? =/
