Spider-Man: No Way Home
Midsommar
Hereditary
Howls Moving Castle (though I should give this a second viewing to see if my opinion changes)

I dont actually hate either of the Ari Aster films, so much as I think theyre average movies that arent worthy of the praise they get on the street. The aggregate critic reviews I think are better representations of those films quality.

I actually prefer the slow burn Ari Aster films to any of the shock horror jump scare films that are constantly churned out.

Those kinda got worse as they went. I loved 2009. Then Into Darkness was kinda like... uh... And then Beyond was just moronic.
Beyond was the best of the three IMO, Into Darkness was really bad, and 2009 was fine. The third one felt like it was made by people who knew about Star Trek. 2009 and Into Darkness felt like they were written by people who only watched Wrath of Khan and were trying to remake it.

See. Sometimes no matter how well loved a film is there will be some people who dislike Shrek. Is that film to me. I will say the last time I watched it I didn't hate it. However I also never laughed once.

I will say Shrek 2 was much better.

I can level with you on that front. Agree 2 is one of the few sequels that outclasses the one before it, imo. Holding Out for a Hero was a phenomenal climax.

I can't really comment on that standard. I just know hardly a minute passed when I wasn't asking myself a question that never got answered, usually in incredulity.

Now, I haven't seen it since theaters so I might have a few details wrong, but:

How does the curved dish fall flat on the ground?
Why didn't the nanobots or whatever attack Krall?
How does the chain reaction thing not prove Krall right?

I actually forgot most of them because I forgot most of the movie but I had like a dozen, lol.

It was remarkably well made. The director did a great job; the actors did great jobs... I just couldn't figure out what the point of the story was. Like, who took this guy's biography and said "yeah, this is compelling and should be a movie."
That's how I feel about most of Scorcese's movies. It's like he hears about some cool criminal story and gets inspired to make the same movie for the seventh time.

masterpug53 posted...
While I don't agree with RotS being the 'least bad' of the prequels, it's at least an opinion I can respect. But no, there's a disturbing number of people out there now who believe it to be a genuinely good movie; presumably people who grew up with it and / or spent years absorbing the memes and erroneously believed themselves to be immune from diminishing irony.

There's always been a bit of it but the uptick in recent years is just some spiteful contrarianism to the sequels. People started pretending like they always liked the prequels just so they can keep complaining about the sequels.

Theres so much absolute trash coming out for mainstream horror, that Ari Asters being mediocre films looks amazing by comparison. While I dont think highly of either of Asters two feature-length horror films, theyre art in comparison to true slop like The Nun and Smile. Hereditary and Midsommar struck a goldmine with thematic shock value, though neither film makes interesting use of its theme. Hereditary was solely carried by Toni Collettes performance aside from the decapitation scene, and Midsommar appeals to every person with a shitty ex like a Taylor Swift song. Ill say Midsommar at least had good set and costume design. I actually think Midsommars ending was good, but the ending doesnt absolve the slog of the rest of the film.
Speaking of which, fuck Audition too.

I actually like slow horror films, like The VVitch and Cam.

Aliens

Which is kinda ironic considering the combination of sci-fi/horror/action is a guilty pleasure of mine.
I think it's mostly Newt that ruins it for me. I hate little children in survival horror. I get that they are to be protected, but their helplessness always results in all the cool and useful characters getting killed. The fact that Newt screams all the time makes it even worse.

Black Panther. I really dont see whats so mind-bogglingly amazing about it. I dont think its a bad movie, and maybe it was ruined for me because I wasnt able to see it until a week after release and all I saw was people going absolutely nuts over it, but I was so incredibly underwhelmed by it. I personally think its bottom tier MCU.

But I also love what a lot of people hate, so wtf do I know

I think it's one the worst MCU movies. BP is a boring character, most of the other characters are boring, the story isn't very interesting, the world building is nonsense, the action is mostly bad, and the cgi is bad.

Oh nah. I love music and games. Only thing I actually watch is sports.

I just can't get invested in TV or movies because at the end of the day, i'm watching a bunch of shit happen on a screen. With games, it feels different since the story can't progress without your input.

It is, but it's genuinely how I feel. Maybe because I was raised in a household that also never watched anything so I can't appreciate it. I also have a bad habit where, in the few times I do watch something and my favorite character dies, I stop watching. People tried to get me into GoT and since from what I understand, just about everyone dies at some point, the moment my fav dies, the show is over. It's just not worth getting invested in for me.
