The bodies have been identified by authorities and the families have been informed, Hagari said.

IDF says 3 soldiers lightly wounded during clashes with Israeli settlers over Gaza aid
From CNN's Tamar Michaelis and Tim Lister
The Israel Defense Forces says three soldiers were wounded on Thursday night during clashes with right-wing settlers in the occupied West Bank who were trying to stop a truck they believed was heading for Gaza.
The driver of the truck was also wounded. Images from the scene showed the truck ablaze.
The IDF said Friday: Last night, a report was received regarding an attack by dozens of Israeli citizens on an Israeli driver who was wounded and whose truck was set on fire at the Kohav HaShachar junction.
Upon receiving the report, IDF forces arrived at the scene and acted to separate the attackers from the driver and provide the driver with medical treatment.
Dozens of Israeli citizens responded with violence against the forces. As a result, two IDF officers and an additional IDF soldier were lightly injured and were treated at the scene, the IDF added.
The IDF condemns any violence against its soldiers and security forces and will take action to ensure legal accountability.

Right-wing Israelis rally for settlements in Gaza
Tens of thousands of far-right protesters in the southern city of Sderot, in Israel, called for the construction of settlements in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, as right-wing rhetoric over Israel's military campaign in the enclave gains momentum.
People marched in a returning home demonstration for extensive settlement in the Gaza Strip to guarantee the achievements of the war. Israeli settlement in the Gaza Strip would correct the past mistakes of Oslo and the disengagement,'" organizers said, adding that 50,000 people attended. CNN could not confirm the number of attendees and Israeli police does not provide attendance figures for rallies.
Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir told the rally that officials must work towards "encouraging immigration. To encourage the voluntary departure of the residents of Gaza. Such language has prompted accusations against far-right Israelis of advocating to ethnically cleanse Palestinians in Gaza.

IDF says it struck UN school in Gaza that it claims was being used by Hamas
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it struck a Hamas war room embedded inside a school operated by the United Nations' agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Tuesday.
The IDF claimed the room was being used by Hamas commanders and that over 10 members of the group were killed in the strike. CNN cannot independently confirm the IDF claim.
A UNRWA official said the agency is not able to confirm the claims from the Israeli military.
Like we have said on several occasions, any report of a violation of a UN premises must be investigated. We remind all parties to the conflict that UN installations must be protected at all times and must never be used for military purposes/ fighting purposes, Juliette Touma, UNRWAs director of communications, told CNN in a statement.
Al Awda hospital in Gaza said it had received 11 bodies from this strike.
Based on IDF and ISA intelligence, the IAF carried out a precise strike on a central Hamas war room commanders embedded inside an UNRWA school in the area of Nuseirat," the IDF said.
"The war room was used by terrorist operatives in Hamas' military wing. The strike was carried out using precise munitions in order to minimize harm to uninvolved civilians."
The IDF went on to claim that the war room had been used by Hamas to plan multiple attacks against IDF troops in central Gaza in recent weeks.
The Israeli military also confirmed a strike on a second location in Nuseirat on Tuesday, claiming they struck "terrorist infrastructure."
Gaza's Al Aqsa hospital said it had received bodies of 36 people including 18 children from this strike.
Rescue workers have continued efforts to find bodies underneath the rubble of a four-story building that was demolished in the strike, witnesses said. They also said that dozens of people had been sheltering in the buildings yard.
The strike at the UNRWA school occurred about two hours after the strike on the four-story building, according to witnesses.

Netanyahu makes implicit criticisms of Biden after US warning on weapon supplies
From CNN's Lauren Izso and Tim Lister
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel is ready to stand alone if necessary as it continues its military campaign in Gaza, in what appeared to be an indirect response to the US' warnings over its actions in Rafah.
Netanyahu said in a message to the Israeli people on the eve of the countrys Independence Day: Today we are much stronger. We are determined and we are united to defeat our enemy and those who seek our souls.
If we have to stand alone, we will stand alone. I already said that if we have to -- we will fight tooth and nail," he said.
It seemed to come in response to an announcement by US President Joe Biden on Wednesday that the United States would halt deliveries of some weapons to Israel if it continues its campaign into the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
Striking a defiant note, Netanyahu said: In the War of Independence 76 years ago, we were few against many. We had no weapons, there was an arms embargo on Israel, but with the greatness of spirit, bravery and unity among us - we won.

RFK Jr. is all over conservative media. Trumps camp is concerned.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.s increasingly frequent appearances on conservative media platforms are beginning to raise alarms at Mar-a-Lago.
Its another sign of the rising threat that Kennedy, the independent presidential candidate, poses to Trump.
In recent months, Kennedy has become a regular on Fox News and Newsmax, and he is now a staple on the conservative podcast circuit being interviewed by the likes of Ben Shapiro, Glenn Beck and Megyn Kelly. While railing against President Joe Biden, Kennedy is actively courting an audience with the young listeners of bro podcasters and conservative-coded YouTubers that skew anti-woke.
Thats squarely on Trumps turf, not Bidens.
It is concerning and beyond logic, said Chris LaCivita, Trumps co-campaign manager, that there are some conservative platforms that continue to give a voice to someone that has called the NRA a terrorist group, who believes in eliminating gas powered engines, believes in a 70% tax bracket and generally subscribes to the same school of thought as Karl Marx.
Two other senior Republicans close to Trumps campaign and granted anonymity to speak freely similarly expressed frustration about Kennedys appearances on conservative airwaves.
Though Kennedy has been popular with conservative media since he initially launched his candidacy as a Democrat, his frequent appearances on Trump-aligned platforms now come as he runs as an independent candidate who could cut into Trumps support. The former president this past weekend went on multiple tirades about Kennedy on his Truth Social site, declaring him a Democrat Plant and far more LIBERAL than anyone running as a Democrat. And he said A Vote for Junior would essentially be a WASTED PROTEST VOTE.
Kennedy, meanwhile, is talking to millions of right-leaning voters on traditional conservative platforms. A POLITICO analysis of Kennedys 69 media appearances since January, as listed on his campaigns website, found a plurality of them nearly half were with conservative, libertarian-leaning, or openly anti-woke hosts, with the remaining interviews divided between liberal, politically neutral, and spiritual or environmentalist hosts.

They see an opening, they see a robust ecosystem on the right that they can pull votes from, said Matt Gorman, a former communications adviser for Sen. Tim Scotts presidential campaign, referring to Kennedy. I think sometimes, Republicans tend to lull ourselves into believing, Oh, hes just taking votes from Biden. No, hes going after everybody.
Kennedy has also taken on championing one of Trumps top policy issues: closing the U.S. border. Thats in addition to questioning the legitimacy of the charges brought against rioters at the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol, a cohort who Trump has praised and suggested he would pardon.
In a statement to POLITICO, Shapiro, one of the conservative hosts who has interviewed Kennedy, described him as a fascinating figure worth interviewing.
RFK Jr is the highest polling third-party candidate since Ross Perot, Shapiro said. Hes a fascinating figure and I regularly interview newsworthy people across the political spectrum on my show. With that said, Ive made clear that I support President Trumps reelection effort, and have even co-hosted a campaign event for him.
While polling averages show Trump with a slight lead over Biden in most swing states, Kennedy is currently averaging 8 to 10 percent of the vote in those states, drawing about evenly from both major-party candidates.
A Monmouth poll released this week shows 17 percent of voters have an unfavorable view of both Biden and Trump sometimes referred to as double haters and tend to be younger. Among voters under 35 years old, 27 percent fall into that category, the poll found, while Kennedys overall favorability rating has gone up by double digits among both independents and Republicans since December.
And a survey of under-30 voters conducted in April for Snapchat by SocialSphere, which is owned by Harvard pollster John Della Volpe, found that 52 percent of those young voters were at least considering a vote for Kennedy.
If Kennedys appearances on conservative media are frustrating to Trumps campaign, Kennedys supporters are reveling in the increased attention that Trumps broadsides against the candidate have given him.
No one is worried that Kennedy is on Trumps radar, a person familiar with the Kennedy campaign said, adding its seen as free advertising.
One Republican strategist speaking on condition of anonymity noted that Kennedy seems to be following a strategy employed by a number of GOP candidates in recent years trying to drive up their name recognition among conservatives not just going on conservative television channels like Fox News and Newsmax, but taking advantage of the proliferation of right-leaning podcasts and other programming.
In a way Kennedys taken the tack of a B-level Republican Senate candidate, the GOP strategist said.

Netanyahu vows to invade Rafah with or without a deal as cease-fire talks with Hamas continue
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged Tuesday to launch an incursion into the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are sheltering from the almost 7-month-long war, just as cease-fire negotiations between Israel and Hamas appear to be gaining steam.
Netanyahus comments came hours before U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was to arrive in Israel to advance the truce talks which appear to be one of the most serious rounds of negotiations between Israel and Hamas since the war began. The deal is meant to free hostages, bring some relief to the population and avert an Israeli offensive into Rafah and the potential harm to civilians there.
Netanyahu said Israel would enter Rafah, which Israel says is Hamas last stronghold, regardless of whether a truce-for-hostages deal is struck. His comments appeared to be meant to appease his nationalist governing partners but it was not clear whether they would have any bearing on any emerging deal with Hamas.
The idea that we will stop the war before achieving all of its goals is out of the question, Netanyahu said, according to a statement from his office. We will enter Rafah and we will eliminate Hamas battalions there with or without a deal, to achieve the total victory.
The U.S. has repeatedly said it opposes the Rafah operation until Israel presents a credible plan for evacuating and protecting the estimated 1.5 million people seeking shelter there.

Blinken, speaking in Jordan before flying to Israel, said the focus right now is on improving the humanitarian situation and reaching a cease-fire deal that brings Israeli hostages home. He said Israel has offered a strong proposal and called on Hamas to respond.
No more delays. No more excuses. The time to act is now, he said. We want to see in the coming days this agreement coming together.
Netanyahu has faced pressure from his governing partners not to proceed with a deal that might prevent Israel from invading Rafah. His government could be threatened if he agrees to a deal because hardline Cabinet members have demanded an attack on Rafah.
Netanyahu met on Tuesday with one of those partners, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, according to the ministers office, who said Netanyahu promised him that Israel will enter Rafah, promised that we are not stopping the war and promised that there wont be a reckless deal.
With more than half of Gazas 2.3 million people sheltering in Rafah, the international community, including Israels top ally, the United States, has warned Israel against any offensive that puts civilians at risk.
Netanyahu on Tuesday was addressing the Tikva Forum, a small group of families of hostages thats distinct from the main group representing the families of captive Israelis. The forum has indicated that it prefers to see Hamas crushed over the freedom of their loved ones. Most families and their supporters have demonstrated in the thousands every week for a deal that would bring the hostages home, saying it should take precedence over military action.
Netanyahus coalition is made up of ultranationalist and conservative religious parties, and critics of the Israeli leader say his decision-making during the war has been driven by political considerations rather than national interests, a charge Netanyahu denies. His government could collapse if one of the parties opposed to a deal pulls out, a scenario Netanyahu would try to avoid considering his support has plummeted in opinion polls since the war began, although it has seen a slight gradual uptick.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who heads the ultranationalist Religious Zionist party, said Monday that he was seeking total annihilation of Israels enemies, appearing to refer to Hamas, in a recorded portion of his remarks at an event marking the end of the Passover holiday which were aired in Israeli media.
You cant do half a job, he said.
The current deal being discussed, brokered by the U.S., Egypt and Qatar, would see the release of dozens of hostages in exchange for a six-week halt in fighting as part of an initial phase, according to an Egyptian official and Israeli media. Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel would also be released, including some serving long sentences.
Blinken, who was meeting with regional leaders in Saudi Arabia and Jordan before landing in Tel Aviv later Tuesday, urged Hamas on Monday to accept the latest proposal, calling it extraordinarily generous on Israels part.
But a sticking point remains over what happens next. Hamas has demanded assurances that an eventual release of all hostages will bring a complete end to Israels nearly seven-month assault in Gaza and a withdrawal of its troops from the devastated territory. Israel has offered only an extended pause, vowing to resume its offensive once the first phase of the deal is over. The issue has repeatedly obstructed efforts by the mediators during months of talks.
The Israel-Hamas war was sparked by the unprecedented Oct. 7 raid into southern Israel in which militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted around 250 hostages. Israel says the militants are still holding around 100 hostages and the remains of more than 30 others.
The war in Gaza has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health officials. The war has driven around 80% of Gazas population of 2.3 million from their homes, caused vast destruction in several towns and cities and pushed northern Gaza to the brink of famine.

Regarding the US civil war in particular, the main problem is that after the war, there was way too much meaningless talk, and way too little actual reconstruction. In fact, the Union won the war and lost the peace.

That loss was because too few in the rest of the country had the stomach to do what would have been necessary to prevent resentful ex-Confederates from instituting Jim Crow after the end of military occupation.
Jefferson Davis and his cabinet were not hanged or imprisoned for being part of a rebellion. Republicans should face ballot removal for supporting an insurrection but Trump and allies faced no recorse.

EU follows adding sanctions.

EU sanctions "extremist settlers" in occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem
From CNNs Catherine Nicholls and Benjamin Brown in London
The European Union has imposed sanctions on extremist settlers in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, the European Council announced on Friday, listing four people and two entities.
According to the statement, the entities Lehava, a radical right-wing Jewish supremacist group, and Hilltop Youth, a radical youth group consisting of members known for violent acts against Palestinians and their villages in the West Bank, were added to the EU sanctions regime alongside two leading figures of Hilltop Youth, Meir Ettinger and Elisha Yered.
Neria Ben Pazi, who the EU's governing body said has been accused of repeatedly attacking Palestinians, and Yinon Levi, who the council said has taken part in multiple violent acts against neighbouring villages, were also added to the listing.
The EUs top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said in a post on X that the EU has decided to sanction extremist settlers in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem for serious human rights abuses against Palestinians. We strongly condemn extremist settler violence: perpetrators must be held to account.
Belgiums Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib said that she welcomes the sanctions, adding that the recent escalation of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank must stop; these settlers must be held accountable.

Doesn't mean much as Israel last month already declared more land for the state.
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-approves-new-parcel-west-bank-land-settlement-2024-03-22/

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Friday declared 800 hectares in the occupied West Bank as state land, in a move that will facilitate the use of the ground for settlement building.
The announcement, on the day U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Israel for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, underlined the government's determination to press ahead with settlement building in the West Bank, despite growing international opposition.
"While there are those in Israel and in the world who seek to undermine our right to Judea and Samaria and the country in general, we promote settlement through hard work and in a strategic manner all over the country," Smotrich said, using Biblical names for the area of the West Bank that are commonly employed in Israel.
The denomination of the 1,976 acres of land in the Jordan Valley as state land follows a similar designation of 300 hectares (740 acres) in the Maale Adumim area of the West Bank, which the Palestinians want as the core of a future independent state.
The United States said last month Israel's expansion of settlements in West Bank was inconsistent with international law, signalling a return to long-standing U.S. policy that had been reversed by the previous administration of Donald Trump.
The change brought the United States back into line with most of the world, which considers the settlements built on territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war to be illegal. Israel itself disputes this view, citing the Jewish people's historical and Biblical ties to the land.
The Palestinians say the expansion of settlements across the West Bank is part of a deliberate Israeli policy to undermine its ambition of creating an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the latest move was "a continuation of the extermination and displacement of our people from their homeland".
"The international failure to protect our people is complicity and cover for Israel's ongoing evasion of punishment," it added.

Treasury department imposes sanctions on two groups for fundraising for Israeli extremists in West Bank
From CNNs Jennifer Hansler, Kylie Atwood and Alex Marquardt
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two organizations on Friday for fundraising on behalf of two violent Israeli extremists in the West Bank.
The two groups -- Mount Hebron Fund and Shlom Asiraich established crowdfunding campaigns to raise thousands of dollars for Yinon Levi and David Chai Chasdai respectively. Both of those men were sanctioned by the US in February under a new executive order targeting those perpetrating violence in the West Bank.
At the same time, the State Department on Friday sanctioned Ben-Zion Gopstein, the founder and leader of Lehava, an organization whose members have engaged in violence, including assaults on Palestinian civilians, the Treasury Department said in a statement Friday.
The executive order, issued by President Joe Biden in early February, came amid increased violence in the occupied West Bank in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack. That violence has only continued in subsequent months.
The order angered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who complained to the administration, calling it inappropriate and highly problematic, according to Axios.

Israel insists troops involved in settler violence will face discipline, after NGO accuses IDF of failing to protect Palestinians
From CNNs Benjamin Brown in London
Israeli soldiers who fail to protect Palestinians from settler violence or take part in such attacks face disciplinary action, the Israeli military told CNN on Friday, in response to a critical report from an international NGO.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) comments came after Human Rights Watch accused the IDF of failing to protect Palestinians in the occupied West Bank from violent attacks by settlers since October 7 and on some occasions taking part in those attacks.
HRW said in its report that such attacks have displaced Palestinians from 20 communities and entirely uprooted at least seven communities.
The IDF said that its mission was to maintain the security of all residents of the area, and to act to prevent terrorism and activities that endanger the citizens of the State of Israel.
If Israeli citizens break the law, the Israeli police are responsible for arresting and charging them, the IDF said. The IDF conceded that its troops had witnessed some Israelis attacking Palestinians.

TikTok, which is owned by the Beijing-based company ByteDance, has repeatedly denied a relationship with the Chinese government and sought to distance itself from its Chinese origins. But now, with the fate of legislation to force the sale of the company facing an uncertain path forward in the Senate, the Chinese Embassy appears to be leveraging its political weight to protect the companys future in the United States.

The meetings with Hill staff were initiated by the Chinese Embassy in outreach that did not initially mention TikTok, according to the congressional staffers, one of whom worked for the House and the other for the Senate, and who were granted anonymity to discuss conversations that they were not authorized to reveal publicly. The meetings, which took place with Chinese diplomats, were held after the House in March overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, the legislation that would force ByteDance to sell TikTok.

Additionally, in a separate phone call to set up a meeting, an embassy official said that the Chinese ambassador was interested in discussing, among other matters, the Houses TikTok bill, according to a third staffer, a Democratic Senate aide who was approached. The embassy downplayed the national security concerns with TikTok in both meetings, the two staffers said, and sought to align the app with American interests: In one meeting, the embassy said a ban on TikTok would harm U.S. investors who hold some ownership in ByteDance. In the other, the embassy emphasized that not all ByteDance board members were Chinese nationals.

The embassy also sought to claim the company as Chinese, the staffers said, despite TikToks public efforts to distance itself from the origin of its founders. TikTok, unlike ByteDance, is based in Singapore and the United States. In one of the meetings, the embassy argued that the legislation amounted to a forced data transfer of a Chinese company, according to the House staffer. In the other, the embassy argued that the effort was not fair to a Chinese company because the U.S. would not treat a company with a different national origin the same way, according to the Senate staffer."

Lawmakers now angry the meetings took place:
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle aired outrage Thursday after a POLITICO report that the Chinese embassy lobbied members of Congress on legislation that would force the sale of TikTok by its Beijing-based parent company. "These reports are no surprise. The Chinese Communist Party has a vested interest in keeping TikTok under its current ownership structure in the United States so it can influence and spy on Americans, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), outgoing chair of the House's select China panel, said in a statement to POLITICO. The more the CCP digs in to retain control of the platform, the more it demonstrates exactly why we must divest TikTok from the CCP.

"Ive warned time and time again that companies in China are beholden by law to the Chinese Communist Party. At this point, it comes as no surprise that Xi Jinping is heavily invested in preventing a TikTok divestiture, which would put American data and TikToks potential for malign influence out of the hands of the CCP," said Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), chair of the Intelligence Committee.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) responded to the POLITICO report with his analysis of why the Chinese government would launch the lobbying push: "Because it risks losing a powerful surveillance capability on unsuspecting Americans and a powerful tool for disinformation and propaganda to advance its interests."

--- I guess lawmakers don't know who their staff is meeting with because I assume they would have said no to any meeting with Tiktok even if not present.

GOP mainly wanted a trial for sound bites, so correct voting for a trial would give jackasses like Cruz more chances to outright lie.
