Did I miss what exactly made El lose her powers? Was it just overexertion or something the meatball mind flayer did to her?

Overexertion, and how many times she tried to find people with a blindfold on. Mike was very concerned using her so often would take a toll on her. When she tried to find Billy, that session clearly drained her and sapped her of her powers more than usual, when she tried to exit and Billy grabbed her arm, then she took the blindfold off and her friends weren't there initially. That session sapped her, then she was greatly weakened when the thing messed up her leg.

So I think it was a combination of her being used to find people with her mind so often, which has to be much more draining than simply closing a door with her mind or something basic, that may even be more draining than physically moving stuff or fighting monsters or people. The intensity of finding Billy and seeing his thoughts drained her, then the thing injuring her leg weakened her overall which obviously affected her energy levels and her ability to use her powers.

Yeah they were showing that she was clearly over exerting herself the whole season. She was constantly bleeding from her nose.

I played through it and there were certainly good parts to it, but it felt like they had two different ideas for the game and just combined them rather than settling on one.

Yeah the best way to describe FFXV is unrealized potential. It doesnt do a terrible but there was a lot of things you know they could have done better that they just didnt do.

Shouldn't it be pansexual? Doesn't bisexual imply that gender is binary? IS THE TERM BISEXUAL TRANSPHOBIC!?

No. The individual is nonbinary that doesnt mean they believe everyone else is nonbinary.

It's literally disorder, because they have to undergo a surgery to make it right

and even then there's a chance things still won't feel right

i can't imagine most of these surgeries are safe or go off without any unseen consequences

Depends. Male to female transition and surgery is quite impressive and can be basically indistinguishable. We had a transgender symposium at my med school. We had a surgeon showing their transition surgery work. Female to Male is unfortunately no where near on the level. Making a penis is far more complex than making a vagina sadly. Satisfaction rates with the surgery are poor.

I mean, if the primary means of treatment is physical, it makes sense to not call it a mental disorder. The treatment approach acknowledges that the problem is with the body, not the mind. It may shift back to mental if future developments in treatment start favouring cognitive approaches. It may not. Only time will tell, so everyone should just shut up and let science do its job.

Lokarin posted...
Is something that's not part of the median/mean a disorder by default?

It's abnormal (a term which carries far more pejorative connotations than it ought to, given how statistically objective it is), but in order to qualify as a disorder, an aberration has to have a significant negative impact on the person and those around them. Heterochromia, for example, is very much abnormal, but nobody would really call it a disorder because it's generally not going to hurt those people.

Of course, there's some room for argument about classifying something as a disorder when negative effects arise from how other people respond to the condition, rather than anything intrinsic. If, for example, it were common for heterochromic people to be lynched in the streets, one could argue that heterochromia would qualify as a disorder, and declassify it as such if society progressed to a point where that was no longer true. This is basically what happened with homosexuality between the DSM3 and DSM4.

I mean gender dysphoria was always more complicated than a mental disorder. I would argue the problem though is entirely psychiatric in nature. Functionally speaking, no other body system is working incorrectly. The negative impacts of it are mental not physical health. Which is the realm of psychiatry. You physically treat depression with drugs. That is just as physical as giving a gender dysphoric MtF estrogen. The purpose of this renaming is basically political. Transgender doesn't want to be associated with mental health problems as a stigma despite a large portion of the transgender community not having gender dysphoria. I'm annoyed by this change because its a change that doesn't make a ton of sense.

I don't mind them being dischargeable in bankruptcy.

So basically you don't mind bankrupting the entire university system along with multiple major lenders and triggering a national recession? Wow, that's evil!

Implying that it isn't going to happen at some point anyway ?

With the way tuitions keep hiking and people keep failing to find jobs that pay them back you know that the only way out of this hole so many people are in is government intervention. The main problem being that getting a college degree is a prerequisite for a lot of jobs so people have to go out and get in debt just to be able to try to fail to get a job. That's not even considering just how hard our society pushes going to college without a clear plan on what to do with the degree. People are simply told that going to college gets you a job because that is what everyone told them. Try to suggest someone doesnt need to go to college and you will get a lot of resistance. Basically everything is set up in such a way right now that this problem is going to continue to get worse until it basically blows up. The right just hates doing anything about anything until its beyond repair while the left tries to do something about it ahead of time.

The only thing all the conservative people are arguing against is whether we do something to prevent a recession (which may cause one anyway) or after the current education economic bubble pops and we get a pretty nasty one with another series of bank bailouts.

I've been trying to put my finger on what exactly was wrong with episode 5. I think honestly the material they had in a different order would have worked better. As it stands I think they're trying to go for Mad Queen Dany that's gone insane. It doesn't work with how the season has been playing out. Instead we've really been getting more of a lonely, betrayed, grieving kind of Dany that is the angry kind of mad. I would have found her actions more believable if say the Missandei thing had happened very early on followed by them pulling back and discussing the bell stuff. They go to battle and during battle we lose one of the dragons which leaves Dany in rage to destroy king's landing and not give a shit when the bells go off.

I think this the direction the story is...supposed to go. its just being so hamfistedly crammed into 6 episodes and one season that it seems forced and stupid. I don't know why HBO would want to give up on more seasons of game of thrones and throw together this mess of a season when they had a lot of subscribers just for this show.

Have you decided on a specialization?

Most people don't really have one until the end of the third year because we start rotations at hospitals third year. That being said I did a fair amount of shadowing before going in and worked at an ER and have a very strong leaning to Emergency Medicine. There has been very little that has shifted me away from it. I was considering Orthopedic (Bone) Surgery at some point but unless something makes me fall in love with it the amount of effort, lack of sleep, and years you have to invest into it...it will ultimately not be worth it if you can like anything else.

miki_sauvester posted...
Do you think youll actually use everything or even most of what youre learning? I have friends who graduated from law school who have told me that 80%+ of what they learned in school was useless, and that they didnt really learn until they started working. Always wondered if med school was the same.

Medicine and Law are the same in the sense that you have some pretty high level specialization so you will only ever really need to know what you're good at. For that reason most people don't have to know more than 20% of what they ever learned in school. Medical school is taught with the assumption you can be any one of those specialists so it teaches you a good chunk of basically everything. You can easily have to remember more than 20% of what you learned if you do a really broad field like internal medicine and do basic science/clinical research. On the other hand, surgeons dump nearly all medical science from their brain (some fields of surgery more than others for example a general surgeon will probably remember some small amount medicine but an orthopedic surgeon basically remembers...nothing) because anything that wasn't anatomy has become useless to them.

I do it for the love. I love studying medicine. Its friggen awesome but it definitely has had its stress with just the sheer amount of knowledge we are expected to absorb in a short amount of time.

The grossest thing? Anatomy Lab is a pretty gross thing in general (pun intended =P.) Personally, it probably would be dissecting a man's penis, scrotum and testicles. I am not a squeamish person but I had a visceral reaction to it (cutting them in half) and had to stop half way through. I am sure most people would name something else like having to saw off the head or saw the leg off or just in general having to dissect the colon (there's still shit in there for all of them) and stuff.
