I've been seeing a lot of Nintendo hate here as of late and I really have to wonder where it's coming from. A lot of people saying the Wii is bad but this system has had two of the best Mario games, a good Zelda game, a good Metroid game, an actual Donkey Kong Country instead of some dumb rhythm game crap, Brawl, games like Metroid Prime and Pikmin updated with better controls, and many unheralded gems like MadWorld. Really? What gives? The sales numbers don't lie, Nintendo -destroyed- this generation, and this isn't even mentioning handhelds where they remain the uncontested king. Is hating on Nintendo because they're popular just some cool hipster thing or something?

He is the worst offender but he isn't alone. I don't understand where the hate comes from, can you imagine how stagnant the game industry would be without Nintendo? Look at all of their innovations that Microsoft and Sony have copied, does anyone think they actually have the creativity and insight to keep things moving forward? The only improvements they know how to make on their own are in terms of fidelity, system horsepower, they don't understand the actual mechanics of games at all.

This is why it's so important that Nintendo makes so many good first party games, they use that experience and knowledge in building their systems. Sony and Microsoft only have a few notable first party games and I doubt those people even have any input in creating a new system. Anyone think Fumito Ueda is overseeing the development of the PS4 like Miyamoto does? Yeah, probably not. Anyone remember how we got the first Xbox controller that was big and heavy enough to double as a lethal weapon? Focus groups. The PC gaming crowd has a good claim to the top, Valve's Steam has been brilliant and has rejuvinated a gaming platform that I once considered dead- but it's indisputable that Nintendo is the best console producer.

Even if you hate Nintendo you kind of have to give them the NES era by default.

If it were as indisputable as you claim, it would not be disputed. I don't really wanna play devil's advocate or anything, but when your argument boils down to 'I'm right because I am right' you don't really have a strong argument.

You did post some things, and they were very nice things. But you went on to suggest that any other opinion on the matter was inherently wrong, asserting that your view was the only one that could have merit. Again, if the matter were indisputable, there would not be dispute.

I don't have a PSP but I can see that, I can't imagine -gaming- more on it than my DS though. But this is what Sony has done for the industry, introducing the game console as a multimedia device. I don't think this makes it a better game console per se, but it is something Nintendo could learn from. Unfortunately the Wii U is going to use a proprietary disc rather than something standard like Blu-Ray, but I'm still pretty excited for it.

Besides, I don't really see a lot of nintendo hate around here aside from a few posts here and there. Certainly not more than I see hate for other things. As long as nintendo makes a pokemon game every couple years people will love nintendo and wish for nintendo to have their babies.

Nintendo is far from the best company in the industry. Have they done the most for it? Sure. I'm not going to argue that. But that doesn't make them the best.

You are right. Sales numbers don't lie. It's why Nintendo has caused a shift to a focus on motion control. A technology that is still imperfect. It's a fun gimmick for some games, but for some games it just doesn't fit. Some of us would prefer a controller to something we're supposed to waggle.

There's always the classic controller. But on Nintendo Consoles, Nintendo always makes the best games for it. And many of their games aren't compatible with the controller.

Zelda: Twilight Princess - does not use the classic controller or the GCN controller. If you want it, you have to go the Gamecube route.

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 - Again, not an option.

Metroid: Other M - No classic controller here either

Donkey Kong Country Returns - Again. Not an option.

Kirby's Epic Yarn - Oh look. Nope.

Many non-casual gamers don't like the shift towards motion controls. And it's spreading fast.

The Wii Remote/Chuk is great without motion controls as well though. You could entirely remove its motion controls and it would be a very good controller, its modularity is actually very novel in of itself and it's unfortunate that the Wii U is going back to a monolithic controller that doesn't allow your hands to move independently of each other.

I'm sympathetic to your position, TC, but your opening argument isn't doing you any favors:

a good Zelda game, a good Metroid game,

Most fans consider TP a big disappointment- there's a reason why it's the lowest-rated console Zelda title since Zelda II- and I'm not even going to touch an Other M argument with a twelve foot pole. Suffice to say that as "controversial" as M:OM was, it was developed by a out-of-house studio. Speaking of which...

an actual Donkey Kong Country... Brawl,

These were done by second-party developers.

Metroid Prime and Pikmin updated with better controls,

I liked the MP updates, but most people would see this as epitomizing what's *wrong* with Nintendo as of late: instead of coming up with new titles, just cash in on older games!

As for your handheld argument, the 3DS is looking to become an unmitigated disaster.

I'd say that Nintendo itself is better as a developer now than it has been at any point since the SNES, but then again as someone who prefers Twilight Princess to both N64 Zeldas and prefers Super Mario Galaxy to anything Zelda, maybe I shouldn't be talking.

TP was generally well received. It is a bit of a let down after playing Wind Waker, but it's not like the game bombed or anything, people just don't like it as much as OoT or WW.

Who said anything about Other M? I do like that game but there was another Metroid game this generation.

You realize that you just described the ENTIRETY of the Wii's library in a single sentence
Every single game worth playing on the Wii contained within a single sentence

Why would anyone ever dislike the Wii, I wonder...

I honestly found Other M to be a rather refreshing experience, although I was living off of Mario, Metroid, and Sonic games in the months leading up to its release so yeah. Plus the fact that I was able to create a hype train for Other M based almost solely on my childhood love for animals may have raised the game's quality for me a bit. It probably didn't help that I got an army of wildlife documentaries with the game.

Surprisingly enough, I've been watching through the Discovery Kids teen drama series Flight 29 Down on YouTube and I've found quite a few similarities between that and Other M's characterization.

Am I the only one who thinks Samus could be a male and still have the same personality?

No man should ever have that personality, but being a woman I don't particularly have an issue with Samus being that way. People get upset with it because we're in the infancy of the equality movement. As a culture we've accepted that females are equal to males, but we've yet to accept that equality is not the same thing as being identical. You are predisposed to behaving a certain way based on your gender, but the world wasn't ready for a truly feminine action hero and everyone expected Samus to be more manlike.

I'm also fascinated by otherworldly creatures so that was a draw to that game for me, things like deep ocean life and prehistoric creatures interest me and Metroid's aliens are very reminiscent of them. Our own planet is a lot stranger than we think.

I don't really see any benefits to your hands being able to move independently of one another.

And then you have the sideways wiimote, which is one of the worst possible choices for controls. I mean there are 3rd party things that help matters. But when sideways wiimote is the only way to control a game... it makes you wonder why they wouldn't make the classic controller compatible as well.
