https://www.npr.org/2024/06/14/g-s1-2929/supreme-court-bump-stocks

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on bump stocks Friday, declaring that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives exceeded its authority when it banned the devices on grounds they convert otherwise legal semi-automatic weapons into illegal machine guns. The vote was 6-3, with the courts three liberals in angry dissent.
Writing for the courts conservative supermajority, Justice Clarence Thomas noted that a semi-automatic rifle equipped with a bump stock is not a "machine gun" because it does not fire more than one shot "by a single function of the trigger," as the statute requires. He added that even if it could, it would not do so automatically. He wrote that the ATF exceeded its statutory authority by classifying bump stocks as machine guns.
In a concurring opinion, Justice Samuel Alito wrote that "the Congress that enacted" the law at issue here "would not have seen any material difference between a machinegun and a semiautomatic rifle equipped with a bumpstock. But the statutory text is clear, and we must follow it." He added that Congress could if it wanted amend the law.
The question before the court was whether a bump stock converted a semi-automatic weapon into a machine gun. The court said it does not.
President Trump ordered the ATF to ban the sale and possession of bump stocks in 2018 after a single gunman in Las Vegas, using multiple guns modified by bump stocks, killed 60 people and wounded 400 more all in the space of 11 minutes. Machine guns have been illegal in the U.S. since 1934, almost a century, and Congress has twice amended the National Firearms Act to say that machine gun parts themselves count as machine guns.
The case was bought by the owner of a gun shop in Austin, Texas, who was forced to surrender two bump stocks after the ban went into effect. On Friday, the Supreme Court, siding with him, ruled that the ban on bump stocks went too far.
Writing for the dissenters, Justice Sonia Sotomayor accused the conservative majority of once again turning a blind eye to the reality of gun violence, and making it yet more difficult to adopt measures aimed at preventing bloodshed. She said the "majority's artificially narrow definition hamstrings the Government's efforts to keep machineguns from gunmen like the Las Vegas shooter."
"When I see a bird that walks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck," Sotomayor wrote.
President Biden, in a statement, criticized the decision, adding: "Americans should not have to live in fear of this mass devastation."
"I call on Congress to ban bump stocks, pass an assault weapon ban, and take additional action to save lives send me a bill and I will sign it immediately," he said.
The prospects of such a law passing Congress are slim to none.

https://www.npr.org/2024/06/14/nx-s1-4991095/alex-jones-bankruptcy-sandy-hook-judge-liquidate-chapter7

Its a day of reckoning today for Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and a long-awaited culmination for the Sandy Hook families who sued Jones for defamation. A federal bankruptcy judge in Texas has decided that Jones must sell off his personal assets through a Chapter 7 liquidation in order to pay families nearly $1.5 billion in damages for spreading lies that the 2012 school shooting never happened.
The judge is still considering whether Jones media company, Free Speech Systems, should also be converted to a Chapter 7 liquidation. The families who sued Jones are divided on whether that is the best path forward. But one way or another, the company that produces Jones Infowars show will also be sold and either shut down or reimagined by a new buyer with proceeds going to pay the families.
A written order is expected later today, and a trustee could take over control of Jones personal estate within hours. Liquidation means Jones' personal belongings from his gun collection to his jewelry will be auctioned to the highest bidder in something of a fire sale. He could even lose access to his account on X, where he currently has 2.3 million followers. However, Texas law allows him to keep his home, which is worth more than $2 million.
The families declined to comment ahead of the court hearing, but one of their attorneys, Avi Moshenberg, said Jones' personal liquidation would be "a victory in the sense that [Jones] is going to pay a heavy price" for what he did, adding, "It will be a big step toward dismantling [Jones'] ability to inflict any more harm on the families."
On the other hand, the plaintiffs are likely to collect only a tiny fraction of what they're owed, and bankruptcy is unlikely to silence Jones fully, as some families had hoped. "You cant force him to shut up through a Chapter 7 liquidation," Moshenberg said. Jones had proposed a settlement with families that would have barred him from talking about the Sandy Hook shooting, but for various other reasons, that offer failed.
Families in Texas want the judge to just dismiss the Free Speech Systems bankruptcy case. They say that will result in more money more quickly. But Connecticut families say a Chapter 7 liquidation would ensure a more orderly and equitable distribution of the proceeds. Also, they say it would prevent Jones from using Infowars to bolster some new company he could be building and that it would stop him from draining the company of its value. For example, telling his audience not to buy vitamin supplements from Infowars and instead purchase them from a new company owned by Jones' dad.
A court appointed trustee for FSS agrees with Texas families that Jones' company should also be converted to a Chapter 7 liquidation. She called Jones behavior in recent broadcasts much more erratic and unhinged than his typical rhetoric and expressed concern that his increasingly poisonous rhetoric including promoting new Sandy Hook conspiracies is diminishing the value of his estate and any eventual payout for families.

Well yeah it would put into question how the FDA approved drugs and jam up the whole system.

"6. The drug industry could face destabilizing uncertainty
Drugmakers are quite concerned about the mifepristone case. Hundreds of drug company executives signed a letter last year in support of FDA's authority to regulate medications without judicial interference. Many also submitted an amicus brief.
"This case is about mifepristone right now it's about one medicine, but it really could be any medicine, " Dr. Amanda Banks, a consultant who signed the amicus brief, said in a press conference this month organized by the ACLU.
"The [FDA] regulatory process that we rely upon as an industry is rigorous and long and it's expensive," she explained, adding that it's not a perfect process, but it's predictable. If it can be undone by plaintiffs who morally object to a medicine and friendly federal courts, that predictability goes out the window, she said.
The uncertainty could affect investors and drug companies and "could put innovation for new drugs and much, much needed therapies for patients, not just in the United States, but globally, at fundamental risk," Banks said.
It could also set a new precedent, Ziegler adds. "Any drug could get a second look from federal judges who are not reviewing as much evidence [as FDA scientists], or are not competent to review as much evidence, because they don't like the way the FDA handled it," she says.
In another amicus brief, former FDA commissioners argued that drug companies could make use a precedent set by this case to challenge a competitor's FDA approval. Or, they write, "organizations representing patients who experience rare adverse events could challenge FDA's risk-benefit analyses and attempt to bar access to safe and effective remedies for others who need them."
"I think that's why the pharmaceutical industry is nervous," Ziegler says. "They're saying, if this could happen with mifepristone, which has a very, very low complication rate and which is very, very well studied because it's been controversial, then what would stop anyone from doing it with every other drug?"

Israel is a fascist state that monitors and arrest people for not being pro war enough

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-67181582
"Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, police in Israel have adopted what they call a "zero tolerance policy" towards social media activity deemed to express support for Hamas, an Islamist group which is committed to the destruction of Israel and designated as a terrorist group by Israel, as well as the US, UK, and many other countries.
Ms Abu Amneh is one of dozens of Arab citizens of Israel arrested in connection with social media posts about the war.
Many others have been suspended or sacked from their jobs or face disciplinary action from their universities.
Israeli Arabs - many of whom prefer to be called Palestinian citizens of Israel - make up a fifth of the country's population.
Since Hamas's attack, police say they have investigated and detained more than 100 people for their social media activity. Sixty-three have been arrested and questioned in Jerusalem alone.
"Anyone inciting against the State of Israel, its government symbols, elected officials, military personnel and police, should be aware that the Israel Police will respond firmly and without leniency," said Israel's Police Commissioner, Yaakov Shabtai, at a meeting with senior leaders this week."

Yes trump could easily cause a constitutional crisis and create a situation where armed forces are either forced to follow the commander in chief or uphold the constitution.

An ad hoc Electoral Commission, created by Congress, voted along party lines in favor of Republican candidate Rutherford B. https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2024/05/10/trump-promises-rollback-on-trans-rights-heres-what-hes-said/?sh=434ed6fbdae0

Trump said on day one he would reverse the Biden administrations expansion of Title IX that will prohibit federally funded schools from preventing transgender students from using bathrooms, locker rooms and pronouns that align with their gender identities.
Trump told a crowd in Iowa in March he would sign an executive order to cut federal funding for schools pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children.
In January, he released a video detailing a range of policies targeting gender-affirming care for minors, including pressing Congress to approve a federal ban and several measures to restrict federal funding when it came to trans issues.
Trump said he would block doctors who provide gender-affirming care from Medicare and Medicaid, forbid federal agencies from actions to promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age, and task the Justice Department with investigating the medical industry to see if they deliberately covered up horrific long-term side effects of sex transitions in order to get rich.
In the video, Trump laid out additional plans for extending the restrictions to schools, promising severe consequences, including potential civil rights violations, for educators who suggest to a child they could be trapped in the wrong body.

Biden's turn to the middle will continue

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/23/white-house-oregan-turn-towards-center-00159588
exerts:
The defeat of a liberal Portland prosecutor at the hands of a tough-on-crime challenger has hardened a view among top White House officials that Democrats need to further distance themselves from their left flank on law-and-order issues.
In the wake of the voter backlash over public safety in Oregon, Joe Bidens aides this week argued the results served as validation of their long-running concerns that crime and an immigration crisis at the southern border risk overwhelming the presidents case for reelection especially if the broader party is seen as soft on both fronts.
Particularly right now, Americans dont want to feel like things are out of control, said one Biden official, who was granted anonymity to offer candid views about tensions within the party. Well-meaning ideas have gone too far, and we need a sensible approach.
The White House is banking on the idea that voters will reward them for public efforts to crack down on immigration and boost spending on law enforcement and, perhaps as importantly, that the liberal forces that so effectively moved the party away from those planks in 2020 wont punish the president come November.
Inside the West Wing, senior counselor Steve Ricchetti has been among the leading voices making this case, while also advocating for more toughness on the border, according to the Biden official and one other, both granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.
But the president has not needed much convincing, the officials said, having personally favored an approach that emphasizes more traditional support for law enforcement alongside criminal justice reforms. Biden spent much of his half century in politics as an ardent advocate for law enforcement and anti-crime measures, a reputation that complicated his path to the 2020 Democratic nomination amid scrutiny over his role in passing a controversial 1994 crime bill.

There is also deep-seated fear throughout the party of the alternative: A Trump presidency that has made clear it would prioritize mass deportations and sharp shifts away from the progress Biden has made on other criminal justice issues like gun violence prevention.
In some cases, progressives are suffering setbacks because people are frustrated in those particular locales with notions of policy. In some cases, progressives are winning, said Paul Maslin, a longtime Democratic pollster. But the truth is, we need both our bases and the middle, and we dont have the luxury of picking one or the other.
