Slaves would actually solve the issue for the rich since, by virtue of being property that needs to be taken care of to a minimum degree, slaves would actually be able to have children without worrying about their finances. You know, not HAVING finances beyond any sort of company/good behavior scrip or stuff like that, if even that.

There are penalties and taxes if withdrawing from 401k before a certain age. Did you account for that?

Heres an example. Say you want to retire at 45, and you anticipate needing $50,000 a year to live comfortably. Because you have to wait five years to withdraw each converted amount, you start building your ladder at age 40 by doing a Roth IRA conversion for $50,000.

The following year, you do another Roth IRA conversion for $50,000, and so on until you reach age 54. At that point, the series of conversions you already did will cover you through age 59. Thats when you can start taking penalty-free withdrawals from your other retirement accounts and tax- and penalty-free withdrawals from your Roth IRA (if you still have a balance).

Note that this strategy requires you to have $250,000 in retirement savings to convert. The same technique can be employed using lower amounts, of courseor higher ones. Ideally, you would plan early in retirement to have saved enough in your tax-advantaged retirement accounts to create a conversion ladder that will yield what you need.

Honestly, it becomes harder to defend even the civilians with each new story like this that comes out.

As a disability support worker who drives sick people to doctor appointments every day, there's nothing more infuriating than keen cyclists and ebike enthusiasts telling me there's no need for cars any more (and I've had 2 people tell me this)

To the debate about groceries; I've seen a lot of people tout the benefits of cargo bikes for exactly that purpose. You can't fill up a trunk load necessarily but there are steps between that and carrying everything by hand.

Not gonna read this whole topic but I live in a walkable neighborhood of a city that isnt even very big and it rules

we live within a ~mile walking distance of dozens of restaurants, multiple music venues, a grocery store, our clinic, eye doctor, dentist, etc

I haven't had to buy any sort of real estate in literally 19 years so I know the game has changed, but if people are willing to pay for it, why would anyone charge LESS than what the market is dictating.

How does "supply and demand" not apply here?

When people talk about 15 minute walkable cities, what they're pitching isn't your average European city. There's also the fact that cars are double or triple parked all over the place because these cities were built well before cars were common place. If I walk out of an apartment on the edge of the beltway in Rome, or if I'm in downtown Athens, I'm not suddenly magically 15 minutes away from my job, and also 15 minutes away from the grocery store, and also 15 minutes away from entertainment. A city being so old that it can't realistically support traffic is not the same as a city designed to eliminate it.

And they aren't creating both.

That's my entire point.
