No man should ever have that personality, but being a woman I don't particularly have an issue with Samus being that way. People get upset with it because we're in the infancy of the equality movement. As a culture we've accepted that females are equal to males, but we've yet to accept that equality is not the same thing as being identical. You are predisposed to behaving a certain way based on your gender, but the world wasn't ready for a truly feminine action hero and everyone expected Samus to be more manlike.
I'm also fascinated by otherworldly creatures so that was a draw to that game for me, things like deep ocean life and prehistoric creatures interest me and Metroid's aliens are very reminiscent of them. Our own planet is a lot stranger than we think.
