bobbyrk 09/17/25 9:13:40 PM #67 | [LFAQs-redacted-quote] Yes. There's been previous mainline games that have had no modern outside-the-Animus gameplay, only cutscenes or not even that, little brief interludes. AC1, 2, Brotherhood and 3 all had significant story work in present day material. Revelations was the first one that didn't, but it did feature stuff that wasn't in the historical setting. Ironically, for a game called Revelations, it didn't really have any... except in the DLC. Black Flag had first person segments that tied into what the previous games were building up to, as well as direct links to characters involved in the in-Animus story. Rogue has the same first person gameplay as Black Flag, but with a different player character. Unity is the first to have no present day gameplay, only cutscenes and video segments. Syndicate is the same way, no present day gameplay. Origins introduces us to a new present day player character named Layla Hassan, and actually ties into the live action movie that they did with Michael Fassbender. Her story continues in Odyssey and ends in Valhalla, which actually There's no present day gameplay in Mirage, but the character you play is one introduced in the in-Animus gameplay in Valhalla. There's no present day gameplay in Shadows, but there's some in-Animus content with "anomalies" happening and the player is talked to by some entity about the new Animus Hub stuff as well as the "anomalies." --- Behold the angry wizard putt-putt-putting away. |

There's a lot of interesting concepts and while I haven't finished all the DLC for Valhalla, it's probably the most lore-heavy of all of the games up to that point, and does a lot to tie together the existing lore while spot-welding its own new stuff on. Shadows didn't have any modern day outside of stuff about the Animus Hub and some anomalies with it, but with the next title they're supposed to be building more up to something else within the modern day. --- Behold the angry wizard putt-putt-putting away. |

bobbyrk 09/17/25 4:48:55 PM #41 | The big issue with removing the Modern Day stuff in Black Flag in the remake is that it actually makes some of the historical lore useless, like a couple of the characters (one of the villains and one who's dead before the events of the game as well) in the Caribbean setting both tie in to a character in the modern day stuff. There's always been a contingent of people who don't like the sci-fi stuff, and there's certainly been games that have done it... poorly, but my interest in the franchise was initially piqued because of the sci-fi framing. --- Behold the angry wizard putt-putt-putting away. |

Im sure rewrites are going to be endless, like they always are. But what Larry and I did was set up certain key relationships, certain key questions, conflicts. And we knew where certain things were going. We had meetings with Rian and Ram Bergman, the producer of VIII. They were watching dailies when we were shooting our movie. We wanted them to be part of the process, to make the transition to their film as seamless as possible. Rian has asked for a couple of things here and there that he needs for his story. He is an incredibly accomplished filmmaker and an incredibly strong writer. So the story he told took what we were doing and went in the direction that he felt was best but that is very much in line with what we were thinking as well. But youre rightthat will be his movie; hes going to do it in the way he sees fit. Hes neither asking for nor does he need me to oversee the process. I suggest reading through that whole SWNN article, there's a lot of quotes in there that show a lot more planning than people think actually happened (and a couple other quotes from Daisy Ridley saying she thought TFA answered all that needed to be said about Rey's parentage)... but no evidence that Abrams had any drafts of VIII or IX. Clone Wars 2003 (ok, technically de-canon'd pre-Disney, but it still pisses me off) and The Force Unleashed come to mind.Neither of those were "confirmed" Canon at any point. Prior to Disney wiping the slate, the old Expanded Universe had a five-level tier system of what was canon, top level of which was always just the movies. The second tier was made just for TCW08, the CGI series. The third tier was what encompassed most of what was left, with the fourth tier being stuff that was old and not really referenced any more, and the bottom tier being stuff that was non-canon, either deliberately designed as such like What-If projects and gag stories, or retconned away by newer material. bobbyrk 08/25/25 9:30:02 AM #133 | I think the issue with Holdo is that rather than saying "yes, I do have a plan, you need to trust me, but I can't trust you with this because of your actions earlier," she instead just... smugly smirks and refuses to answer, to the point where multiple crew members attempt mutiny and others are fleeing while they can. TLJ is a film that is broken into two parts that don't really match up with each other, if it was just the Luke/Rey/Kylo storyline it'd be much better, probably would be the third or fourth best film in the franchise, but everything else about it drags it way down. The random aside to "yeah well it's the war profiteers who are really the bad guys here" is stupid. The Holdo maneuver itself in TLJ isn't gamebreaking, it's that they do it again in TROS that's bad. Hell, the scene in TLJ isn't even the first time in extended media we see ships used as an attack like that. TCW S2 even has a story arc end with a ship being navigated into a planet when its hyperdrive is activated (we never see the outcome), and there's a story from one of the encyclopedias where a planet was devastated because of a similar action. TFA and TROS both have much more egregious hyperspace issues than TLJ. --- Behold the angry wizard putt-putt-putting away. |

bobbyrk 08/11/25 3:28:48 PM #12 | HudGard posted... Im curious. Does the franchise ever detail about how long it takes to get from a more central system to somewhere on the outer rim?Depends on source material. The oldest RPG books and a couple of the 90s novels pegged it as days to weeks to cross the galaxy. Those were always... secondary at best to the films, which largely run travel time as speed of plot, but still rather short. So like in the original film, we see them travel from Tatooine to Alderaan. Tatooine is in the Outer Rim, while Alderaan is in the core. Taking what we see in the film as is, without handwaving a bunch of extra time that isn't really implied elsewhere (except in the aforementioned RPG material) it doesn't seem like maybe more than an hour or so passes. In Empire Strikes Back, if we take a comment literally, when the Imperials are searching for the heroes while they're hiding, one says they "could be halfway across the galaxy by now," in yet again a very brief period that couldn't be more than a couple hours. --- Behold the angry wizard putt-putt-putting away. |
