It's a shame there's no such thing as putting smaller signs below the big one that says history.

Right, so each Dewey Decimal classification could be a sign. But the list of signs is about 4000 pages long ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/1556532717 ) . Maybe it would be more compact to just use a short number that we could fit on the spine of each book? Then you could simply look up the number by the subject you are interested in (in some sort of catalog of cards?).

There is also the fact that all of those ethnostates combined can't win a fight against the US and the rest of Israel's western enablers. Like zero chance. Direct intervention only leads to their own destruction.

That's a really good point. For so long, the (mostly racist) explanation was that Arabs suck at war. But since Ukraine, we now know that it was actually Russian weapons that sucked.

You talk about them as if no one knows who they are. It's irrelevant to your original point where you claim that the countries don't care about the Palestinians. Hell, that point itself is irrelevant in the face of israel committing genocide. Seems like you're just trying to find an excuse for it.

It is extremely relevant, because it explains why Israel, surrounded by Arab countries, can get away with brutalizing the Palestinians for decades. The Arabs kept Palestinians in refugee camps as a bargaining chip, got the UN to literally change the definition of refugee to support their efforts, lost a few wars, and then decided maybe it would be better if everybody (except Palestinians) made money instead. That's not excusing for Israel; that's an explanation for why the larger ethnostates in the region allow it to happen. They simply don't care.

Well, there's Iran, but half the reason the Oct 7 attack happened is likely Iran getting really uncomfortable with the entire rest of the middle east getting on friendly terms with Israel in the first place. On the surface this is somewhat about Islam vs Judaism, but behind the scenes there's also a serious Shia/Sunni divide at work.

Iran (and Yemen and Syria) don't so much support the Palestinians as much as they really hate Israel. If they could sacrifice the Palestinians to destroy Israel, they would not hesitate. In fact, maybe that's why they like Hamas so much...

and honestly even if they kick out or kill every Palestinian it would just radicalize every sympathetic country in the region and world wide, Just like with the U.S and its "war on terror" you can't just kill your way out of this

A big part of the problem is that there are exactly zero "sympathetic countries in the region". The story of the Palestinians is the story of being abandoned by the other Arab tribes/countries/sub-ethnicities/etc.

I mean. The last name is also the "real name", a family name. It seems more intrusive to me
You are thinking of the modern implications of knowing somebody's full name. The tradition in question is much older, from when everybody knew everybody anyway, at least by reputation, and using a family name was a way to be more indirect or general, creating the perception of distance. Especially if we think about back when surnames were mostly either careers or lineage descriptors.

Title plus last name is more polite because it is more indirect. You are not presuming that you are close enough to use their "real" name.

Meanwhile, my wife hates casually using just last name (no title) for close friends. She thinks it sounds prep school, especially for women.

I always had to do at least one sport until I was old enough to be on at least one school team. Once I got really into computers, I had to do outdoor day camps to "stay balanced". In upper school I had to either work or do something academic outside of school. Even though I would have preferred to sit around, all of the above were for the best, and I plan to do similar for my kid.

Edit: I was also forced to take an instrument of my choice, but I sucked so bad at it they they finally let me quit.

It's as if you never made that money.
  1. Assume your monthly paycheck withholdings are exactly right, and therefore you would normally owe nothing and get no refund at tax time.
  2. If you donated $5,000, then from the government's point of view, you have paid taxes on 5k that you effectively never made (and they don't know that).
  3. So now you will get a refund on the taxes that you would have paid on that $5k.
  4. You will not get a $5k refund. You get a much smaller fraction back. The exact amount depends on how much income taxes you would have normally paid on that $5k.
The intent is to not penalize people for donating, not to save them money.
